Sota Yamamoto

Sota is performing in the Prince Ice World show in Yokohama these days. He performed 'You're Beautiful' by James Blunt, choreographed by Akiko Suzuki. I have read it's his new gala program. If anyone who speaks Japanese wants to read a full report, this blog features one: https://ameblo.jp/shelley39

Also, he appears to be wearing a new brand of skates? They can be seen here: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D5JvNobUwAAwkns.jpg Does anyone know what these ones with holes in them are? Edea?

NOOOOOO I hate this song!!! It was ubiquitous in the UK a while ago...
But I would watch it because of Sota...

^ haha, same here :D I don't like the song either, unless it's some cover version, preferably voiceless. :P I am surprised Sota chose it, as so far his taste in music has been impeccable IMO. Eek, what if he really listened to those folk who keep advising him to change and show a new side of himself? :o Anyhow, I'd suffer this sugary boredom just to see Sota's performance. I don't think we need to worry about that though - they are sometimes very strict about copyright with some summer shows, so if there's a lasting video, my bet would be on one copy on Dailymotion. Just like with last year's Heroes and Future.

I see, thanks!
Has anyone else read on Twitter that Sota will be receiving choreography abroad, or is that just a mistake by google translate?

According to this blog report Sota's new blades are John Wilson Pattern 99 Revolution.
https://ameblo.jp/kmn-psn/entry-12457339318.html

John Wilsonの「パターン99」から、「パターン99レボリューション」に替えたみたい。
Looks like he replaced his John Wilson "Pattern 99" blades with "Pattern 99 Revolution."

軽くて丈夫なので、4回転ジャンパー向きだそうです。
They are lightweight and sturdy and great for quad jumpers.

草太くんはシルバー、隣の刑事くんは黒ですね。
Sota's blades are in gray and Keiji's are in black.

Thanks for your correction, rRainbow! Yeah, the pic in that blog shows that clearly.
Should have checked more before assuming from just one angle pic!:dumb:

Thanks for the info, Tsurara. You were just guessing and I don't blame you for thinking of other model as I could not tell the difference. I just quoted a fan blog which I stumbled upon.

I finally found what you were referring to:
https://twitter.com/hachinohe14/status/1122844429386047489/photo/1

I am guessing that this Sota fan had a brief chat with him at PIW Yokohama and he said that he would get choreography overseas for both LP and SP next season. Since this is not officially confirmed it is still a speculation and even if it is true he might change his mind later. I am afraid that going overseas for choreography sessions is not an easy process and with his B category JSF support status he probably cannot expect JSF's full support and coordination help. He may be on his own contacting overseas choreographer and pays for the huge expenses such as travel expenses, accommodations, etc., in addition to big choreography fees and lessons. Also, he will need interpreter/translator because he struggles with English. My understanding is that the specially supported skaters, on the other hand, get full support getting foreign choreographers and arrangements are done by JSF and all expenses including the costs of accompanying Japanese coaches are paid by JSF. I am just speculating so I may be wrong.

Oh, it's the last photo by gettyimages in the blog, that shows the carbon composite parts (Keiji's are black and Sota's are silver in the zoomed up photo), while Kozuka blades are carved out of a whole ingot steel with no welded joints. Also the shape of the joint parts at the heel has a distinctive shape.

Regarding choreo, girl skaters often get a foreign choreographer for their program no matter their rank, so why not Sota too? lol (Like Marin Honda/None got Lori Nicole, Yuna Shiraiwa/A got Benoir Richaud, and Yuna Aoki/B and Tomoe Kawabata/A were in Champery camp so they might have theirs by Stephane Lambiel or Salome Brunner... You don't have to have S to hire a foreign choreographer, I think! although foreign choreo does not necessarily mean good.) It probably costs a lot, though, and I'm not really sure how much the fund covers for JSF skaters.
Thank you for finding out where the rumor came from!

You are right about overseas choreography, Tsurara. I was skeptical before but I just heard through the grapevine that Sota is going overseas for choreography in May. But don't quote me on that as it is not officially confirmed yet and it is just a rumor at this moment.

I agree with you that foreign choreographers do not always offer better quality or better fit for the skaters/programs than domestic ones, and yet overseas choreography costs an arm and a leg for sure. We will see how it goes. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Translation of an excerpt from the interview with Sota on “Figure Skating Life vol. 17” published on March 22, 2019.
The interview was done in January, 2019. Many thanks to this Sota fan blog.

■NHK Trophy Back Story
- Did you cut your hand doing a doughnut spin?
Yes, I must have cut myself with a sharp edge trying to grab the blade. I did not feel pain at that moment, but I see some swelling.
- Oh, could that be your wound?
Yes, I had some stitches after the competition.
- How many stitches did you have?
No big deal at all. I only had 2, 3 stitches. Then, they told me to visit a nearby hospital to have the stitches removed. But before going there for stitch removal all the stitches came off.
- Whoah!
A-ha-ha-ha [laughing loudly]
- You are laughing [laughs], but how come you did not go to see the doctor?
Well, I thought the wound was somehow closed already, and it was healed and okay. It just so happened that the stitches were gone! [laughs]
- Shouldn’t be more concerned?[laughs]
■ Quads for the first time after 2 years and 10 months
- You said that you started training quad a week ago.
Yes, when I started training triple axel I jumped double axel many times and rotated (one more) and landed a triple on my first try, but a quad was not that easy [laughs]. I kept falling on the quad for a few days.
- How did you feel when you landed a quad (at competition)?
I was too desperate to do the next move to feel anything [laughs]. In run through after landing a quad I had never jumped two axels afterwards so I was frantically trying to do the next jump. I barely landed. That straight line entry to the axel is hard to do, as my entry into an axel is usually curved.
■New Rule
- Do you almost understand the 11 grades of execution? For example this jump will get about this much GOE?
Well, actually I haven’t checked the protocols closely lately [laughs].
- Why? [laughs]
Ummm, I wonder why [laughs]. I want to go over the protocols in more detail from now on, but rather than looking at the protocols, delivering solid performances has been my priority so far.
- How did you feel about 4 minutes program time?
Let me see. In my case I don’t do difficult jumps so 4 minutes is good enough for me.
- But you added a quad, didn’t you?
…I somehow compare my physical condition this year with one last year, and I felt that I was more exhausted last year. Now I don’t run out of stamina at the end of the 4-minute program.
■ College Life
Not good at all…...
- You’re struggling [laughs].
The same as before [laughs].
- Did you get your driver’s license?
Yes, I did!
- Congratulations.
Thank you very much. But I don’t drive because I don’t have a car [laughs].
- So right after you got your driver’s license you quit driving.
Hehe, that’s right.
- Do you feel it would be nice to drive?
I don’t know about that. I will continue to go home by train after practice and I don’t feel like driving a car. I am so tired after practice.
- It might be a good idea to go home by train. Well, good luck with your study and skating.

Translation
Sota: I gained weight so I was a bit worried, but my body fat percentage went down while I gained muscle. I think I have grown steadily and I’m getting into better shape.

I feel that mentally I am getting back on track little by little, or rather a little more motivated or driven than before. In a positive way what went away have come back to me, so next season I would like to work hard to get better results, making the most of what I have.

Thank you for your contributions, Rainbow!
Sota is now #43 in the updated world rankings. Good job, Sota!
I did notice his torso looked sturdier in the show photos than ever before (if such a thing can be said of someone so slim). Does he ever mention his foot anymore? I hope it's not giving him trouble, with his increased weight.
I wonder why school is giving him so much trouble when he studies sports science. Maybe it's the languages ;)

Generally speaking, 1st year students in Japanese universities/colleges need quite a number of general subject credits, including English and another language (in his case, Chinese), ofc. :agree: Chukyo is no exception, according to their homepage.
That said, I think the reason why he's having trouble is, more like, only because he's actually trying to do well. (You know, how some students in Japan don't take it too seriously and don't care how bad they do - as long as they can graduate.)

Here’s an excerpt from the old Sota interview in 2018 about athlete check. One year ago he said he was lacking in stamina.
Translation:
◆Athlete Check Interview◆
From ”Figure Skating Next 2” published in July, 2018
https://ameblo.jp/kmn-psn/entry-12458788218.html

Sota: Compared to last year my test scores are higher and these scores will help me make a plan from now on. I will try my best. People told me my jumps were great but all other things I did came out average. I have done jumps on the ground sometimes and that must have helped improve my jump score. My jumps (on the ice) haven’t changed much and I jump triples more or less,
I just told everybody that my legs were a little tired, but they responded like “Really?” so it looks like I need to build more muscles. In terms of stamina I don’t feel I’ve got my strength back yet to skate through the program without losing steam, and I need to work on it.

(This season) during the whole time I felt like my skate was just good enough to be back in the game and I don’t have a real sense of accomplishment. I will be satisfied if I get results at competitions, and in order to achieve that I have to bring up the level of my skate.

I see, thanks for your explanations and translations. Well, if he still has the 'I don't read textbooks' mindset, I understand his critical assessment of his prowess. :D

Can anyone be as kind as to fish out what it was that Nathan said of Sota several months ago? I recall reading he'd said some supportive words in a magazine (I forgot which one) interview. I think it was mentioned in one of the past articles in the blog you linked, Rainbow. Surely that one quote is not relevant now several months later, and could be shared with us who don't have the magazine? I'd love to read how a star like Nathan is supportive of a little-known returning skater, even if it were just a single sentence. <3

If what you meant is this blog page, the mentioned article is published online. (Originally from a book titled "Little Wings")

Hasn't someone already translated it in Nathan's fan fes thread? I think I saw it, but not sure, and don't have enough time to dig it in that long thread lol

Nathan is now a super star, but I remember they used to be rivals (or maybe it's a bit in Japanese favorite light), though Nathan had higher reputations, iirc.

Thanks, Tsurara,, for the info.

Now some more old stuff. This blog article shows various skaters’ comments after 2017 Athlete Check.

Translation of Sota part: (Looks like he had his mind on his recovery; he kept focused on the present and the future.)

●Sota Yamamoto
Last time I took the test was two years ago and I’m glad that my scores are much higher now. I haven’t been able to be on the ice very much. The exercise I am allowed to do is still limited so I don’t feel at ease, and I basically follow rehab program for now. I want to do what I can do step by step. Recently I started training by myself and it probably helped improve my scores. I want to keep training what I am allowed to do. I am not supposed to do any jumps yet so I train on the mat to strengthen my ankles and core muscles.
This time I had fun together with everybody and feeling refreshed. I don’t know yet when I can come back to the competition.

Thanks to Tsurara I read this online Nathan interview dated Nov. 23, 2018 which the blogger mentioned.
https://courrier.jp/news/archives/144304/
I tried to find the English version on Nathan thread but there are so many pages and I gave up searching. Here’s my translation of Sota part which is after Nathan’s comment on Marin Honda.

“I remember Sota (山本草太選手) very well of course. He was really impressive….. I heard he came back to the international competitions! He and I used to compete with each other many times since we were little, and I am proud of it.

I went through many injuries and surgeries myself but these do not last a lifetime. If you get treated properly you will get better for sure and be physically stronger.

I want him to strongly believe that he is now heading in the right direction. By believing this his physical injury will also heal. Having gone through injuries Sota must be stronger than before his injuries.”
