So-Youn Park

I really love her long program. And I can see some Yuna in the beginning and ending.

But that sit spin combination has to simply go. I think she was probably better with flying camel even though it was unpredictable as it was. Could she perhaps throw in Canonball spin in that combination if it can get her back low enough? Those Level 1 sit spins in LP and SP are really hurting her score. :ohwell:

^^ I still could not figure out what exactly costed her Level V fly sit in both her sp and fs. level V means, critical feature is not achieved in that type of spin which is a fly sit spin. I listed possible reasons to cost her levels, but why level V.

One reason some fans dont like her FS as much is that some choreo has no exact music reference/purpose. seems pretty random. I sorta has similar feeling at some parts. Most parts choreo is musically spot on. Wish she can get into her program more and figure out those places.

she is so beautiful and i love the programs and physically she looks ready for the season ! if only she could realise she can do it, as many mentioned what she lacks is competetive fire, "i can do it, i will do it" attitude, both her 3S and 2A seemed ok to me to add 3T but once she hesitates she loses her chance, she has to go for it, i hope she will because her jump quality is amazing, and ahh her spins :hopelessness: :slink:

I think someone posted earlier but I think she did not want to risk zayaking 2T, costing her substantial amount of points.

Yes but what i am saying is her landing and flow at 3S and 2A seemed good enough to add 3T, you can see her hesitation ; i dont know, even if she didnt risk it she still could have add 2Lo after 2nd 2A and avoided zayaking , obviously she knows herself better , its just frustrating because she has so much potential

Matmuh, I completely understand your frustration. She is 100% capable of tacking a 3toe to both her 3s and 2a and should not hesitate. She needs to go for everything no matter what (it doesn't matter if she thinks she might fall, it's definitely better to get the 3toe rotated and fall than not to do it at all...). It appears that she is a perfectionist and would not go for the second triple jump if she feels the first jump is a little bit iffy.

So Youn! Stop holding back and just go for everything! You're capable of landing the triple combos even if the landing of the first jump isn't perfect. You need to take risks to move up!

SY really needs a confidence boost. She's so vulnerable, mentally, and I wish she had a mentor who can help her cope with that.

Yeah, she definitely needs more confidence. It is holding her back so much. She can become a 130+ FS skater if she can just get head together and kill all the elements.

She needs the killer instinct, and I hope she develops it this season.

For me, I wish she still went for the combination after double axel. It wasn't like she was going to medal without it, so might as well have gone down trying. :/

Sometimes I do wonder if we expect too much from her. But then again from aesthetic POV, without taking considering the scoring system in mind, she really is a joy to watch.

That's the story of pretty much every competition she has been in...she plays it too safe for no reason.
she has it but she's ....ergggg
everyone is rooting for her. oh, and that FS is amazing.

Hence why I stepped down from my uber fan pedestal and see her at a plane of lower expectations. In fact, I may have set my expectations too low. And yeah I find her much enjoyable to watch...if I don't think about her score.

^^I am still at the same fan pedestal level as ever, actually a bit higher now, just don't care about her scores anymore.

I noticed that when I saw your profile pic but she wasn't in your top 6 for SA.

I actually forgot that Julia is also competing there too so I had to change it. Gonna have to sacrifice my wish for her to get a higher placement to get more prediction points

I recommend anyone who enjoyed the FS to check out the Red Violin film. There are reasons why I sort of see it as her Kiss of the Vampire type of transitioning program...a little biographical, don't want to give the story away, but if you see the film, you can perhaps gather similar ironic meta references in the context of her career. Whether circumstantial or accidental, it does add something extra to the work.

One thing for sure... these pair of programs are really pushing the judges to pay attention to reward her PCS, arguably more than majority of the COP programs today. Hopefully it makes her relatively lower PCS harder to ignore.

I was watching her FS again and when she and her coach were waiting for the scores in the kiss and cry, I tried listening to their conversation. At about 7:09, Coach Chi was asking about the 2A and So Youn said that she was going to put the 3T at the end but her body didn't seem to move along with her (you can see the gesture at 7:11) so she decided to just not do it.

Looking at that 1st 2A again it did seem like if she tried going for the 3T she may have doubled it, which would have been fine...if she hadn't doubled the 3T in the first combo. But yeah, it could have something to do with confidence like many people here said. So Youn has so much potential but it seems like she is trying to take it easy at most times.

I do wonder if she also practices other layouts or combos at the least

But hey, she didn't Zayak herself :hopelessness:

Yeah. I'm glad that she didn't zayak but the landing for the second 2a looked to be perfect for a triple toe. She should have gone for it.

At this point in career, she needs to stop playing safe. She needs to go for it all the way like Rika who never fully rotates the 3f-3t but managed to try it. If she decides to go safe, there will never be big progress. I really hope she's aware of this or someone is telling her this.

I still have high expectations for her because she's sooooooo talented. If she were a weak skater, I would be happy for her 108 FS, but this girl has the potential to score 125 when clean and even over 130 once she gets recognition from the judges.

Btw, the free skate for Skate America is October 24th, which is So Youn's birthday. I hope she gives a gift to herself by skating a clean program!

THIS is basically what I feel too. As much as I'm not a fan of Adelina (and I hold no secret to it) atleast she knew how to capitalise the moment and know that she belonged up there (again! Don't agree with the results). I wish Soyoun could do the same too. The Components until Pyeongchang might be incremental each year so I'm not worried in that regards and to be frank I see her more like Costner who's probably going to have to go through many ups and downs to get to a peak of her career since her confidence doesn't seem to be one of what Dick Button refers to as "chutzpah". So I really have higher hopes for her after Pyeongchang if she continues to do well and continues to skate.

And although I do want her to go for it, I think she probably knows her body better than anyone else, or atleast that's what I'd like to think. And I hope this contributes to her not forcing too much and getting an injury.

I just hope she gets into top 5s consistently in GPs and 4CC to the very least and atleast back to top 10 Worlds this time.
