Happy World Ice Skating Day everyone! Somehow on this day we are blessed by a French and Japanese lesson video by Shoma and Stephane... thank you Olympic Channel!

Bravo to whoever came up with the idea, I love this segment with Shoma and Stephane!

The GPF is fast approaching and Shoma looks to be in good condition from the few clips I have seen. I have high hopes for him.

That was great! I think we've been waiting so long for that, I completely forgot about it! His French pronunciation is pretty good!

Adding: I gotta hear that "Je m'appelle Shoma" again. Wait, did I spell that right? Probably not!
You spelled that right! I tried learning French after going to France for Worlds this year...but then stopped studying it after Shoma decided to go to Canada. 😆 Different people have different second languages that are right for them...maybe French could be good for Shoma? I think I'll stick with Japanese, lol.

As for my thoughts about GPF, all I can say is that I'm embracing the "no expectations and a lot of hope" attitude once more. 😊

^^^Glad to see that even though he has stellar spins, he still puts a lot of time into them! I think his spins have gotten even better under Stepen's excellent guidance! Nice to see a few new variations too. :points:

This would be a good pair of photos for a caption contest. I think Stephane is saying "Little did I know what I was getting into when I agreed to coach this guy!!!!" That's ok Steph, we understand! :laugh2: Really, we do! :ghug::console:

Oh so this was the part of the interview where they speak in each other’s languages. I wondered when we’d see it. Nice job Shoma and Stephane 👏🏻 that was very entertaining to watch. It makes me wonder if Shoma will learn more English and French in the future? He doesn’t have to speak them fluently to speak them. Actually not being fluent but speak some of the language is very attractive.

I would hope he learns more of either of those languages so his English- and French-speaking fans can understand him better...

But is it just me, or does Shoma's voice sound cute no matter which language he speaks? 😳 I have a feeling he wouldn't like to be complimented like that...but there's something really cute about it...😅😊

Edit: When I say "cute" I mean that it sounds rather childlike and innocent... even though he isn't either of those things. 😅

I agree. A lot of people use a different voice when they speak another language. I give him a lot of credit that he is not afraid to try. Many people are too embarrassed...I wish Manager-san would do another English lesson video with him. That was great.

He sounds adorable, ngl (I feel like his voice matches his face? xD). I could listen to him speak all day long (especially in Japanese - love how soft spoken he is), but his English/French speaking voice is especially cute *-*

No, it's not just you. I do think Shoma's voice fits the melodic way French is pronounced really well 🥰

I don't know if it's just my imagination/wishful thinking, but when I listen to Stephane and Shoma talk in recent K&Cs i do feel that Shoma's english has something of Stephane's french accent and it just makes me all 🥺❤️
Yes, I feel the same. Their similar accent really reminds me of how much Shoma has grown, and that in the last few years, Stephane is his mentor, coach and one of the biggest influences in Shoma's life and career.

vowels in French are close to the vowels in Japanese. The issue for anyone learning French would be the grammar.
And yes, we do have different voices in different languages. Voice placement can vary. I speak much lower in English than in French.
I sucked at Japanese and Mandarin... but never really tried much... German was not bad for me but I lost it all. I love languages... what I can tell is that people can communicate, create their own communication signals so I am sure that Shoma and Stéphane do just fine. I once studied with someone who only spoke Russian, and I was just fine and I didn't speak it myself.

Personally I don’t think Shoma is cute at all. He is handsome. Cute is more for describing a child or a puppy.

German was not bad for me

That's interesting! People learning German often struggle with the "hard" (edgy) way of speaking as they call it (though it does not feel edgy for natives). How was it for you?
(sorry for OT but Shoma is the cause for this new conversation about languages here, so I'd say it's probably related enough 😅 )

he has (for me) this duality where he’s generally looking (or acting) cute/adorable/goofy up until he steps on the ice during competitions and then bam, he gets super serious and focused and utterly gorgeous/handsome … I’m in constant awe

I am a musician. I grew up listening to Schubert and Schumann Lieder. It's in my ears, just like Shoma is in my eyes and heart :)
