I hope everyone is feeling better already. Before reading Shoma´s comments I also thought it was the pressure that was bothering him. Multiple quads, important competition, home crowd, the only man representing Japan. But from what he said after his LP I got the impression that he was just not physically totally ready and recovered. So he was not in his top condition out there and did not connect well with the ice. There were also some changes in his programs too. Maybe all this made him feel uncertain about his chances to go clean. The programs definitely are very demanding both mentally and physically and to land all the quads any skater needs to be in top shape in every aspect. At Lombardia he was ready and did clean programs there, so as he gets to practice more and stays healthy I believe he will be fine at Nationals and the Olys.

For me it was good to hear that at least a male skater still enjoys competing. I´ve been thinking that nobody does so these days because of the difficult layouts, falls and injuries. As I don´t have the mindset of an athlete at all I only feel sorry for the men doing the quads because they all have been struggling a lot during the season. I feel also gratitude for all the skaters for giving us a chance to see all the beauty that there is in FS is in the top level. As I was watching his performances I was after all admiring him and amazed by his presentation, deep edges, flow, spins and steps. So beautiful skating!!! I think he has improved especially in Turandot.

One day has passed and while watching the skating that happened today during ice resurfacing our channel repeated the men's competition and I...changed my mind. I think I understand now what Shoma meant when he said he was satisfied. I probably was too nervous or too influenced by the german commentary who just kept going on how the sport is done because of the quads and it's not the same without Javier and Yuzuru. And disappointed that Shoma didn't win. But watching it again, I felt strangely....calm about it. And it wasn't really that much of a disaster. There were so many beautiful elements. The triple axels....great, and Shoma felt and interpreted the music better than in France. And the short program had been 'short' of perfect. While I still don't think Shoma was robbed, I can understand those who say he should've won this. What he lost in the tech he is so much better in PCS than Nathan or Mikhail. He will learn from this and I do believe come back stronger at japanese Nationals. While my personal believe is that Nathan will win the Olympics still, I believe in Shoma to deliver when it counts. The Olympics will be redemption time for a lot of skaters, Shoma included. And let Nathan take the brunt of expectations as GPF champion and favourite, if that means that Shoma can skate in a more relaxed manner.

Good to hear that you are feeling better MaiKatze:ghug: Today my mind is also refreshed and I looked at this competition in a different way. And I have gone from dissatisfied and disappointed yesterday to "satisfied" too today. Shoma hit a new artistic height here with the improved music, interpretation and edge works. This Grand Prix series has been pretty tough for many so Im glad it finally comes to an end and every one can release the load in their head and freshen up for the second half of the season.

Hello everyone! Well another GPF is over, emotional roller coaster for sure. Figure skating fans are such a passionate group. Glad folks are feeling better after some rest,
myself included.

Looking forward to seeing Shomita in the Gala. Is the Gala today or tomorrow?

Tomorrow.

La Vie en Rose!!!

I know, I know. I'll be disappointed because he's probably skating to "See You Again" or "This Town", but I can hope anyway. And I really want him to do 4cc now.

Fluffy and Arutunian! They are like black and white. Ying and Yang! + and -! They cancel each other out, hahaha!

I don't want to sound like I'm searching for an excuse, it's just a thought of a possible explanation I have...Shoma missed the bus on the first day, isn't that right? Is that the bus that takes the skaters from the hotel to the rink? If so, perhaps Shoma stayed at the hotel. But if he didn't....I think the GPF being in his hometown might have been counterproductive in getting Shoma into the 'competition' mood. He has problems with jet lag but usually does very well overseas. There was no flight, no arrival at the venue, no hotel, no preperation beforehand. Perhaps his friends and family were all there. It was all familiar. If Shoma says his condition was very good, I do believe that, but often times athletes need routines for getting into the right mindset, and have their own little rituals. It might be that because he was at home that it just didn't happen, because his mind wasn't at the GPF, but still at home. What do you think?

It’s quite the double take isn’t it. They’re part of the same (exclusive) club with boys they knew since their voices were octaves higher, and hug them still as though they’re still that high!
(I am referring to the charming "parents" in the photo)

We can't know, us fans in a way. We're all outside pressing our faces to the window, unable to see into the inner rooms. Maybe it's the feel of the entire season, where all of "the six", with their extended teams, are wrestling with how much their bodies can take. The caution causing a sort of "parking brakes" for practice; for competing.
To your point, he will at least have to travel to another town next? I have a stressful 2 weeks, (like shoma I like to think!) but I am looking forward to JNationals.

Japanese Nationals are in Tokyo this year. With the fastest Shinkansen (Nozomi) it takes 1:40 hrs to get there. So it's highly probable that Shoma will stay in a hotel in Tokyo for Nationals.

Shoma has said before that he stays in hotels to be in competition mode. there were also videos on twitter of him arriving at the hotel back. even when he did shows this summer that were in Nagoya or close, he stayed in hotels to be in performance mode.

In other news Shoma was asked in that video with him and the bentos what he likes about his body, he said he was thankful that it was strong so he didn't really get serious injury and he was asked what he liked about his face and he said nothing. That he liked Daisuke and Javi's faces.
He also said he had a very similar character to his mother.

There could definitely be something to it, if he feels everything is too familiar. It could still throw off the competitive spirit, despite staying in hotels. Whatever the reason is, I hope it gets fixed.

That interview... I was like, "Really? You don't like anything about your face and like Daisuke's better?" I mean, nothing against Uncle Dai, but there is no question that Shoma is better-looking! Also ironic considering that it was Shoma's face that got him into figure skating, with Mao Asada finding him cute and inviting him to try the sport. Oh, Shomita. Stop disliking yourself so much! We and many other people like you very well!

Oh, just read the whole cultural thing about saying you don't like your face, but he also said in the interview that he doesn't like himself very much (which he's said before, so...

Finally had a chance to get caught up on reading and watching things. Missing out on lots of sleep and some personal turmoil really made me need a break.

Back again now and very happy that the Winter Prince was on the podium. Gold would have been better, but silver is a real honor too. I still say there were a lot of positives to take away from this, especially in terms of Winter. I thought his expression was wonderful, he moved great, Step Sequence and Spins were all Level 4. This may be the first time for a Level 4 on the Step Sequence? Since I am not a fan of five quad programs, I wasn’t as enamored of the free. I think once you get beyond 4 quads you run the risk of losing the integrity of any program. That being said, apart from the jumps, it is a lovely program, and I think he really feels this music. I would be beyond happy if the rules would change and quads would be limited to 3 in the free. I know, fat chance! And you can put whatever program content layout you want on a piece of paper, you still have to deliver it. Ryan Bradley on the Oly Channel talked about his beautiful edges and command of the ice (and of course mentioned his errors too).…His condition seemed better but still not 100%. Any length of time off the ice is not a good thing for them!

I also found myself thinking, “Wait, what happened to the big Nagoya / Toyota conspiracy that supposedly had everything totally rigged for Sho to win?” ! Sure! Just as I suspected – a bunch of hog wash started by the usuals. Maybe the judges didn’t get the memo about the fix! A few insignificant changes would have given him the gold, had they wanted him to have it.

Not sure if he should go to 4CC or not (Jan. 23-28), with JPN Nats Dec. 20-24. And somewhere in there he is supposed to be squeezing in jump training with Alex. Haven’t heard any specific news about the jump training yet. I hope he is in good enough condition to be training lots and lots of quads! That could be tricky too if Alex is taking skaters to Novice or Jr. U.S. Nationals, because our Nats start really early this year (at the end of Dec.) because of the Olympics. So who’s to say what the best use of his time is, given his condition. I’m sure he and Her Royal Fluffiness and Yamada will have a pow wow with his team to figure out the best plan.

Thank you for all the fun things that were posted in this thread. Once life gets back to normal, I have to go back and read everything and enjoy it again!

Wow Shoma just popped his 1st 3A and then stepped out on his 2nd 3A in his skate at the gala. He’s like barely rarely ever done this before. It must be home ice curse or something wrong with the timing of his jumps. I hope it’s the first one.

So cool! Trusova is great too. So fun that they tried that. Yet another potential collaboration, haha.

Shoma popping jumps in see you again. It's a sign. He needs to retire that EX, lol. Their relationship is turning sour.
