Skaters and coaches among victims in DC plane crash

Um okay. Not sure the relevance or why it was even brought up
It was brought up as the story is circulating that the skater in question had missed that specific flight when they weren't scheduled to be on it. That was the context, it is relevant since there is a lot of information going around about the crash and the skater has likely been dealing with unwanted attention over that particular misunderstanding.

It was just mentioned by Global News Canada

In spring 2025, five new nonstop routes will launch from Washington-Reagan National Airport (DCA):
  • Delta Air Lines: Nonstop service from DCA to Seattle (SEA) on March 9, 2025
  • Southwest Airlines: Nonstop service from DCA to Las Vegas (LAS) on February 13, 2025
  • Alaska Airlines: Nonstop service from DCA to San Diego (SAN) on March 18, 2025
  • American Airlines: Nonstop service from DCA to San Antonio (SAT) on March 2, 2025
  • United Airlines: Nonstop service from DCA to San Francisco (SFO) on February 14, 2025
These routes were made possible by the Federal Aviation Administration funding bill from last year. The new flights are the latest exemptions to the rule that prohibits flights longer than 1,250 miles from DCA.

@Magill mentioned earlier in this thread that Jon Maravilla did not board the plane because his dog was not allowed to fly with him. I don't know if this is confirmed, but that's what I was referencing in my earlier post. Fate that he was not aboard, if this described incident about his dog is true.
My SIL (The Real Diana Delafield whose name I use on GS) remembers the Sabena crash. I just had a message from her about this, mentioning that in 1961 the Canadian and later world pairs champions Otto and Maria Jelinek had arranged to fly to Worlds with their American friends on that flight, since they were in the States at the time. But Maria was an extremely sound sleeper and overslept that morning, causing them to miss the flight.

One of America's most promising young skaters, Laurence Owen, perished with her famed
skating coach mother, Maribel Vinson Owen, when the Sabena jet carrying them and other young members--and coaches and
parents--crashed near Brussels en route to the Worlds Competition in Prague in February, 1961. Laurence and other members had trained
at the Skating Club of Boston; she was lauded for her vivacity and her musicality and was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated as "America's Most Exciting Girl Skater."

Here is a clip from the documentary about the 1961 crash, featuring Laurence and others (ignore the misspellings), Reflections On Ice:

As a pilot, this whole mess was so sad...normal staffing is one guy to handle choppers, one guy to handle fixed wing. Only they had one and only one guy for both. So that guy gave permission to the chopper to use "visual separation", which the chopper requested. Was the chooper looking at the wrong aircraft? Three were coming in on the flight path in a row. The controller is handling all three plus everyone waiting to take off between landings, plus the choppers. And we still dont know if the chopper pilot in command had night goggles on. As a pilot, I am ashamed of the FAA to allow airports to operate at this capacity being understaffed. This wont be the only incident. I will save my politics on what is really happening for another forum as to why all these close calls are happening.

Overwhelming 24 hours. I remember seeing one of the youngest passengers on this plane at the NDC in a previous year. Their determination to skate strongly was apparent even then. Had to phone my kid today at school to let them know what happened. Very difficult call to make.

My thoughts are with all the families affected directly and indirectly by this shocking event. May they be able to push through the pain by focusing on how special each soul was, and the gift of their presence on this earth.

Personally, I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge the coaches on this flight (there were four, ranging in ages from the mid-40s to late 50s?). All of them were active coaches, with excellent training, dedicated to showing up at a rink every day to impart their wisdom to the next generation of skaters. This type of historical knowledge is priceless, really - a crucial link to figure skating history.

There are plenty of top skaters who never end up coaching. What these coaches did for their students went beyond a mere technical lesson. Their dedication to preserving and furthering the sport was a great gift. It is so important that we try to bring others into the coaching fold to help mitigate this sudden, deep loss of knowledge.

Wishing peace and healing towards everyone who needs it at this time.

The Russian internet is full of grief for the victims. In times like these, we realize that we are all one big family, and such tragedies affect everyone. It is very sad that so many young and talented skaters and talented coaches have died. It is a very big loss.
