State of Russian Men's Figure Skating 2015-2016

Adian is going to come back from this injury and be the most well rounded Russian but also with a chip on his shoulder. I hope he can show the judges his true potential next season!!!

Maybe. I like him. But I see also that it is not easy to perform for him whereas Kolyada is a born performer it just comes naturally to him. His jumping ability is also a way better than Adian's - effortless elevation & textbook technique.

And newsflash, no Russian man (current or past) could best Hanyu (when he's on) for World gold. There simply hasn't been a Russian man in the CoP era with the ideal balance of technical skills and artistry that would even come close to beating Hanyu. There are few men in general who could compete with him.

If there were Russian men who could legitimately challenge Hanyu and were being held back then you might have a point, but Kovtun is clearly the best they've got. Voronov lost 2015 Russians by a hair but did errors (and 2015 Worlds proved that in the biggest event of the season Kovtun was the best Russian), and no way would Kolyada have won Russian Nats this year given his SP errors, Kovtun's higher base value, and Kolyada being still a relative "junior-turned-senior" on the scene. And it's not like by Kovtun winning Nats he's denying Voronov (in 2015) and Kolyada (in 2016) opportunities. Like I said, if they want to be Russian #1 they need to prove that they are worthy - Kovtun isn't going to simply step aside, and certainly not when he's technically the strongest Russian on paper. And you might think he gives zero performance but that's just your opinion -- clearly the Russian and international judges think otherwise, and their opinion is the one Kovtun actually gives a damn about.

On paper with five quads planned is usually the only place kovtun is best. He wasnt the best when he beat voronov in 2015 or kolyada in 2016. Kovtun does not always deserve to win russian nationals. You say he should win russian nationals no matter how he skates because he has won gp events which puts him above all the other russian men. I totally disagree. The other russian men deserve the chances that come with having the title. Russian fed is choosing not to dilute their kovtun lobbying by always having him be the champion. If kovtun and no Russian man ever can beat hanyu why hold anyone up? Why not have a free for all at russian nationals and this closed door only kovtun can win environment. That's bad for all.

What "chances" that come with having the Russian national title have the other guys (Voronov, Kolyada) missed out on - they went to Euros and Worlds (Voronov in 2015, Kolyada in 2016). Kovtun winning didn't deny them Grand Prix competitions or anything.

And going by your logic, then Kovtun - having the Russian title in 2014 - shouldn't have missed out on the biggest "chance"... going to Sochi. Unless you think Kovtun being Russian champion and being denied that chance (a chance which Plushenko had already had twice, including already a gold, mind you) was negligible in that situation. :sarcasm: #doublestandard

One thing is certain though... The state is rather not nice as people keep dragging poor plushy around nonstop.

In my opinion it is not a good idea to announce the Worlds team so late. There is a big difference if one is training because she/he is a team member or if one just trains in case one might get selected.

I suspect that "unofficially" most of the people who are going to Worlds already know so and have known so for a long time (since Euros, most likely). So it shouldn't make a huge difference in training.

I couldn't agree more, uncertainty is never good. But I guess the situation with the pairs has been tricky so it is understandable for the fed to delay the final decision. But it could not be easy on Anna & Mikhail.
 
Few updates on the state of Russian men:

1. With Proklova confirming the rumour on her Ask.fm, it seems true that Adian has moved to CSKA (the rumour holds his new coach is Buyanova). I was hoping him to compete at a competition later in the season if he recovers but I didn't see this coming... I guess the good side of the news is that it seems he's back on ice now (well not really sure tbh...) ;)

2. Voronov is assigned for TCC but unfortunately he's injured right now and hoping to get recovered by TCC... :(

Adian Pitkeev has moved to TSKA to train under Elena Vodorezova. Though there was no official announcement yet, his Russian Wiki page lists Eteri as his former coach.
So Maxim & Adian will be training alongside each other like Javi & Yuzuru - very interesting...
What is it - a mass exodus from Eteri's group or just a coincidence? The rumours say that Sergei Voronov is leaving Eteri too (not confirmed)

ETA: Is Buyanova coaching Samarin too (his main coach is Sokolovskaya)? Wikipedia says so :scratch2:

Wikipedia can be updated by literally anyone, it's not a credible source of information unless citations are included.

However both Arthur Werner and Elena Vaitsekhovskaya have confirmed the move so it is very likely true.
 
Hope this years long programs go better than last years for the Russian men leading jr worlds
 
Its more an issue of consistency than talent. No coach currently employed by a Russian man is good at that with male students . These were Epic collapses along with total if ignorance of what gets good pcs in men's
