Holy guacamole -- that 3A! :jaw: Just watched the program again and can't get over how he just went thundering into that 3A. And the ice coverage -- wow! Beautiful! I honestly was so nervous watching it live that I didn't even realize he jumped it from an inside edge spread eagle as opposed to an outside like he usually does. Whew - heartfelt performance, emotion, and even a little smile while he was skating.

And besides the actual skate, I just LOVE the B ESP boys' comments on him. “He spent a good deal of time in Chicago at Chris Howarth’s rink. Chris was sending me glowing reports not only on the way he worked, but the way he is with the kids -- he’s just an A-1 guy.” This little dude is really something special, both on and off the ice. :points:

Shoma did a great job. His happiness at doing well was so nice to see. Deserved 100 points.

Great job Shoma! I think it should have been closer between him and Nathan. I thought Nathan's GOE score on his 4F and PCS scores were a tad high.

I hope Shoma just focuses on being clean and doing a great performance in the LP.

So, odds that he'll keep his FS costume and not change into the dead chicken? They got higher now that he still skated with the old Lavender outfit for his SP. I'm hopeful.

We can only hope! That FS costume is a work of art. I'm sure that's what we'll see. It seems those other costumes are just his ice show costumes.

just watched and teared for our Shoma...

He's a true warrior, not giving up on anything. He seemed so focused, determined not to let himself down, his team and his fans. He fought for those quads and combo like loco he is. And that 3A - a cherry on the top, that coverage, entrance and finishing were out of this world! There was so much to appreciate in that performance - most of all he really stepped up in terms of interpretation, connecting with the music and modling choreography to his movement. Then, I loved musicality in spins - this last one was so insanely perfect with tempos of the music it left me shocked. Step sequence was so fluid, continous, expressive...

It really seemed like he's coming alive on ice, performing, competing, his shyness disappears a bit, but that mysterious aura around him still stays.

And Mihoko's reactions were the best - she is always more excited and agitated than Shoma himself!

In the Grand Prix Final press conference, Shoma was asked what he has done over the last year to show so much improvement in the areas of style, bodyline, and theatricality. I thought that improvement was really shown in today's SP. His response at that press conference was that he has images in his mind of what he would like to accomplish, and he practices the movements in front of a mirror. Also he said he has a lot of emotions inside and he tries to express them with his movement.

But to me, he still looks like a 12 year old when you see him up close https://pic.twitter.com/hf6FiWbJZB but when he steps on the ice, he just transforms! And of course Kurt Browning calls him a bit of a magician! He is pretty amazing!

Congratulations Shoma, a member of 100+ Club :hap93:

Astonished by his huge 3A. So beautiful :luv17:

Shoma is trying 4Lz?? no way?!!

I think you meant 4Lo.

Shoma and Lutz are like cats and dogs.

I should have written "Even tried 4Lz".

I read Shoma had tried all jumps in free program by quad in his 2 weeks training in Chicago (and Toronto?). I thought that meant he had tried 4Lz as well. I have not heard that he could make it, by the way  I hope he has given up about Lutz by now (has he really? Fingers crossed). Stay healthy, Shoma.

Anyway, nobody dreamed of such training for him before, especially 4Lz  It surprised me so much even if it was a try.

That was my post #2739 from this thread. Then they put on his FS music, and for every jump (except the 3 jump combo) in the program, he did a quad. He did a great job, and the people who were there watching were all clapping.

I should clarify what I wrote. He did a quad toe for every jump. I didn't express my thought properly. Didn't mean to mislead anyone.

John Coughlin from NBC Sports Channel:

"Shoma went to Chicago to work with Alex Ouriashev so that he is able to pull out landings like this when he is a little overrotated. That’s probably part of the reason he was able to save that 4T+3T.

But to me what sets him apart is the way he speeds up tempo and then lingers in the slower parts of the step sequence. Or the unique cantilever move that sets him apart and jumps off the page, especially on the component side when the judges are deciding how to differentiate the skaters based on their pure skating skill and artistry. He has to be towards the top of the field when you make that decision."

NBC just aired the men's short this afternoon, so maybe you tubes will be coming soon. In the meantime, here are most of the remarks from Johnny and Tara. Both of them are pretty big fans of Shoma's!

Tara: What to look out for is his speed, deep knees, the height on his jumps. Watch the build up into his 4F -- so smooth, skating so fast. He doesn’t back away at all.

Johnny: Nice save on landing of that 4T 3T.

T: Wow – look at the speed coming out of his 3A.

J: Then into the cantilever. So many wonderful qualities to his skating. He has a huge advantage in the way he covers the ice -- the way he skates from his fingertips to his belly to his toes! He is just wonderful!

T: I love his style. He is so artistic...(Then they talk a little about scoring) Someone like Shoma has the artistry that is needed to hit high 9’s in composition scores and I’m sometimes confused why he doesn’t get them. From start to finish, he is in it. He feels the music – the speed with which he skates into the elements, the transitions. I love Shoma!

J: I love his skating. He wasn't clean enough to overtake Nathan, but it was a wonderful performance!

(Just now noticed a few new things he did this time in the SP, the most obvious being the 3A coming out of the spread eagle inside edge instead of outside, as someone else pointed out. He also had another move where he opened both his arms up, and at a certain point he was skating with his hand on his chest? on his heart? Interesting little details that weren't there before. I was so nervous watching it live in the middle of the night that I could hardly appreciate it. Ha, ha! Love that Tara mentions how she likes his transitions! :laugh2: )

No CBC television version yet. They did not show skating today... hoping for maybe next weekend. They are only live streaming sans commentary.

Congrats Shoma for your Bronze medal!

I know you have regrets about your performance, but you landed 4Lo with GOE +2.43

Have a good rest, and please do not push yourself too much in the next competition  (TBH, I want JSF to let him skip it.)
Your next (real) international stage will be the Worlds.

Ah, Shoma! After the first few passes I thought he had this and I was so excited for him... and then came the axels, darned things!! But, they were well timed axel errors, right on the music... gotta give him that, lol. And, a beautiful new 4L has come out to play. Fantastic job adding that jump. So while the program was not performed like he is capable of performing it, he did throw out some technical stuff that will surely give him confidence going in to World's. More building blocks in his repertoire. I am sure he will skate much better there, he is so capable of much more.

Isn't the next comp very soon? He sure is busy. Congrats on your Bronze Shoma. Just don't become the Bronze Guy now. I hope everyone focuses on Nathan vs.Yuzuru at Worlds and Shoma can sneak the Gold. Hehehe...

Congrats on the Bronze, Shoma, and on landing that 4Lo (with better GOE than Yuzu's  that's gotta make you happy!).
