Ah well, more pain and suffering for me. As I said though, I doubt the general public will compare him to Tatsuki. Most of them forgot about that program or didn't like it.

Well I just LOVED the Tatsuki version - especially the super dramatic ending. It seemed like he felt every beat of the music. And I think it was the Canadian broadcasters who said (during his Skate America performance) that his jumps were so beautiful that it was like he was giving a jump clinic! They (jokingly) said he almost hit the ceiling with his 4T and on the 3A he looked like he was shot out of a cannon.

Someone made a sample of "Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra" with his "Violin Sonata No.9" skate already.
It's quite touching. For me, the music reminds me of Machida more than Mao because I wasn't following figure skating back when Mao skated to it.

Well, I'm assuming the risk to say that Tatsuki's "Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra" was better choreographed than Mao's. But people mostly remember Mao's because, well, she's Mao. Her grace and talent comes through regardless of choreo and she also won her first Worlds with that SP.

Tatsuki's was by (genius) Mills, right? Maybe the most important thing for you is that it brings you joy, rather than whose is better, which usually brings frustration. Mao is a goddess, and nothing will change that. I am in awe of her...And since this is Shoma's thread, I'm sure there will be people who will say someone else besides Coach Higuchi could give him better choreography. We'll see though. Sounds like he's very enthused.

Yes, it was choreographed by Phillip Mills. The program doesn't necessarily bring me joy though, first because the theme of the program was "tragic love" and secondly because I can't really watch it without remembering the teary-eyed performance at Nationals and the moment his fans, including myself, realized that he was ending his career.

This is mostly the reason why I wish Shoma waited for a bit more than a couple of seasons to bring this music back but this is only my opinion and I respect everyone else's enthusiasm. I think coach Higuchi can give him a good choreography.

Understood. He leaves behind a great body of work which should bring you joy eventually. Thank goodness we have You Tube. Retirements are sad. I found myself getting all misty eyed when I saw Kozuka's farewell.:palmf:

After seeing his interview with Dai more than once, it made me think Shoma is so much more relaxed than he used to be - remember his interview with Kenji? That was the one where I was afraid he might faint! I think he really is just super shy. Or maybe I just see it differently because I don't understand them (I was pretty lost once they got beyond "hai" and "sugoi") But the best thing of all is Shoma taking off one day a week! Thank you Uncle Dai!

The video you watched is this? Kenji’s room (one of the series of talk)
I have no other words than “he’s super shy”!
He did rarely talk with others since he was a child. Further, he cried every day for frustration that he couldn’t do well and fear of his mother.
Kenji several times points out that his voice is so thin!
But Kenji says that he felt something sexy in his performance since he was a child. Kenji’s impression about shoma really seems to be a hardworker. It’s nice he learns to take a day off now!:)
This talk was aired in last June before the season. Now he comes to speak firmly compare with that time. What happened to him during a half year or so?:hap57:

Yeah he did. His Japanese Nationals performance was the best, better than Skate America.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgL3uRwKKM4

I felt a rump in my throat to see it(and then that SP at Worlds 2014..) :sad21: It's hearbreadking for me to see their hug with Onishi, Mills..

.

Yes, that was the video. There is a Part 1 and a Part 2. He is SO different now in his interviews. I think maybe he is just growing up, and he is interviewed so frequently so he is probably used to it. Maybe he realizes too that people really are interested in what he has to say regarding his skating. This still makes me laugh though, because he is just so shy! To be fair, he also sounds like he has a lot of congestion and maybe has a cold. Maybe that's why I was afraid he might faint. Plus Kenji seems like he is teasing him a lot...I heard that said before that he feared his mother. That seems really strange. I really don't know what to think of that.

Oh, his pale face at that time may have been because of not only his tension but his health condition…
Provably, the strictness of his mother is for education. Small children tend to hate their practices when they try to master something, like piano, dance, etc. Parents often may be strict with such attitudes of their children.
Further, his mind must have changed as he succeeded during the season. Now he’s 5th in ranking! The number of interviews has increased and he’s learned to deal with them.
I think he's shy inherently and it wont change so much even after he gets used to interviews. At the same time, I’m always wondering why he’s so eloquent on the ice. He attracts audience’s eyes, and express what he feels at the moment freely. To see him like that is joy for me. :)

I was checking around YouTube and Dailymotion for videos to replace dead links for the OP in this thread and found this video that I don't think I've seen before.
MOI 2010 Shoma Uno / Satoko Miyahara
Baby Shoma and baby Satoko must have been invited because they were the national novice champions in 2010. Too cute!
This must have been before his "teenage awkward years" because he's smiling throughout the skate

Fun sample! Love the violins. I know he'll do great with that. And to think he is a junior in that video clip. Wow!...I speak Spanish and I know I'll have a hard time remembering the LP titles! Shoma may need to "brush up" on his Spanish!

Shoma is always so well prepared that he'll probably write them down on a piece of paper and read off them when he is asked like he did when he had to introduce Satoko in English

I like Mao's version too but Machida's is still fresh in my memory. I wasn't enthusiastic about Shoma using it when I first heard the rumor (was hoping it was just a rumor), but I feel better about it and kind of look forward to it after seeing what the twitter user had done.

And there is nothing wrong with being shy, right? He completely comes to life when he skates, and yes he is so eloquent (or do we mean elegant?)! One of our American TV commentators (and mostly they are always VERY annoying!!!) said she feels that no matter how he skates, he makes you FEEL something. I agree. I hope he has a long career ahead of him! Hopefully Uncle Dai (and his mom!) will force him to rest a little so he doesn't hurt himself.

Thx for posting that! That is one I had never seen either. What a great video! Shoma is like he can't stop smiling, even after he falls on one of his jumps! Even then, he had a lot of "pizzazz" and showmanship. Very charming! I love the part where he takes his jacket off - too funny! And he was doing the cantilever then too. Love the part with Satoko. His teenage awkward years are actually very endearing. :) The rest of us should be very happy that we didn't have to endure cameras and microphones in our faces constantly when we were growing up! :drama:

Oh, yes eloquent as well as elegant. He has something refined since he was a child. Further, I find the comment is so lovely compliment. Skaters as performers must be delighted when they can touch audience hearts by their performances with their full bodies and souls.:)
I’d love to see as many performances as he can from now, and want him to challenge himself with other choreographers! :agree2: Dai left many great works with some choreographers during his long career.

Oh, we must start count down before we can see his new program, new costume. FaOI is held on June 3-5! :hap93:

I love this program! A program with a jacket, this must be the program where Kenji says on the talk show that he felt something manly (I want to help Japanese members with the suitable translation of “色気”. I feel like this word has broader meaning than something sexual.).
He’s born to be a showman and love to amuse audience!
(I’m a talkative type, but I can’t imagine me standing alone on the ice attracting audience eyes and my face is enlarged on screen!:drama:)

Shoma is always so well prepared that he'll probably write them down on a piece of paper and read off them when he is asked like he did when he had to introduce Satoko in English
Sorry. I dont know well about this topic. :drama: Shoma has any problem with his memory?

Hamaguri, June 3 will be a very important date - first FaOI performance, and Skate America tickets will be on sale.

In the Kenji interview, Kenji's comment using the word "sexy" was so funny. The look on Shoma's face was great. I'm sure he was thinking "huh??!!"

Mikaboo is referring to the Skate America Exhibition where they made Shoma introduce Satoko (in English) saying "My friend from Japan, Satoko Miyahara." They wrote it on paper (probably phonetically) for him so it would be easy to pronounce. He isn't too good at keeping his true feelings from showing. If he doesn't like speaking in Japanese, he REALLY didn't like speaking English...Also at the Skate America men's press conference (and Eric Bompard in France), he read from a sheet of paper "I will speak in Japanese", and everyone laughed. Then his agent (?) did translations for him. I know these things were on You Tube, but I couldn't find them. Maybe they have been removed.

Your thought is the same as mine. I can't imagine performing in an enormous rink like Boston's TD Garden all by myself. One person looks pretty tiny in that huge rink!

I find the starting day of ticket sale of SA is a bit early? NHK cup is too late. It will be on around September…
I wish you can get a nice sheet!:hap10:

FaOI Sapporo broadcast is on June 5 as 1.5 hour program. Shoma’s full performance will surely be aired (Of course, we can catch news clip before the broadcast and see his costume and a part of his performance)! I assume he’ll show new SP like last year.

The metaphor, cannon ball has been in my mind since I read your comment, and the word just fits for this performance of MOI. If you saw a tiny tiny boy appeared on the ice, and then he started skating vigorously with such a speed, you must have been astonished and felt “Wow!” with an excitement.

It’s a pity those funny videos were removed! He’d troubled so much with his speaking this year. Yes, he mustn’t be good at speaking English. The gala of Boston! He had the paper when he introduced Satoko in a short sentence. Of course he must get used to it from now as we can see his progress in Japanese interviews. It was nice he was forced to speak in English before the audience at Boston!
eta: it was not Boston!

You did a good search Mrs. Piggy. Those are the videos. I love where he is introducing Satoko. His face is saying "I want to be anywhere else but here!"

Yes, the sale of Skate America tickets is rather early, since it doesn't take place until October 21-23. Also at that time (June 3), we don't even know who the skaters will be (not until June 29 or 30). I will still go, no matter who is skating but of course really am hoping my favorite skaters will be there...His introduction of Satoko was in Milwaukee. For Boston, when he placed 7th, he wasn't invited to the gala - poor Shoma! :rolleye::drama::shocked:

I often wonder at what point did Coach Yamada know that she had someone very special in Shoma. I'm sure she sees a lot of talented kids, but there are so many factors that come into the picture. With her experience, maybe she knew right away.

Can't wait to hear some news on FaOI - especially about the new program and the costume. Since the violin concerto is from the movie Ladies in Lavender, I am just praying his deep V isn't lavender color! It's too "girl-y". Mao, Akiko, and the US's Karen Chen all wore lavender when they skated to that music. Maybe your idea of purple will be better!

I just noticed in the last video Mrs. Piggy posted, in the opening photo it looks like Shoma is in Hawaii. The blue road sign in the left of the photo shows H-1 which is one of Hawaii's roads, and I can see the word Hawaii is on the sign. I hope Shoma was lucky enough to go to Hawaii!:hap93:
