Stars On Ice 2018 Tour - US

gosh ;) you guys are intense :)
just to send you some chilly air from up north..

our SOI got announced... and the cast is also incomplete but WOW.. what a cast ;) it has everything a Canadian skating fan is wishing for....
VM Weapo, Gabby, Kaetlyn, Patrick, D/R, Elvis and in some cities Buttle.

so I went to check out the US SOI and I have to say that in comparison, it's lackluster... now... i know that they will add people but here is the thing in marketing 101 :

you often only have one chance to sell something so you better be ready when you announce something ...

At this point, I understand why some of you here are not thrilled with the cast. It's like SOI on a diet and on a post Olympic year.. .wow..

In this case, SOI USA should have waited after Nationals to make its announcement....

YYMV

We pre-ordered our tickets for Hershey, PA (2 hours away), and now we see that there will be a show in Allentown, PA the night before (one hour away). So, Hershey it will be for this season.

Noskates, can you drop a hint to your family to attend SOI on Mothers' Day for part of your Mothers' Day celebration?

4everchan, as much as I  & support our US skaters, I wish we had a mix with the Canadian skaters, too! Plus Javi!

Maia Shibutani has 100k followers on insta and Alex has 75k. I'm sure there are plenty of people who want to see them. :)

Mrs. P, How is it that you missed it? :disapp: :p, Alex already reached 103,000 followers, and Maia 122,000 .

Ha, I am working off OLD numbers, clearly.

Well more people to go to SOI.

I want another IG of Arden Cho at SOI!

I want to be near Seattle too!!!:scowl::drama::laugh:

Time to look at plane tickets? ;)

Sad that once again there are no Missouri stops. I am trying to talk my hubby into taking me to the show in Milwaukee (I am bribing him with promises of good beer and cheese curds). Chicago would be a bit closer but it is on a Sunday night. I really hope they add Madison and Zach to the show, they can use the money and they had so much fun on tour last spring.

just bought SOI Montreal ;)

Family is not into figure skating. Now if it was a rugby match it would be different.

I don't understand the meanness being directed at SOI. If you don't like the cast - don't go. But don't ruin it for the rest of us with sarcasm and spiteful diatribe. It's the only touring figure skating show we have right now and we should try to support it before it goes away like the World Figure Skating Tour did. I've been going to SOI since its inception and haven't always liked a skater or two that seemed to hang around forever. But it's always a good show no matter who is skating. The choreography and costumes and the music are delightful no matter who is skating.

Umm. I am trying and failing to understand why anyone would care how/when information on the US SOI cast is announced, to the point they would criticize the current cast list as “pathetic” or “lackluster” - especially given that more skaters are to be announced “soon.”

The fact that Canadian SOI has already announced a full, star-studded cast list is great for people planning to attend those shows, but I can’t see how it’s relevant here, or why SOI USA should wait until after Nationals to announce the full cast.

As to the idea that Jason shouldn’t have been announced “early” because he “only” won one silver medal on the GP versus Adam’s two, and he was “only” first alternate for the GPF, while Adam qualified fifth out of sixth places, c’mon. Even if you strongly prefer Adam and are personally convinced that Jason is overrated, objectively speaking the difference in their seasons to date is not that great, and both are contenders for the Olympic team. And frankly speaking, what’s really important at this point is whether one or both of them make that team - not whether one was named to the SOI cast before the other. JMO.

i think you missed my main point

in this crazy virtual online shopping world... on a post olympic tour, Stars on Ice US made a mistake of announcing too early. If they had announced with only a couple more skaters, whoever they may be, they would have appealed to everyone. I personally didn't say anything about Jason vs Adam. But would I pay good money to see a show with only 6 confirmed stars, some of which are not skating well this year (not talking Jason again) or some of which from the previous quad (D and W)....

Marketing-wise, it's not a good move so that was why I commented...it brings suspicions about who hasn't signed, who is a first choice, who is what or not... not good policy.

They tried to get in for the holiday season, with a partial announcement... and that strategy may backfire as we see some people not happy about it...

SOI probably announced it early because they have an SOI show in Lake Placid coming up on Dec. 30, so just wanted to put it in line with that show and take advantage of a captive audience who might want to go ahead and buy for the spring tour.

And yes, an announcement ahead of the holidays is not a bad idea given how people tend to be more willing to spend their discretionary dollars. And honestly, more notice is probably good given how jam packed people's schedules get.

So who wants to meet solar and I for SOI and Din Tai Fung in Seattle? (And Salt and Straw will probably be open in Seattle by then, so let's throw that in for a post SOI treat, LOL)

Believe what you want to believe. I'm just glad I'm not drinking the campy koolaid. YMMV.

We have gone from announcing SOI to full-on criticism of Jason, and Jason’s fans. I don’t get it. :scratch2:

But I am way too old and cynical to have drunken anyone’s KoolAid... and since I’m not sure there any agreement of this matter, I think we can agree to move on....:bed:

I've moved on but everyone wants to keep criticizing those of us with a different opinion than theirs that's been doing this a long time. The kool aid comment had nothing to do with Jason or his specific fans but if you want to keep skewing my words then believe what you want.

Agree to disagree without further criticism and move on. I am glad you get to see Jason in your town. :)

@iluvtodd, is there any way you can switch shows? It would be great to see you again at the rink?:) And it’s a new arena. And restaurants within walking distance....

And I would love to see some Canadian skaters as well. But this is initial cast is great, inducing me to buy tickets, and I look forward to the additions:agree:

I'm harbouring a quiet hope that perhaps Joshua might return to SOI. It could be a nice lead in to his comeback.

And I'd like to see Max get named ...

:agree: And then the jam sessions of the SOI "boy band" could be revived :dance2:.

The instrumental and voice talents of Nathan and Jason would be excellent additions . Adam too.

ETA:
Oops, I forgot that Charlie (and his violin ) should be in the band as well.
Dunno whether Alex sings and/or plays an instrument?

Did someone say Din Tai Fung?! :hap85:

Wish I could join you. And I would be happy to wash the yummy :luv17: dumplings down with any skater's Kool-Aid ;) ... whether Adam's or Jason's or anyone else's.

ETA:

Forgot to mention that Simon and Marissa were SOI cast members for the 2014 post-Olympic tour.

So it does not seem unthinkable to me that a pair would be included in the 2018 edition. Will keep my fingers crossed.

I know you didn’t say anything about Jason. I was addressing two separate things in the the same post - sorry if that was unclear. As to the marketing thing - people may well wait a couple of months to buy tickets until the full cast is announced, but since the first shows aren’t until April, I don’t really see it as an issue. I probably won’t go myself, but only because the SOI format doesn’t really appeal to me - I much prefer competitions and / or shows like those produced by American Ice Theater and Ice Theater of New York.

Lackluster? That's harsh. Even the partial cast is plenty luster to me and to many, many people. :) You might not understand it, for instance, but at SA the audience went ga-ga for Ashley. And it goes without saying that audiences everywhere adore Jason. Nathan's presence could conceivably attract new audience members, this year. But of course, everyone in a cast will not be everyone's favorite. That's the beauty of figure skating: something for everyone.

Actually, there are only one or possibly two currently listed for the Canadian show that I'd be interested enough to be there for. YMMV. Now, if Kurt Browning were skating ....

Well...nothing nearby me even though it’s an Olympic year.

I *could* shoot for the Long Island show - looks like the closest stop easily accessible via mass transit - but that’s not a day trip and no inexpensive local spots to spend the night.

Hmm...and now that I look at the cast...with all due respect to them, most of whom I’ve had the privilege of enjoying in the past - not sure it is worth it. :confused2: I’ll see who else they add.

I'm so frustrated that yet once again there's no Washington DC stop. Not even Baltimore. I could drive to Hershey, but that's 2.5 hours away and I'd have to take the day off. I don't know why they never come to DC ...
