Stars On Ice 2018 Tour - US

I could be wrong - and I'm sure someone will point that out because they've been doing this for so long - but the SOI cast is always announced around this time because they do start out in Lake Placid, it's generally televised there and generally aired early in the year.

Whatever. There will be more cast members announced.

And if Kurt Browning was in the CAN SOI cast I might just fly up there to see him again.

Ha, I am working off OLD numbers, clearly.

Well more people to go to SOI.

I want another IG of Arden Cho at SOI!

Time to look at plane tickets? ;)

yeah, right:cool14:

probably won't happen to my despair since I'm planning Milan Worlds in March and save money as much as I can to be at all events...besides - I cannot imagine myself right now to fly across Atlantic, at the same time wanting to be in US one day (near SEattle ofc and meet You and other GSers);)

I'm so frustrated that yet once again there's no Washington DC stop. Not even Baltimore. I could drive to Hershey, but that's 2.5 hours away and I'd have to take the day off. I don't know why they never come to DC ...

They used to. Inquire with the Verizon Center their reasoning for not adding the show in.

Lackluster? That's harsh. Even the partial cast is plenty luster to me and to many, many people. :) You might not understand it, for instance, but at SA the audience went ga-ga for Ashley. And it goes without saying that audiences everywhere adore Jason. Nathan's presence could conceivably attract new audience members, this year. But of course, everyone in a cast will not be everyone's favorite. That's the beauty of figure skating: something for everyone.

Actually, there are only one or possibly two currently listed for the Canadian show that I'd be interested enough to be there for. YMMV. Now, if Kurt Browning were skating ....

sure it's a question of taste.. but i also went with a question of olympic medals and world championship medals.

Nathan, Karen, Jason, that's half of the cast aren't decorated athletes. Us fans, crazy figure skating fans, who spend time on figure skating forums and watching streaming at wee hours of the morning may not care, but the greater public, reacts to words like world champion and olympic medalist. And of course, I know you don't like Canadian skaters, i have read enough of your posts regarding on that topic ;)

YMMV I will be escaping this thread, i only came to mention one point : the SOI Canada tour announced a much more elaborate format which is enticed me to purchase right away at presales....in opposition to the US tour, which is my opinion missed the mark on a marketing opportunity in an Olympic year..... and why did I mention this, because I could understand why some people weren't happy in this thread and their voices were shut because a couple users are thrilled already because their faves are there....

I have never been to SOI... I love figure skating as a competitive sport... I was bored at the Gala at Nationals last year... however, I am going for two reasons

1) the tour often skips my city and last year I wrote a formal complaint about that... and well they are coming this year
2) this is a chance to see all the athletes who have gone to the Olympics just before they retire.... so even if they do less exciting jumps, they will still be in the shape of their lifes... and if they have done well (or not), it will be emotional.

but yeah...again time for me to :sling:

Between NBA and NHL games, Capital One (is that what it's called now?) may not have had availability. However, Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore looks wide open for that time. Heck, put it in the Fred Rust Ice Arena at the University of Delaware and I'd go. At 2,500, it might even sell out. :)

Oh, I figured it was that Capitals and NBA games, but I don't think they had great turn out either when they were there. Fred Rust in Delaware is doubtful because they don't play rinks like that.

On the SOI Facebook they said they hope to air the show on TV later in the year. Does anyone remember which performance was filmed in 2014? Anaheim would probably be a good choice, as the crowd was pretty decent for the SOI show this year.

It was a joke. ;). I'm going to be in the area then and would like something closer than Hershey.

They filmed 2014 in one of the Florida venues, Orlando or environs, I think:think: I remember because Jason was one of the skaters they filmed and I’‘m pretty sure that’s where they filmed him.... but I could be misremembering

Just looked at News on the SOI website and they've added Ryan Bradley, Jeremy Abbott and Navarro and Bomentre. The Lake Placid show is the 25th anniversary and will also feature Kristi Yamaguchi and Paul Wiley. I would be very surprised if they don't tape that show for television. I guess Scott Hamilton is still recovering from his latest brain tumor setback.

They are all United States national champions. That is good enough for PR purposes on the U.S. tour.

why take an excerpt from my paragraph? I am referring to worlds and olympic medals.... if all it takes is to be a national champion to make a good cast, then fair enough.

I'm going to the St. Paul show, got my tix today, 7th row.

Hubby and I will be happy to see Jason, Nathan, Ashley and the Shibs. I don't care who else!

(Hubby was never too crazy about going in the past.....until the first Olympian stepped onto the ice (I think it was Alexei Yagudin). Now he is almost as big a fan as me!

You're referring only to the one-night SOI show in Lake Placid, right?

And not to the post-Olympic 2018 SOI tour.

:agree: Agree with MM that for purposes of the pre-sale, "U.S. champion" works just fine for marketing to the greater public.

Plus Jason has an Olympic bronze from the team event. And for the greater public, an Olympic medal prob. is an Olympic medal (whether for team or individual).

Those more knowledgeable than the greater public already will be well aware of Nathan's historic record, of Karen's 4th place at Worlds, of Jason's viral Riverdance, etc.

By the time that SOI ratchets up its marketing after the Olympics, chances are very good that Nathan at the very least will be an Olympian. Hopefully with a team medal. And possibly with an individual medal. (I don't want to jinx him ;) and make a more definitive prediction.) Chances are reasonable that Karen will be an Olympian. Possibly with a team medal.

FWIW: Going back a few years, SOI used to televise highlights from one of the earliest stops on the tour ... partly as a promotion to increase ticket sales for upcoming stops on the tour.

All their recent Olympic and world medalist are there, apart from Gold (for obvious reasons). I'm sure that their "haste" to advertise the event without waiting for the Olympics or even Nationals has much to do with the Christmas period...now, if you have a kid, a relative of a friend who is a fan/might be interested a ticket can be a good gift option, don't you think?
Besides, if you look at recent events in Japan (the country with the best audience and attendance at the moment and probably the best paychecks) you can see that having a world or Olympic medal can be one of the reasons why you get invited there but is not the only one...other factors may appeal most than a medal when it comes to choose the performing cast.

that's not my point. my point as someone who has done marketing for over 10 years is that the "cast" is made to appear weak and incomplete.. and in an Olympic year it's a missed opportunity. For instance, forget the "national champion" for Jason and put Sochi Olympic Bronze Medalist. what is more powerful? Or simply put 3 skaters ... including Davis and White and say : SOI will feature our Olympians. That would have been better. Right now, it says very little.. IMHO

Does that wink emoji mean you're joking? Because I love Weaver/Poje, Keegan Messing, Nic Nadeau (new to me this year), and Gabby Daleman. Liam Firus gets honorable mention for his LLLand FS.

I'm interested in your remark about the new format. I like the group performances, but I get frustrated when I can't watch everyone at once, so I like the smaller group numbers. One of my all time favorites was a duet by Sasha Cohen and Alissa Czisny. I also liked a skate by Adam, Jeremy, and (?)can't remember last year. Choreographed by Jeffey Buttle.

I enjoy the competitions more, but SOI does have its charms.

Was it the Sound of Silence with Ryan, Adam and Jeremy from 2016 tour?
