Sota Yamamoto

Akiko did his sp last year, I thought that was great too?

oops, I thought both of his last season's programs were Miyamoto's work :o Ok, I take back my words, because his Anthem SP was beautiful. The FP was Miyamoto tough, right?

- Sota's new short program from 'Heroes and Future' (not really HD, be warned), and the opening (or closing?) lap where Sota and Kazuki greet the audience holding hands:

Love the first one with Kazuki! They seem to be really having fun. And interesting choice of costume pants, as seen on image 3 - no wonder the blogger is reminded of tights, lol. I wonder if there are going to be any costume adjustments before the season begins. :D Some folks are reminded of Yuzuru's 'Dory' costume because of the white 'wings' ruffle, but I can't really see much of a similarity. From last season on, Sota knows how to rock shoulder ruffles and make them his own.

- the TV commentator said the choreo for 'Air' was done by Kenji Miyamoto

- Any ideas where Sota might be sent in the autumn? I'm busy knocking on wood here that he's healthy in the first place - but I've been wondering. Asian Open seems to early (beginning of August), and apparently Sota said in the latest interview that he's doing exercise to be able to jump 3A and quads so he's not doing them yet. Not having a 3A yet also means little chance of him appearing in the US and Canada I take it, and probably no chance for the NHK spot (fine by me, health comes first). Now, the question is whether he needs to do Chubu Block this year to qualify for Western Sectionals, as he's currently somewhere around #145 in the World standings I think. If he does Chubu (he well might, as it's held at his home rink in Howa), he won't be able to do Nebelhorn and Finlandia because they practically overlap with Chubu. OTOH, the Fed might want to test his progress earlier than, say, November, so that leaves only Lombardia and Nepela from the Challenger series. Very curious if my calculations prove correct come new season.

I see what you mean... we have a very clear picture of Sota's booty :agree: The costume is nice, I like the ruffle.

Keeping fingers crossed that we'll see him at least one of the Challenger series events.

Hmmm... will he be skating soon? I really miss his skating as well. But I do hope he takes his time to heal that nasty injury.

He has been doing ice shows. I think he fell on one of his jumps at Heroes and Future a couple weeks ago. He will probably be scheduled for some challenger series competitions. No gp events assigned unless he is added to NHK. Here is clip from Heroes and Future: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxqYHtIbbCs

Sota's Asian Open assignment from a European fan's PoV:

The pros
- We're going to see him next week
- We're going to learn what his free program is
- Such an early assignment must mean he's healthy :hap10:, and may mean that his jumps are in a competition-ready condition*
- It might be the easiest field of the challengers, and thus a great opportunity for Sota to rack points
- Thailand is close, which means no massive jetlag
- He's going there with Mitsuki who he seems friendly with- https://stat.ameba.jp/user_images/20160829/17/kmn-psn/1b/8d/p/o0453021313735239598.png?caw=800
- Patience is a virtue, and I can practice it for the next 3+ months, hoping for a European assignment
* it would be foolish to expect 3As though, I'm hoping for a 3Lz-2T at best

The cons :disagree:
- Won't have a chance to see Sota live for 3+ months. Will be anguished as if he gets injured in the meantime, I might never see him skate live. Yes, I'm a worrier.
- I hope it's not too early for him. We don't need any more stress fractures, thank you.
- I'll also spend my upcoming months worrying he might get Tallinn which would be :hpull: as it overlaps with the only available date for my N5 exam.

^ hmm, I'd rather he got a later assignment just to give him more time to rest, but if they think he's ready, then I guess he must be. I have no choice but trust they chose the smartest strategy they could. It seems the Fed still has faith in Sota so they have to know what they're doing and why.
I'm hoping he keeps Jekyll and Hyde for his FP...

Sota arrived in Bangkok today, and he's to compete in the SP on Saturday (20.25-21.00 Thai time), and in the FP on Sunday. I guess we won't know his FP music until his FP starts, or until a fan recognizes the music in the practice and posts about it online. A lucky fan went to meet Sota at the airport and got a picture: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Djl0hujU4AAgfKx.jpg Apparently they asked him if he'd been to Thailand before, and he said no, this is his first time. There was also a note about eating Thai food and having fun, but no idea if it refers to Sota or the poster themself.

Anyway, this is going to be Sota's second time competing at Asian Open. He was 2nd in his category (advanced novice) in 2012 Asian Open in Taipei, and you can find the video of his FP to 'Bruce Lee Story' in the OP, and well as this interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5b33b6kRNI ( <- reposting the link because it's too cute). He lost to JunHwan there, and was a bit miffed about it, saying he'd wanted to win (but praised the audience).

Programs announcement: https://twitter.com/Sota_Y_Fanpage/status/1025384300718383104 - his FS is Nobunaga Concerto and we already knew about his SP.

He's really come far in this past year, huh... seeing the 3A does make me worry a little to be honest, but I'm sure it's going well in practice if he's considering bringing it to competition. But still. A little bit of worry, it was never his strongest jump.

Good luck!! :luv17::luv17:

Oh no, here comes the dreaded jump. I hope he reconsiders, his poor ankle, and I'd prefer seeing a clean performance. Please don't get hurt performing that program, Sota, just enjoy yourself.

The 3A makes me nervous. Ooh, that ankle!...Another costume with the little wings / cape. Oh dear -- has to be this year's fad. Please Satomi, don't do it!

Sota came in 6th place after sp. Judge 3 gave low marks in components http://www.fsatresults.com/ISUchallenger/Scores/CSTHA2018_Men_SP_Scores.pdf

No polite words to describe this. He's one of the most artistic skaters I've ever seen, that person should be asamed of themself. Well, the panel did look ominous to me earlier, though it was mostly the tech panel. Three Australians, one Korean, one Japanese across the entire board, if I recall correctly. Humph. Anyway, I didn't have time to watch yet, but from the low score - almost 12 points lower than his clean and underrated skate at Coupe du Printemps - I suppose Sota splat himself, maybe messed up a combo landing, and maybe got low spin levels. I just knew going for the 3A was unnecesary stress for him at this point. I'll go look and see if I was correct. Fingers crossed for his FS tomorrow. Please be healthy and be clean...

He only had 2A and some shaky landings today. Not sure the 2A was a pop or he was unsure to go for 3A. But his PCS is a high crime if you ask me. Apart from jumps he was a head over the rest for me. At least I watch it on TV but geez they talked over everythings even the scores. :disapp:
