Also for those who missed pre-blonde Shoma, he uploaded a video on his Youtube where he gets advice from his friends and Smash Bro pro gamers at andmore (Kept, Shogun, FILIP, Paseriman, Omnaoto) on what character should he use as main. Majority advised him to use Lucina, and Shoma wants to train hard so he can go to Kagaribi next year as a player.



It's so cute. It's like Shoma has 5 older brothers giving him advice on Smash Bros 😂 Omnaoto (fittingly edited with a wall of text when he talked) is a professional Smash Bros commentator, who knows, maybe Shoma can pick up some tips for his own commentary.... on skating....

I'm really disappointed by this too-- I haven't even seen any of the news clips of Ice Brave because I thought there would be a full recording forthcoming. He knows most of his overseas fans won't be able to get to see Ice Brave and this has been highly anticipated...why isn't there a full recording?!? 😫 There's a small part of me that hopes he's trolling about this, but the part that isn't just makes me want to :bang:

Edit: Thinking about this a little more, Shoma probably didn't think that Ice Brave would be the smash hit it seems to have been, hence no full video...surely he'll have more faith in himself next time, if there is a next time? Coming from the perspective of someone who is also self-critical, it might not be a realistic thing to hope for...but I can hope a little, I guess?

A professional recording of a performance is quite a challenge. It needs to be planned well in advance because it requires different lighting and sound setup. From what fans who watched The Ice Brace wrote, the lighting was rather standard. Perhaps Shoma didn’t expect such interest and that’s why he didn’t prepare the show for a professional recording.

From what I can remember about watching the show live, I think the lighting was pretty good and is not that different from the standard of most shows that have video recordings.

I think the bigger issue is likely the music rights that must be secured for recordings, which can add to the production costs significantly. The show did use a lot of songs and very few of them are classical pieces (which is less strict on the copyright).

Adding: I still regret missing the chance to see the silver medal in 2018. When Sho came to train in Chicago, one day he brought it to the rink to show everyone. As bad luck would have it, I had a doctor appointment that day and missed seeing it. He had his picture taken with all the skaters at the rink, and Coach Alex and Coach Chris had pictures with it too. It's such a beautiful medal.

It's amusing to me that the gorgeous Olympic medals are finally out in fresh air after a while........ because of Shoma's sense of humor on Twitter 🤣 I think we have never seen them all side by side because of the delay on the team Silver, but I can be wrong.

They are gorgeous. And also isn't it timely? 3 puppies born, 3 medals out...

Also I missed this during the excitement of the first Ice Brave shows, but Olympics.com actually has a pretty solid write-up on Ice Brave in English!

Only comment I would make is that Shoma's "Absolutely." is actually "Absolutely not." when he's asked about whether he misses competing, LOL. But the rest seems to be in line with the Japanese coverage especially from the main press conference he has after the show. I lowkey love the writer's deadpan tone 🤣 yes, it's important for us to know that Shoma had dyed his hair blonde.

Also, Shoma's joking tweet with his 2018 Olympic silver medal has escalated with other Olympic medalists Nao Kodaira (speed skating) and Aaron Wolf (judo) as well, and let's just say... he looks a bit different now. It's really hard to explain his Twitter account, LOL, at first it *was* about gaming but now it's really about him having fun with Twitter 😅

But those medals were shown on Itsuki's longtime account, not Shoma's...

Shoma only showed the one medal as far as I know? (Note that I am no longer on Twitter for various reasons.)

Yes, Shoma's account only posted 1 medal (the silver from Olys 2018). The joke is, he tried using it to prove he's the real Shoma Uno without revealing his identity, because there's a Twitter user wondering if his account is real and not an impersonation. This is obviously for fun and is pretty useless, because Shoma has posted links to his Youtube account and photos of himself on Twitter.

Shoma got teased for it by Nao Kodaira, who said if it's just an Olympic silver medal from 2018, she also has it (she has 1 gold and 1 silver from 2018 Olympics for speed skating)... she told Shoma to at least take photos of the back of the medal, which would have the athletic discipline (men's figure skating) engraved on it.

And then the official Olympic / IOC Twitter account in Japanese quoted Shoma saying but Shoma Uno has 3 Olympic medals... which then caused another round of laughter because it was like the Olympics Twitter itself doubted Shoma's Twitter authenticity because he posted 1 medal instead of 3 medals. What a problem, right?

The guy Shoma posted on his Twitter, Aaron Wolf, has 3 Olympic medals in judo, 1 gold from 2020 and 2 silvers from 2020 and 2024. He joined the fun by quoting Olympics with a photo his own medals (from the SUMMER Olympics) saying that... I'm sorry... it seems it is actually me who is Shoma Uno (because he has 3 medals). Shoma was on his replies going, hasn't Shoma Uno grown bigger than the last time I saw him???? because obviously, Aaron is a lot bigger than Shoma and has joined pro wrestling after his retirement from judo, and people were cackling because now it seems Shoma Uno's entered pro wrestling 😭

Japanese Twitter found this whole banter between Olympic medalists AND the Olympic itself very funny for some reason, because the engagement numbers for all of them are insane, Shoma adds more than 20,000 followers for tweeting that right before a very busy weekend of skating in Japan. My favorite is just someone saying "the ice rink is overgrown with grass" because "grass" in Japanese is slang for laughter 😭

Also Shoma's latest Tweet, which is a screenshot of Aaron Wolf's youtube video from his own channel (meaning, Shoma's checked out his channel) is a riff from Demon Slayer, saying would you like to become an Uno too? And now people are like, well now if you have 3 Olympic medals, you can be Shoma Uno!!!!!

Sorry for laying it down because it's sending me just how Shoma is like... very good at Twitter humor (Twitter, not X) and also somehow manages to involve so many unrelated people hrhrhrhr. I'm not even wondering if he has previously used Twitter in the past (because at this point he OBVIOUSLY has). I'm wondering if his account was one of those big accounts that would just post clickbait things 😭

Also Itsuki's post on Instagram has this in the captions, which is a joke (Itsuki follows Shoma on Twitter), and also as you can see the background of the medals are the same in their photos:

Christmas in July! A package from Japan arrived yesterday for me! Thank you kind friend! Feels like a belated birthday present too. The Kiss & Cry magazine is a great walk through of (mostly) Sho's competitive career. And the Toro and Emma coasters from the Uno1 Cafe are so fun. Thank you!

Olympic Channel has a new interview with Shoma about Ice Brave! In English, and there's a 5 minute interview in it that has English subtitles. Very easy to understand!

He talks quite extensively about him challenging ice dance in the interview, it's really good.

Being a professional gamer is seriously tough. The reason I respect gamers is because they’ve spent as much time on gaming as I’ve spent on skating. Unlike skating, which you can only do on ice, gaming isn’t limited like that. But still, because I’ve put so much time into skating, I understand how much effort it takes to get to that level in anything. That’s exactly why I have so much respect for them, and I know it’s absolutely impossible for me to reach that level in gaming. So I just play within the scope of a hobby.

Edited to add: I am impressed of how direct the interviewer is about asking Shoma's thoughts on future ice dance prospects. And while he is very realistic that his skills are not enough now.... it sounds pretty open.....

Definitely fascinating to see retired singles skaters doing this for show and fun first because most of them are doing it to come back to competition. Both him and Marin really are ones who can enjoy and indulge in such exploration without needing any competition, and luck is on my side that I get to watch it live...
