Shoma Uno: 2014-2024

I felt so nervous the last few days about this SP debut 😆 Unlike last year where Shoma did Oboe with a competition layout for jumps in shows and even under competition lights (since there was an extra day at Japan Open/Carnival on Ice for SP skating), I don't think Shoma's skated Gravity before with his competitive jumps (I think he did once at PIW Tokyo but it was like... once). So I was quite nervous!

Overall, it's not his best skate technically, but not a disaster either. I think the 4T+1T really took a lot out of his time, he was kind of running behind the music (still pretty harmonious though) but the program didn't fall apart. And that save on the 3A!!!!! Phew, that was close, he could have been in a more disadvantaged position if he didn't land it.

Gravity is an interesting program, in my opinion- it's really more difficult than it looks to sell the laidback, sultry vibe of the program. Almost lazy. It's not as "obviously" competitive as other figure skating programs are, it sounds and flows more like an exhibition. I have read feedback from those who loved it and those who weren't feeling it, but I think overall the vibe of the program is well conveyed based on those feedbacks- whether the music is likable or not and the choreography is boring or compelling depends on everyone's taste.

Well, Shoma has to start somewhere. I was a bit bummed about the combo because he did some really nice 4T3Ts in practice even when his practice was uneven. But I'm sure he'll work on those mistakes for his next skates.

His skating remains exquisite, it has really matured well. I know Gravity isn't perfect yet but a few years ago I couldn't even imagine Shoma skating this type of program and choreography for competition. It's a good challenge, I'm glad he took it. Fight at the free skate tomorrow!

PS. I LOVE the color of his new SP costume. Design-wise it's acceptable enough, but the color is just so pretty.

I must say I feel quite lucky today. One of my dreams was to get Shoma's autograph. I was able to find the secret exit after the competition and waited a long time for him to emerge. After a little confusion (because someone else had requested a selfie at the same time I requested an autograph) he was kind enough to give me one. It actually looks a little different than I expected it to look (maybe because it's horizontal?), so I did a double take. I almost expected to see Kao's name tag on him, but no, it was in fact Shoma! The way he interacted with others was far different than I had seen him interact before. He was actually doing the ✌ sign while taking selfies with others, which is something I haven't seen before in selfies with him that have been posted online before. Shoma was so relaxed and happy to see his fans, I couldn't believe it! It was a far cry from the Shoma in a hurry to get away from everyone that I had seen at Skate America last year! There were a couple of kids there too, he was kind enough to give autographs and take pictures with them. I thought I would be utterly excited about this if it ever happened...yet I am still very calm. I suspect we have both changed a lot over this past year...

Wow yuumagical, I'm so happy for you!! Also glad to hear Shoma seemed to enjoy his time interacting with fans. The autograph looks very different from his usual indeed! Could he have changed it a bit recently?

About Gravity - some mistakes, but overall I'm pretty happy with what he put out there considering this point of the season. It's funny how the score is almost exactly the same as in his first GP last season! It's something he can start building the program from. The overall feeling of Gravity is promising too.
Hoping for a FS he can be happy with! 🙏

It's completely possible that he could have changed it in a way that better reflects his current mental state or his status as a world champion (or something that just looks cooler to him). I've intentionally changed my signature before, so I can relate.

About Gravity-- I'm glad he added a combo and set himself up in a good place for the free. 😉 Upon rewatching it, I was astonished by how sped-up it looked compared to when I watched it live. I was like "Wait a second, he's actually doing everything that fast?!?" when the choreography itself felt as if it was done in a slow and sensual way live. Of course, we all know he goes incredibly fast, but to create the illusion of slowness while traveling fast is on a whole different level...

From seeing him both on and off of the ice, it's as if he's a completely different Shoma, even though he's the same Shoma. It kind of blows my mind...(I would love to hear Arriba's thoughts on this)

That's so fantastic! I could tell the audience really loved seeing Shoma and he's so kind to do autographs and photos.

So happy for you yuumagical! I know you will treasure your treasure! When the circumstances are right, he is very kind about signing autographs...Beautiful skate, in spite of him really getting dinged on the combo. Guess the judges didn't like the Uno toe. :laugh2: In spite of that, he definitely skated like a world champion! He is head and shoulders above the rest of the field. The way he feels the music, he IS the music. Thank you to those marshmallow knees, great save on the 3A!

About the costume, it was so funny at yesterday's practice. When he took off his jacket, everyone clapped and cheered when they saw a new costume. LOL...Going to see his practice for the FS in a bit. He'll be fine. He's a great long program skater. Now I'm wondering if we'll see another new costume.

Ok guys. Prayer circle! Send good energy. :ghug:  💜

Ha! Couldn't agree with you more. It's like two different people. Off ice, he's this tiny, quiet, soft-spoken, diminutive guy. Then he steps on the ice and lets his skating do the talking. The skating says "I am large and in charge.". And he skates BIIIIIIIGGGGG!

Of course I know about the on-ice/off-ice distinction, it's one of the things that I love about Shoma! It's more of the this season/last season distinction that I was thinking about...a lot more calm and confident (though sleepy at the moment), and not quite as fiercely focused.

I have no doubts that Shoma will excel in the long program. He's done it more over the summer so it's polished and he can make adjustments as he goes along since he knows the program much better than, IMO, Gravity. But, he did what he needed to do to set himself up for the FS where he gets twice the time to really shine! Huddling hard for the Prince to shine above all others. (I hope he keeps the blue sparkly costume & my favorite pants. That is a showstopper that not everyone has seen. It's a great match for the music).
