Shoma went to Toyota Sports Summer Camp for children of Toyota employees today! He talked about the importance of facing challenges to grow. They also made him do a cantilever on land, LOL.

Shoma Uno definitely led this show. He was the best captain and super realistic Luffy.

At the same time, I felt the greatness of the work "One Piece" and the strong power of the character so much that our own personalities disappeared.
Luffy is a character who is always smiling, so Shoma naturally smiled more, and Koshiro, who played Sanji, was cool all the time. Marin (Honda), who played Vivi, was really amazing because she always put her feelings into her performance as her anger, sadness, and emotions were changing rapidly. That's how much everyone was into the world of "One Piece".

But it was Shoma who led the cast. I have nothing but respect for the way he erased the "Shoma Uno" and became a character that was the complete opposite of his usual self.

And of course, he was the captain of the team from the practice stage, not to mention the show. I was so impressed by his determination to make this show better than anyone else's from every action he took.

And it wasn't just when he was on the ice. When the curtain was about to rise, they also led the circle. Before the show, they would say, "Let's go! Let's set sail!" and after the show, they would say, "Good job! Let's do it again next time! Dismissed!" in a loud voice. I almost cried when I saw Shoma in the middle of the circle.

I know how great he is in competition, and I've been watching him for years, so I've gotten used to it (laughs), but seeing how amazing he is outside of competition for the first time in a long time made me shiver. I was shaken to see him in a way that I hadn't seen in a long time outside of his performances.

And this time, when I saw Shoma Uno's Luffy, I felt it was "ultra-realistic." I think it's because we share the same attitude of never giving up on anything and the same way of life. I think that the path that Shoma has taken up to now is what made his performance absolutely convincing.

"I'm relatively good at figure skating as a sport." :laugh2: Yes, 2-time World champion, you're RELATIVELY good! I especially appreciate the comments from Kazuki. I'm glad it was such a positive experience for everyone involved. The costumes and attention to detail were phenomenal. They're going to have big crowds at the Nagoya shows!

People are starting to post photos of some of the cool merchandise they bought at OPOI. Sure wish they would make it easy for us overseas people to buy things.

Do you know the Nexflix series of "One Piece" (with human actors)? There, Luffy doesn't behave like a laughing maniac, but is more quiet. I find this good. Perhaps, that's the right approach to this character when being played by humans, i.e. is transferred into reality: not trying to imitate the unreal Manga behaviour since it's simply not possible and belongs to the world of Mangas with its exaggerations. Perhaps, this approach could also be a feasible one for the ice show.

Yes, I agree! But also in the videos that shows the content of the actual ice show of ONE PIECE on Ice (not the introduction and not the finale that's shared by many fans, where they are mostly greeting the fans and audience), you can see that Luffy in the ice show had scenes that doesn't require him to behave like a laughing maniac, and expressed himself accordingly.

You can see some of the scenes in the performance preview video they posted earlier this week:



I think the difference in character that is talked about by Shoma's friends and co-stars is also about how Luffy is the main character of the anime, and that he shows his emotion in his face easily (whether it be happiness, anger, determination, or anything else). Keiji, Koshiro and Kazuki have worked with Shoma for a long time in competitions and shows, and being the main character and center of attention in an ice show is not a natural thing for Shoma. He is a reliable backbone for the ice shows that he is in, but even in something like The ICE where he is their top headliner (since 2018), he mostly leads by example (meaning he is very good in what he brings on the ice individually, even in shows) but not really enjoying having the show made to center him, preferring to insist that the show is about everyone who is skating there. And while he is an expressive skater in his programs, Shoma doesn't really "act" as a character, and he has to do it when he's playing Luffy. That's the biggest difficulty and unknown factor when he took on this project, and I think people who know him (and watched Japanese figure skating) understands that, including Kenji Miyamoto who choreographed the show. Which I think is why it kept coming up as a question.

But I do enjoy this kind of discussion though, because this is something different and new in Shoma's career that is very unexpected, which I didn't expect to happen at this stage of his career. One of my thoughts about ONE PIECE and an ice show is that I think skating can bring a new, cool dimension in interpreting shonen anime fight scenes and battle scenes in real life that may be different compared to stage plays (of course a film or series production that can be further produced with effects and VFX is different). But at the same time, shonen anime/manga, especially something like ONE PIECE, isn't exactly thought as high art, so people who watch figure skating for artistry may not necessarily vibe with it. So it's like a tricky project overall, even if it is one of the biggest anime franchises in the world if not the biggest. And that Shoma is doing it with what we know of him as a skater so far is a big risk, but I appreciate him taking the opportunity.

I do really hope we can watch the full show somewhere someday though, because I really want to see how Shoma performed in full (and the show itself seems fun to watch).

Hehe, the talk show rule is you can't spoil the contents of the talk show (including the guest) until 5PM local time (so in 10 minutes) so I was waiting for the time to pass.

Now that fans are able to spoil, yes indeed, the special guest at Shoma's Mizuno talk show was Kazuki, and the moderator was Keiji. This does remind me of their legendary Nowvoice recordings in the 2022 summer, I miss those a lot.
