one example of "tennen" moments of Shoma:
(interview after Shoma got silver medal in Winter Olympic)
The interviewer asked "Medal ceremony will be held afterwards, how do you feel?"
Shoma: (????) Medal ceremony..later??
-> As a silver medalist Shoma was supposed to know the arrangement, but he seemed surprised and knew nothing

This type of thing may happen more frequently than we realize. At Boston Worlds there was a rather informal medal ceremony. I think maybe it was a small medal ceremony? Anyway, Boyang wasn't there because apparently he didn't know he was supposed to be.

It will be interesting free state tomorrow. I don't think Kolyada has been consistent with his Elvis program and I don't think Vincent has skating skills yet to match those at the top.

They used to have medal ceremony on rink right after the competition at the Olympics. I can't remember when they changed it, maybe at Sochi?

Can't remember exactly what this was. Might have just been an informal, fun thing for the fans. Whatever it was, it was in the lobby and people were wondering where Boyang was.

Yes, in Sochi they started this completely separate medal ceremony and then PC followed suit. But in the arena after the competition they do have venue ceremonies where they set up a podium and do pretty much everything like a medal ceremony except give them the actual medals, play the national anthems, and raise the the flags. They have to wait until night time for that at medals plaza. I wasn't in Sochi, but in PC I'll share my experience.

I had heard comments that the medal ceremony wasn't well attended, but for mens skating we were sardined in. In general I think maybe it would have been better attended if it wasn't so difficult to get to the medals plaza. You had to set aside HOURS to make this happen. From Gangneung Ice Arena you have to get out of the olympic park which takes time (especially if you kept getting stopped by press like we were), hope to find a cab or shuttle in time to get you to gangneung station, which can take 30-45 minutes. Then from there you have to take the train for 20 minutes to Jinbu station. Then from Jinbu station you have to wait for shuttles there to take you to medals plaza in PyeongChang (wait for shuttle is 20 minutes or more). And then there was a ton of traffic to sit in (about an hour in traffic). Then you still have to walk to the plaza itself from the shuttle stop and get through security (another good 20 minutes). We had daylight when we left but by the time we got there it was very dark. And then they were delayed getting the medallists out there (probably because they were stuck in traffic like we were). We had just enough time to see medallists through Yuzu, Shoma, and Javi, but then we had to haul ass back to the shuttles because we had to catch our late train back to Seoul. We didn't have much of a choice to stay for the rest anyway because it was a crazy stampede to get out. I just didn't want to fall down... And then we didn't have our pick for train times because Chinese New Year made it crazy difficult to book the most convenient times. I would have liked to have walked around and explored more of the area because they had some seemingly cool things to see there. But oh well.

So, long story not so short, it was a complete, absolute, and utter PITA and it was freezing, but I was so happy so it was worth it. It was like celebrating twice and seeing the Olympic flame was also really cool. If I wasn't in a good mood though I would have been really grumpy .

Oh the dreading 4lo :hopelessness: is his 4S not solid yet? Maybe he should just go 3 quads.

He seems really determined to stick to his original program, even if it means that his injury gets worse. I think he's putting too much pressure on himself to keep the spots for team Japan. I guess we'll see tomorrow?

I'm of the belief that Shoma didn't like what he had to do in the SP, tone down the difficulty and then that combi....I think he would've preferred to keep his layout and go down all guns blazing. That's why he will stay with his old layout now. He will fight. He might fail spectactularly, but I think he definitely doesn't want regrets. I think he will prefer to lose a medal instead of playing it safe. I think that really gnawed on him after the SP.

I thought he did 4S at lombardia and one of the GPs but 5 quads is too much hence the not so good result so he took it out at 4cc? I could be mistaken tho. Yes, I suppose let’s just wait and see. Good luck Shomaaaaa!!!!

I agree with you.

It's Shoma. He didn't get this far by playing it safe. He's an adult now. Let him do what he thinks he should. He played it safe and it didn't go well, might as well try his best with his original layout. He will fight, and he will fight hard, and whatever the result will be, I'll be very proud of him. That's the beauty of sports, isn't it? We don't just admire the winners, we admire and greatly respect the fighters and hard workers. So let him fight and be satisfied with his performance, no matter his placement. He can tell himself, "I didn't give up." That will be more important than winning.

Was anybody at practice this morning? I saw on twitter that Shoma fell several times on 4Lo. https://twitter.com/yawning_shoma/status/977187071264780289

Reading this report doesn't help me feel good about tomorrow's free. :( He should forget about the 4Flip and 4Loop and do the 4Toe and 4Sal. He can do a 4Sal, he's only done it twice in competition this season at the Lombardia Trophy and GPF, and they were both landed beautifully and with positive GOE's. I know he said he took it out of his jump layout because it wasn't consistent but he could maybe consider putting it back in. The 4Flip and 4Loop look like their not going to happen. :noshake: I wonder if he's going to keep his 3A-1L-3F combo or change it to a 3A-3T and also have a 3S-3T, but then he can't do a 4T-3T because you can't repeat a jump more than twice so he'd have to do the 4T-2T. I'm hoping he changes his jump layout but I don't know if he has time to practice a new layout.
This is stressing me out and I'm a Literature/Writing major who's constantly stressed out about school work.:hpull: I'm thinking about Shoma's FS program layout more than all the work I have due on Monday. Aahh such is the life of being a fan of the Winter Prince.

Yes, I agree with both of you.

Tone down the difficulty wasn't his "attack" style, and he wasn't happy about that (especially the failure of easy combo+ he didn't feel that pain during competition).

On the other hand, if Shoma is trying to get 3 spots for Japan, without his original layout, his BV will be too low compare with Nathan/ Vincent/ Boyang

I agree with you.

Thanks for the welcome and the interesting article, @demarinis5!

Shoma's so strong physically and mentally but I still think he's getting so much pressure. He's a hero, everybody in Japan must be really proud of him! I just hope he does his best and manages to stay healthy.

@MaiKatze, thanks for the Paul Fentz's dialogue traduction. He definitely knew something had happened with Shoma. I agree with you regarding he must have not been completely satisfied with changing his SP layout. That's why he's so determined to do his complete FP tomorrow. He's an intelligent guy and knows what to do. We can only wait and pray he'll be fine! 🙏🏻

@Danibellerika, your adventure to reach the medal ceremony definitely sounds like a PITA but I'm sure it was worth it. You were at a historic moment!!! 😊

Thanks for all your updates and the "air-head" term review (he's really intelligent, just doesn't focus on things that are not important to him). Lets see what happens tomorrow. Good luck, Shoma! Stay strong!

I was surprised that he landed 4F once today. I think that he has not landed it all week.

I got a different take from his interview. I thought he said the pain was not bad not that there was no pain
