Well Shoma barely eeked out first place in the SP.

Fall on the 4T combo which usually is his money jump was bizarre, maybe nerves.
Level 4 on his steps and spins yay!
Yes , probably nerves . With his sheer quality , he will likely be able to podium even in major competitions , but he will have to pull out these jumps if he wants gold against the like of Nathan Chen etc.

...and a perfect Long tomorrow.:points:

I would say between the short and the long, the long has always been his strong suit. I look for him to do well with that tomorrow. I think Uncle Kurt would say that he "got it done" in the SP, so I'm glad of that. Nice to see Level 4s on the step sequence and all but the one spin. Tomorrow is another day! :points: :ghug:

Hi everyone! Sorry for the late post, I intended to write but was crashing by Vincent's skate due to poor sleep and flight schedules. I was actually so sleepy that I was too numb to get nervous when Shoma skated.

Shoma generally looked good in warm-up, but you could tell he was nervous. He usually is a little anyway. The jumps looked good during warm-up- you probably saw that he did a beautiful 4T-3T and 3A, not so great 4F but repeated the 4F and the 2nd one was good. During the program, the 4F looked good to me (but I was staying at the side near the KnC, so the angle wasn't the best), the 4T looked fully rotated even when he fell, thus the gasp from the audience after, and the 3A looked good too. The hairography looked like an afterthought from where I was sitting, but I was in zombie mode so don't quote me.

Shoma had good flow and smooth skating throughout, got up immediately despite the fall, and maintained his performance. He did all his kakkoii difficult movements to the music. ;) I knew he would get 90+ for that performance. Everything looked fully rotated during both the performance and the slow-mo, so I wasn't worried about that. I was confident Voronov would not get ahead of him even with a clean skate, even BEFORE Voronov skated. I mean, good on him for doing a clean skate and being enthusiastic, but the smoothness and complexity of movement are not there, he's a slower skater, and the spins were also not the best. I was expecting either a high 80s or 90 tops for him, so the scores were satisfactory to me. Funny when they showed his expression after the skate during the replay and he was mouthing something there, he looked embarrassed when he saw it at the KNC.

Shocking confession- I did not cheer for Shoma because I was half-asleep, but the audience more than made up for it. They love him but are very respectful. No crazy screaming. The lady beside me had her personalized blue Turandot with gold stars banner with kanji on it (wasn't just his name). She was also telling a story to her companion in Japanese, the gist being that in the GPF last year, Shoma's grandfather was seated in front of her, and he was saying "Shoma..." in a shaky voice, over and over again. Not sure which program that was at (Sp or FS).

I don't mind the purple costume but I hope to see the red one next time. This costume isn't that nice to him. :| It does look darker as envacances said. The mighty thighs were toned down.

About people thinking the combo should not have gotten anything- BESP uncle Simon spread a bit of misinformation. When Shoma fell, he exclaimed that he wouldn't get any point for it because he didn't do the combo. I was a little astounded when I heard that, knowing otherwise.

Congraaaats to Shoma!! Another gold and GPF here we come!:yahoo: :hap93:

Not a flawless performance but no falls is all I wanted at this point after seeing almost all the men before him struggling so so much, I feared that maybe there was something wrong with the ice.

And thanks to NHK for the crown, he looked absolutely adorable :luv17:

CONGRATULATIONS TO SHOMA for his Gold medal win by a Landslide. :yahoo::dance:

Not sure what his naysayers will complain about today (does it really matter) because unless your are blind it is pretty clear
who the superior skater was at this competition.

A crown fit for a Prince! Congratulations Shoma! It's your day! So happy to see him come through at a competition in Japan, the place where he experiences the most nerves. Technically, he was far superior to anyone else at this competition. Love the contrast between the SP and FS. So excited to see how both programs have evolved so much, just since Shombardia. Keep working on that stamina, keep polishing (after all, your name is Chang Polish), and most of all keep believing in yourself!

:dance2: :points: :thank: :ghug: :party2: :hb: :hap10: :cheer: :yahoo:

Hahaha all the hater totally quite down today. I feel such liberated today. Actually I really want Shoma to skate clean and hit that 200 and then look at what they will complain today, just for fun!

CONGRATULATIONS to Shoma on his first NHK win!!!! :yahoo: :hb::yahoo: :hb::yahoo: :hb: I'm really starting to like the FS. It's just so beautiful. Like our commentator said, a master class of edge and turns. What else do you need? :)

I love the laurel crown :) It suits Shoma so much!
The first place trophy is also really pretty in my opinion.

Congratulations, Shoma! He looked really ready today, I wasn't worried at all. Love the costume. And yes, I've confirmed that moonlight sonata is wonderfully absorbing in person. I didn't at all feel that anything was "empty". He had my attention from the beginning to the end of that performance. He was so cute on the podium!

I might write something longer later, but just wanted to say that the crowd here loved him. It almost felt like he was a relative of theirs in how they were cheering for him. They were super excited to see him too- I was seated in front (um, was probably on cam several times actually), and when we stood up rinkside to greet the men skaters during their victory lap, I almost got pushed onto the ice because a lady accidentally bumped into me. [emoji28] There was a sea of red Uno Shoma towels in the crowd too! So cool.

On to the GPF!

:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: Many congrats to Shoma for winning NHK at his very first showing there, which is of course well-earned!

But, boy, he missed quads just because he jumped too high and over-rorated upon landings?!
During Skate Canada, I think I noticed that his jumps got higher than last season. This boy improves a lot and fast every season.
