Shoma Uno

Shoma skated at Prince Ice World Kagoshima today! He did his new program choreographed by Marin, The Spectre, with a new costume!

Reports said he jumped 4T, 3A/2A and a couple of 3Los, and he had a choreo where he took off his jacket/hoodie during the program 👀

And of course this being PIW we have a lot of photos on Twitter. Kagoshima is pretty far so I'm glad Shoma fans came and are sharing the photos!

Wow! 🤩 I love the look. I hope a video of the performance will be posted.

I knew it! I knew it! I knew Shoma was going to skate to Harry Potter and look like him. There are so many songs from the movies he could skate to. My first guess will be Hedwig’s Theme since that is I think a main theme for the series.
It's likely that the piece he will be skating to is the piano transcript that's done by Jarrod Radnich here, which I think is a piano version of Hedwig's Theme, so you're right!

Beatrice Berrut will play the piano piece live so I wonder if she'll make some arrangements too! It is listed in the Champery show programme:

Pretty excited since Shoma and piano is always an interesting combination, and the HP music is something he's never quite done before during his competitive years, with a bit of lightness and cheekiness in the theme.

The Japan Olympic Committee (JOC) has a "One Step Declaration" campaign to support athletes for 2024 Olympics, and Shoma contributed by declaring his step "to be a supportive presence". Very fitting after his competitive retirement!

Also. More Shoma posing with Sota 😁

Instagram update! Shoma looks like he really likes his new costume hehe 😁

Machine translation is around like this:

"Thank you for the (Prince Ice World) Kagoshima performance. It's the most enjoyable new program with a new arrangement of choreography for each performance, how did you like it? I will skate it again someday!"

Some interviews about behind-the-scenes at OPOI with Shoma, Mura, Marin and Rika Hongo. I thought it is nice that even though it's going to be a re-run of the show last year, they still have a dedicated period to practice and put it all together - hopefully it prevents injuries too.

And photos of Shoma and Mura in a (paywalled, unfortunately) joint interview for Mainichi!

Just wanted to share this brief but powerful mention of Shoma in a joint interview with Kazuki and Daisuke Takahashi.
Kazuki said: 'I was just talking to (Uno) Shoma the other day. He said: 'We are lucky. We have the great Dai-chan and Mao (Asada) above us, and we were able to grow up watching them. So let's do our best." 🥹
Kazuki's line before the mention is very much embodying Shoma's spirit too:

"... I want to treasure what Dai-chan has created and play a role in connecting it to the future. And I want to keep my feet firmly on the ground and move forward without getting carried away. That's all. I've also had the opportunity to closely study how Dai-chan created his shows, so I want to find my own path while following his example. If I go in exactly the same direction as Dai-chan, I won't be able to show my individuality."

So there is admiration and gratitude for the opportunities to study from their seniors, but also the understanding that in order to move forward, they should believe in and find their own paths. Whether in the future Kazuki will inherit Dai's shows, or do something new, it is important that it is something that he decides for himself.

Just a thought I had today.... could/would Shoma participate in Japan Open?
Yes, Shoma could still participate in Japan Open because retired skaters are allowed to skate in it (I think each team has one retired skater per team, but correct me if I'm wrong).

Whether Shoma would want to participate in it is another story... My personal guess is no. I think he would want a break from a competitive environment, knowing how much he struggled with staying motivated last season. Also, I can't seem to find any information about when Japan Open will be held this year!

I also think Shoma will likely take 1-2 years off before doing any pro competition like Japan Open. He may appear as a guest skater during the break between the disciplines, or at the ice show/gala attached to JO, Carnival on Ice.

Japan Open will be held in early October as always, but I think they are planning to use a different venue other than Saitama Super Arena since it's still unannounced.

Also great 2-part interview with Mihoko Higuchi where she talked about Shoma's conversations with her about his retirement, as well as how he has influenced her coaching in her own club. Will try to machine translate it soon but it's very insightful and heartwarming!
