I thought he looked so confident before his skate... His quad Flip wasn't the best as well. I hope he'll have a great comeback and make the podium

Not a great skate today, he looked really nervous and off before he even started. But, all season I've thought his long program is his strength, so I look forward to that. He should do much better with it.

Shoma said he was only able to sleep for an hour the night before due to jet lag. He will try to sleep more tonight. Good luck!

Hope he can sleep a little more. Too bad he couldn't arrive early. I was hoping they had a plan similar to Skate America, but I guess not! And it was different for SA, since he knew of a rink where he could practice before the competition...Too bad he can't take sleep medication! :shock2: Hope he's feeling better by Saturday! My main concern was that he didn't roll his ankle. I had visions of Sota in my head when it seemed that possibly he had hurt himself.

So happy to get some good news - the news I've been hoping for! I was listening to the BESP guys (Chris and Simon?), and they confirmed that Shoma is coming to Glacier Ice Arena in Chicago again at the end of December. I had heard he was coming in December but thought it would be before the GPF. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRiTyLy7zPU&t=4m28s :dance2: :party2: :hap57:

C.: I know he has injuries...He's a great kid.
S.: He has been skating at your rink in Chicago hasn't he?
C.: Yes and he's coming again in the end of Dec. to work with Alex Ouriashev. It's always a joy to have him there. He's a super person.

It was very fun to hear their comments about Shoma at the end of his program. They had a lot of praise for him in spite of his fall. They discussed how costly of an error it was for him to miss the jump combination, which we already saw in his score. Great 3A though! Glad he's still trying to smile, although he does have a hard time hiding his disappointment! :console: It's ok to let us know you're disappointed!

Skating order for Saturday's FS: 1) Shoma 2) Adam 3) Nathan 4) Yuzu 5) Javi 6) Patrick. Well, first can be good and bad. I don't know! Whatever happens, happens! Rest well Shoma! :scard7:

Good morning, all! Has there been any definite word that Shoma's ankle is all right? Nothing comes up on Google and of course it's 11am now in Marseille, so I'm assuming all is well, but it would be great to know for sure.

That downgraded 4T and lost combination really hurt his score  ahh the risk of attempting difficult, exciting technical material is real~
but he sold the program like a true artist! if it was the 6.0 system I would give 6 for artistry score :luv17:

Oh no, Shoma-kun! :sad46: Hope he's not seriously injured, but judging by Higuchi-sensei's reaction it probably wasn't too bad. (Maybe a cramp?)

Looking at the way he accepted his results, it also seems like Shoma has toughened up mentally. I can imagine Higuchi's unwavering love and support are a big part of the reason why he's able to deal with a "setback" like this much better now than back in Boston. He's probably realized that it's not the end of the world. And he can still come back strong in the FS tomorrow! Ganba!

Still impressed how he was able to perform with only one hour of sleep at all. I probably would've fainted in the first few seconds of the program from the awful combination of sleep deprivation and nerves!

Yeah, GPS will be a wonderful competition. I wanna go, but I gave up since it takes me one day more from my town to Marseille and I don’t have enough confidence of travelling alone under no guarantee of safety. Instead, im going to an show “KINGS ON ICE” in Romania during that weekend with my GS friend.

Have fun at "Kings on Ice"! Would love to hear your report afterwards, if you feel like sharing your experience. :)

Gee I had not heard about an ankle problem. I thought it was a muscle cramp. I hope he is ok.

Great effort from Shoma to skate so well and keep the flow of the program after that awful splat. His 3A was gorgeous!

He is sitting in 4th with Nathan and Adam right behind him. Unless there are some major meltdowns (and not wishing that)
I believe the top three now will be on the podium. I just don't know in what order. Ice is slippery and you never know.

GO Shoma! :yahoo::cheer:

Was bummed that he made a mistake and I know he himself is not happy with it, but it's still a beautiful program! Even if he is just shy of the podium I hope he has a good skate tomorrow.

I watched the video several times, and it really did appear to me that he bent his ankle back. Could have been the angle of the camera though. Seems like he's ok, and I am very happy to be wrong about the ankle. I do love the way he never gives up. I think when he realized the seriousness of what he'd done, he fought extra hard and delivered a great 3A and beautiful ending spin...Well, last year he was 4th in the short and ended up 3rd after the skate of a lifetime, and he is strong in the FS. I know he'll come out and give 120%...For a minute there it looked like he had tears forming in his eyes, but it seemed he was able to calm himself down. After all, he's used to sitting in the Kiss and Cry and hearing lots and lots of applause. :)

Some info in nikkansports.com says he wasn't able to sleep well because he was waking up every hour and then woke up at 6 am. He tried to take a nap since the competition wasn't until 9 pm but couldn't. I love that it says he "takes full responsibility for not being properly conditioned and will make sure to sleep well as he looks towards the free skate on Saturday." Wish I could lend him some of my sleep med which gives me 7 deep hours of sleep! :cool14:

Hamaguri have a great time at Kings on Ice. Can't wait to hear about it!

Ugh, that happened to me before a dance performance once and I had to be on stage at 10 am (and then again at 7 pm, of course without being able to nap inbetween due to nerves). It was terrible! The coffee to help me be at least half awake made it even worse - never had I been so shaky in my life! Next time you gotta send me some of your sleep med. I'll buy you some Shoma/skating merchandise in return.

Nothing worse than having to be ON after you've had a bad sleep. I went for months on 5 hours sleep a night and finally said I can't do this anymore! It's all pretty tricky stuff tho and most reputable doctors are reluctant to prescribe sleep meds (many of which are controlled substances). I had forgotten how much fun it is to sleep! Staying up through the night to watch CoC and NHK and getting up in the middle of the night to watch Rostelecom got me all jet lagged too! :drama:

The question is what are they allowed to take to avoid any doping issues.

Good question. I wonder how others cope with this, or is Shoma just a person who needs a lot of sleep. Cos you figure most of the others are in the same situation. I know in another thead someone remarked on how tired Javi and Yuzu looked and people just looked tired in general. The Grand Prix is pretty grueling though between the skating and the travel.
