I wonder what kind of chocolate? There is so many kinds. Canned food? No trying the cuisine from the country the competition is in?
He bought chocolates from the airports he's been, but Shoma is known to buy Leonidas chocolates when he's in Japan (I don't think he necessarily has a favorite brand though). He bought the kind that's covered in white chocolate.

The canned food (and other instant food) story is related to the time when he is in quarantine and avoiding public spaces to eat like at Worlds 2021 and Olympics 2022. I remember him telling Mura after winning bronze that he's running out of food 😁 they were understandably cautious about eating food they didn't bring themselves during that Olympics and going to public spaces like Olympic cafeteria before they finished their individual evemts.

It's a scene from the anime/manga between Luffy and Vivi. So Vivi is the princess of Alabasta and she is trying to stop the war between the Kingdom and the Rebels by appealing to the Rebels, who is led by her childhood friend Koza. But in the middle of the journey to the rebels, Luffy stopped and disagreed with her, saying that she's naive for shouldering the burden alone/ thinking she can stop the war alone while also wishing no one dies in the war, hence the fighting. Eventually they agree that Luffy will go to fight Crocodile (the villain who is responsible for the conflict- lack of water- that made the Kingdom and the Rebels fight each other) and that they will risk all their lives to beat Crocodile and save Alabasta.

It was honestly a pretty good scene in the ice show 😁 the camera couldn't get too close but it's not just the facial acting, the physical acting was also really good. And they did a couple skating elements together like paired butterflies to convey the argument and the fight. There have been a lot of comments for smiling Shoma as Luffy, but I thought his acting here was really well done, balancing this sort of straightfaced brutal honesty when he points out that the plan isn't working and gradual frustration when he had to face the increasingly distressed Vivi.

And on the fight: they were shadowpunching each other (although Shoma and Marin did say they hit each other accidentally in practices, lol) but Shoma was really good at phsyically conveying the reactions of being punched. Fans said that he even did a trick to make sure that his straw hat flew away right on time when Marin punched him, which I thought seems like a small detail but it's probably harder than it looks to arrange.

Oh I wish I could have seen it. I think I heard it’s permanently saved on a Japanese streaming service. Could it be possible to get an account to see it? So Koza was not a bad guy?

Koza's not a bad guy! He's the leader of the Rebels, and so the bad guy Crocodile manipulated the situation to make the Kingdom of Alabasta and the Rebels (that also consist of people of Alabasta) blame each other for the loss of water in their country and fight each other in a war. Eventually Koza listened to Vivi and understood that they have been manipulated but in the anime/manga he was shot after (by Crocodile's men in disguise) so he wasn't able to stop his rebels from attacking the soldiers of the Kingdom.

It was streamed on a Japanese streaming service Abema TV for 14 days, but now they have deleted the archive.

So now no one can see it anymore?! That’s so unfair! 😭 Hyoen from 2019 can still be viewed by fans online. Yes, Shoma wasn’t in it but that’s to prove a point that the Japanese media allowed that show to be available to see years later. They should let One Piece be available indefinitely.

It's more difficult with ONE PIECE because a lot of copyrights are involved, compared to Hyoen. And Hyoen was also uploaded by fans, and Shoma fans are a lot more strict regarding the rules of not uploading or distributing videos illegally compared to other fans of Japanese skaters.

Shoma's "What I want to do with the rest of my skating career" Toyota Times interview. Yes, we get to see some beautiful practice skating! Some day, my dream will come true and there will be subtitles. Or better yet, I'll suddenly be understanding what they're saying, as some people have claimed. (I've been listening to Japanese since 2015 and it hasn't happened yet,so I'm not too hopeful)

I'll link any translations I find here for you, Arriba (and for me too, lol) 😂

Also someone appeared on the TV Asahi GP series opening before Skate America...

:ot:I'm not fluent in Japanese by any means, but I do think that taking classes from a Japanese teacher is the best way to start learning it. Surely there must be a community college or a language school near you that has a Japanese teacher. There's also online/remote Japanese teachers out there (I did this during the pandemic for a while). I also recommend the Lingodeer app! It's got good explanations of Japanese grammar and a variety of useful ways to study Japanese! (No, I am not sponsored by Lingodeer! 🤣) I know I didn't start understanding Japanese overnight...as they say, Rome was not built in a day...

Already signed up for a class at the junior college but made the mistake of signing up for a summer class that moved SO fast. I used to teach foreign language, so I know how to learn a language. Had to face reality that I either am going to travel like I want to or take classes. Can't do both. I opted for the travel. Thus I will continue waiting for osmosis to kick in. :laugh2: BTW The teacher was a wonderful Japanese lady.

You could take remote classes and travel at the same time as long as you have an internet connection...lol 😆

Seriously though, having money to be able to travel as one pleases is important. I suppose I could recommend Lingodeer again, it has plenty of free lessons...😁

Also for the 2018 Olys, mother was with him and cooked his food. That turned out to be a good idea. There was an outbreak of Norovirus right before the games started. Lucky Sho had mom there to make his niku and rice.

Translation for the Toyota interview. Bless you feimeicheng.

To summarize it briefly, Shoma accomplished a lot thanks to his difficult jumps layouts through last 2 seasons. But he understands he can do more for the artistry. He had conflicts with Stephane actually when Stephane asked him to make more efforts on other elements besides jumps. But back then Shoma was in need for good results at his competitive career so he couldn’t response to his coach well. Since he won everything he needed(*these are my words), now is the timing to pursuit what he really knows about that shows the true beauty of this sport.
The two screenshots I took is when Shoma said:
“Even I might fail to be a good leader for younger skaters anymore because of this switch of approach, I hope I can show them something important in this sport by my performances.”

He was worried about how this sport will turn to when the rules set so much weight on jumps. But he emphasized he is not complaining but just wanted to remind everyone the greatness in this sport back to years ago and that is the reason why he was fascinated by this sport.😇

That is true.

He will still be a great leader. Figure skating is so much more than just jumps. He has it in him to bring it with more artistry and less technicality. Besides, those that want to love and support his skating will continue to do so no matter what. The parts he has shared so far for this season look so beautiful 💖 go get’em Uno! 💪🏻

More Shoma interview, this one seems to be taken yesterday and aired today:

Some choice Shoma quotes in the above Twitter thread that I ran through Deep L for translation:

- "I already want to perform for myself, and I want to do well in the performance I'm striving for."

- "I have to work on my jumps, if I focus on the result. I have been too fixated on jumps, and I have been painfully aware of my performance, "I don't want to see it again, I don't want to see it again," I have been thinking."

- "I think that the more effort you put into expression, the harder the program will be. I think it is probably more difficult than it looks, because the part that was a break is no longer a break. I really want to be satisfied, and first of all, I want to convince myself."

- "I think the best way to express how I feel now is to give my all. First of all, I want to give 100% to my jumps, expressions, spins, and all other aspects of my performance."

Shoma had a practice that was open to the public. I like this quote that says Shoma says he's training with so much motivation that his physical energy isn't catching up with the things he wants to do. He is giving multiple interviews where he is saying basically the same things. I like what I'm reading though, because it seems that as his Cup of China event is getting closer, he is definitely motivated! Go Shoma! We can't wait to see you!!! :hap10: :party2::cheer: "I want to make jumps part of the expression, give 100% to transitions. There's still more that I can do."
