Shoma's like an energizer bunny! Congrats on the successful debut!! I'm looking forward to the growth of his programs this season. :hap10::hap10::hap10: I starting out not liking Loco too much and ended up loving it so already he's off to an even better start. I feel like the season is here and I"m not ready for it!! :eeking:

Why is it bad to prefer LOCO over Turandot 2.0? We all have our preferences and it's okay if we like some programs better than others. *shrugs* I think that's normal and nothing to be ashamed of. Not every program has to resonate deep within me or make me feel....things. I still prefer his debut SP to Ladies in Lavender and that really grew on me by the end of last season, but I still prefer Legends.

You are right... we don't always love what our favourite skaters do....but I guess I wish I loved his long going into the Olympics because it is such a big season for everyone.

I honestly believe it's the Quads. Turandot 1.0 was so much easier so it is easier for Shoma to sell. Didn't he say that when he was getting exhausted he starts to smile? Well, he was smiling at the end of Turandot 2.0. This is huge. It is hard. And I think that's the reason why they decided on Turandot again, while changing it around to fit the Quads. Because it's not in question whether he can sell it and he can concentrate on jumping. He wants that Gold. It's the most logical strategy. I think after this season we will see a more versatile Shoma. For now I also prefer Winter and look forward how the programs progress during the season. It's another month until the GP and I'm positive we're going to see some changes. And better camerawork of course. I know some might disagree but my favourite performance of Loco was GPF and not Worlds. At Worlds he had 4 quads compared to three and I thought it showed already. But this is the case for every skater, not only Shoma. So many Quads just SHOW in the program. That's why the SP is easier to swallow, imho.

Good point -- mine, too. His final spin there was just a work of art. :eeking:
I do believe in Turandot 2.0. My feeling is that it has a much greater potential than Turandot 1.0, and partly because of the Quads (and because of Jose Carreras in the 2nd half as well!). This program, even at this stage, has already brought one audience to its feet (including yours truly), and that was the magic of the Quads (and the costume!).

Audience reaction plays such a big part and in that unfortunate stream you could hear nothing! I'm sure even in that smaller rink the fans went crazy. It's perhaps another reason why it felt more subdued to the viewers who weren't there.

Helloo, I’m back from Bergamo! It was very cold and wet, but very good and rewarding. I was finally able to watch Shoma skate very close (I was sitting at the balcony in Helsinki and only got to see SP practices and the gala from the nearby rows, which, of course, was wonderful, but NOT ENOUGH).

Gosh, he was smiley, especially on Saturday! And sleepy, I guess, as always. The first I saw him – through the glass windows of the training hall above the rink – he was YAWNING. Of course. (I’ll post a pic later, lol.) Oh, wait, I’m reading through the backlog and I saw iorii already posted my pic that I tweeted during the comp. https://twitter.com/asverit/status/908395695333416960 I’ll post the original once I get to the Men’s SP in my editing :D

He also always paces before he’s out onto the ice, goes back and forth through the whole length of the… eh, place where skaters and coaches stand. They often went out in the middle of the previous skater’s program, so Shoma was out there during Matteo’s Beatles FS, and he was kinda dancing to Help. :D It was adorable. Actually, whenever he’s standing, he can’t keep still. I saw him kinda droop and sleep in the cafeteria after interacting with a lot of fans (including me, well). He’s constantly doing this thing where he kinda bites the inside of his cheek? scrunches up his face? I noticed it a lot, when he was just standing there and when he was interacting with fans.

Okay, but onto the skating!

I have to say first, though, that from what I’ve seen, the videos are, well, terrible and really, really diminish the experience. That overlaid audio (it’s not the real audio from the arena, but the music was pasted over the actual video; at least they added the clapping, but not! for ladies’s SP for example, SMH), first of all, which as I’ve heard made Shoma off his timing in Winter, which he definitely wasn’t in real life (in fact, he was maybe the most well-timed I’ve ever seen him for this program). Then the camera shooting, kinda jerky and weird. Also we were screaming like crazy (and not just us, and not just during Shoma’s performance), so I’m specifically mad at them for making that sound so muted! (They got me filmed in Hiroaki’s FS, lol.)
So basically if you liked it know that it was probably 200% better irl. :D

From my experiences, Winter is a much more complete program at this point, though there’s still some choreo missing from places which I believe will be there later. But it already feels really great, there are a lot of powerful moments. It’s understandable, since he practiced and performed it in front of the audience much more, of course! He has such great energy though, and the ending pose is just beautiful. (And my friend-another-professional-musician who I was there with was completely struck by it, says she’ll take that performance with her to her grave. <3)
That moment is super powerful IRL, I might have screamed (the only thing I edited from men’s SP so far, haha): https://twitter.com/asverit/status/909177523195580416 And to think I'll see it right in front of me in Grenoble!!!

Turandot is half costume half quads at this point, haha. A lot of empty places there, which he mentioned himself, so I wasn’t too worried. But we were definitely screaming at that 4S, which, for me, came out of nowhere – I would’ve been less surprised at an attempted quad lutz! As he said in the interview, he mostly didn’t do any jumps in the morning practice, but then in the 6-minute warmup he did a gorgeous 4lo and at the very, very end, suddenly, there goes a quad sal. I really thought it was a random “look what I can do”/“I wonder if I can” – which it kinda was, but then he did it in the program. :D I’m very proud of him. And I can see the potential for it, for sure.

Both costumes are just amazing, but Turandot is just something else. It’s super sparkly and super, super beautiful.

I have a lot of photos, so far I’ve edited Men’s FS here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/asveri/albums/72157686821698954 (practices are gonna be their own album!)
And Men’s VC here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/asveri/albums/72157685283867222
Both consist pretty much of 70% Shoma. :D I’ll link more here later!

With a small arena, I ran into him several times, of course. First time was on Friday, when he was just standing there while Mihoko and his manager were talking with the Risport guy and looking at the boots. He looked busy so I just stood there and casually looked at him while I could. :D He feels so different off-the-ice. After that business was finished he actually (!) turned towards his fans, quite readily (there were just several standing there, like me, just watching… but actually waiting), but I didn’t manage to get my present to him or get a picture/say anything, it was over too quick.
I did end up getting a photo with him after the free, when he was just chilling in the cafeteria, and basically fans just started slowly crawling towards him the moment he seemed kinda not-busy. So I got in the line. Only managed to ask “can I take a picture with you?” in Japanese, but not anything else, the words just blubbered out of me (my heart was beating quite fast, I realised later). He’s very nice. I didn’t want to risk it and gave my present to him earlier in the KnC after his FS. Crossing fingers he likes the sweets, reads the card (there’s a bit in japanese!!) and maybe even wears the t-shirt.
(And I got a blurry picture with Mihoko, taken by Shoma’s manager!! She’s so nice and kinda giggly. #myidol. Amazing. Told her thank you for all the work she does with the skaters.)

Ah, feel free to ask anything, I probably forgot something for sure!

Thank you so much Verit for your detailed report. So happy for you that you had a great experience at the competition.

OMG your photos are absolutely beautiful!

Hello everyone. I am a lurker, but I am stepping out of the shadows to thank Verit for that long and detailed description. And wow those photos! You must have an amazing camera and excellent photography skills. I stopped trying to take photos at skating comps a long time ago, the skaters are just a blur. It is so amazing to see Shoma skate. I got to see Turandot 1.0 at Worlds and he got a standing ovation even with mistakes. Hes THAT good! I'm sure you had a great time.

Since there has been a lot of talk of Shoma's beautiful costumes, I decided to post my cell phone lock and home screens for Loco and Turandot in case someone here would like them.

I have a question! Why is Sensei Mihoko nicknamed Fluffy!? I've been wondering for quite some time.

Welcome nik183! You're "de-lurking" at a great time! Your Loco and Turandot Screens are beautiful! Thank you!

Here is why Mihoko is called Fluffy. This post is from last May.

Here is Coach Fluffy in her fluffy, pink coat -- named for us by MaiKatze. Well done, MaiKatze!

:jaw: Verit, thank you so much for your report. I felt like I was right there in the midst of the action with you. Your photos are jaw-dropping. Makes my fuzzy, blurry photos look pretty awful! He is really nice to his fans! So happy to hear that you are favorably impressed with both the programs and the amazing costumes.

Two questions for you -- When you spoke to Coach Fluffy, did you speak to her in English? I have heard that she speaks really good English and am just curious. Would you say the crowd was from many different countries or mostly Italian fans?

Thanks Arriba!

LMAO! That is one fabulous coat!

Isn't it awesome. And I've heard people say how on Tumblr people call her Fluffy. But that started here. Sometimes I almost forget her real name! :shame: How about those nails in the JPN Nats video? They're to die for!

Mihoko's nails are always so beautiful and intricate. I've wondered if she has input into Shoma's costumes. The "costumes" at the International Classic podium last weekend were so blah compared to Lombardia's podium (.. or mostly compared to Shoma :scard7: ).

For the IC podium - Nathan has said those are not his official costumes, Max has very minimalist costumes, and I think Liam's was appropriate for La La Land. And let's face it - who else has costumes like the Japanese men. :luv17: I'm still thinking of the other Japanese skater at Lombardia, Mr. Peacock. Shoma's costumes are pretty spectacular and elaborate in comparison to the North American men.

fyshomauno tumblr just shared a fancam of Winter by a user named goopho! Check it out!

And verit, great report and fantastic photos. What a weekend this must've been. I saw a post by someone on tumblr who also got a photo with Shoma, and she was saying "He's so soft!" For some reason I found that sweet. :luv17:

dear Verit - for everything you shared: the emotions, the report, beautiful photos! I bet this was an amazing experience, from photos I see that Shoma looked quite relaxed, smiling so often:), but well - when he skates a program, he means business, that's for sure! My biggest wish now probably is experiencing some FS event live, seeing what joy it carries.

a bit of off-thought, but seeing Deniss captured in 'stillness' on the photos really reminds me of his coach: those hands, high held head, so much elegance...It's just warms my heart:love:

Welcome nik183 to GS and to Shomazing's FF! Glad you decided to de-lurk and join in the fun! :)

Thank you for your screens, gorgeous!

Wow, I feel some relief now, after Verit's exhaustive and very well-documented account of the Lombardia trophy. I have very little, if anything, to add. Sho was looking great, very relaxed and calm, always smiling, at times a bit tired and sleepy (tried to sleep in the cafeteria once, but with no success), but overall he was just fine. It seemed he was not concerned about 'competing' with anyone, but rather more focused on himself, which is a good sign. I ran into him quite a few times as well, but I was mostly a close observer of him, not a fan queuing for the autograph or picture, I am afraid (sorry for disappointing you, but that's a long story, and I might well be overthinking all this stuff -- I do tend to refrain from transferring my emotions about what people are doing to the people themselves): he seems very polite and gentle, always moving his body and doing this little hand movements and head tilts, biting his lips, etc. I once witnessed his 'conversation' with Fluffy and two other persons whose names I did not know (the pic attached), and it was fun to watch him. He wasn't particularly interested in that conversation, or so it seemed. He was more interested in turning around and hiding his hands in the sleeves. It was always fun to observe him.

Now I know (well, we all knew it, I guess) who's the 'grey cardinal' (or rather 'pink fluffy cardinal') behind Sho's success: definitely, Fluffy. Her presence there was huge: she was organizing everything and everyone around her, knew exactly when to smile, with whom to speak, what's the schedule, where to go, etc etc. She's the commander there, and what a great woman, I must say! I am totally in love with her now. She's definitely the main power behind Sho's (Ice) throne. That's a good thing about this amazing team -- everyone's doing exactly what they are best at. Fluffy's organizing stuff, choreographing, smiling and cheering up when needed, Sho's delivering and skating. And then sleeping (he must be very good at it, too).
I am sorry I am unable to say more -- I've just finished writing a few lengthy posts about this competition (in Russian...), so I am little bit exhausted and overwhelmed now. And need to get back to work.
What is clear though is that I will never forget the day I saw Sho and his two programs. These latter were breathtaking (very literally, I was breathing heavily) and inspiring. As one commentator said about Sho's Lavender, 'I am fighting back tears a little bit'. Turandot will bring many to tears, if Sho delivers, that's for sure.

As a bonus: Sho's patiently waiting for the next fan. :slink: He doesn't seem too excited here, does he? :laugh2:
