State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

I'm not closely following the developments happening outside of ladies right now. Who's the frontrunner right now for the Team Event? Canada? Or still Russia?

If the team event was going to be held this week, Canada would win. However, the Olympics are still 9 months away.

Canada had better results across all 4 disciplines at 2013 Worlds though and Russia still won the Olympic team gold a year later.

It's anyone's guess at this point in time.

It'll depend on who's most consistent throughout the season I guess

I agree. I think the resume building started at Nationals or even the GPs last year and they're going to have to keep building from there so they'll have a good 'body of work' come time to choose the team. Of course there's that new loophole about nurturing newcomers who show future potential, or something along those lines, which seems to cover any Polina Edmund type junior skater who might suddenly climb the ranks...

I really hope Karen's boot issues are gone forever, because a consistent Karen + MG = mind blown

If Ashley is #1 or #2 woman, she will choose to do the team event. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. She doesn't over-estimate herself.

The USFSA really needs to have a transparent selection process for the team event. Maybe the season's best or highest average SP and LP scores decide that. It worked out last time because we had two clear top women (even though Ashley was 4th at Nationals). This year, I think making the team and having consistently high SP (or LP) scores will be important since there are no frontrunners at this point.

She's not skipping the Team Event lol. It's her only chance at Olympic gold.

I'd think that would be between RUS and CAN (still...). At best the US would be shooting for another bronze.

As for Wagner, I suppose it would depend on the season she has leading up to the event. Unless another US lady has a significant breakthrough over the fall GP, I'd still think USFS would have her on the hotlist for at least one of the SP or FS for Ladies. The bigger question regarding Wagner, though, is whether she'll deliver at Nationals to get on the Oly team in the first place. Would she be placed on the team AGAIN if she ends up 4th?

^^^ Didn't you ask that question just a few pages ago? If not you, someone. I'm not even taking part in the conversation, but I remember it. Circles, circles ....

Agreed. In fact, I think most rational people can agree that USFS will not put anyone on a team over anyone else without significantly better international results during the current season. Would Ashley be put on the Olympic team after a 4th place at Nationals? Sure, if she wins a GPF medal again.

My guess is that the top 2 in each discipline at Nationals will have a shot at the team event. I think Canada is probably the favorite, followed by the USA, and then Russia. I just hope the medals aren't basically locked up by the time the free skate happens. They really should weight the points so there's more suspense.

Canada:
Men- Chan
Ladies- Osmond & Daleman
Pairs- Duhamel/Radford & Lyuba/Dylan
Dance- Virtue/ Moir & Weaver/Poje

USA
Men- Nathan Chen & (maybe Jason Brown or Adam Rippon)
Ladies- Karen Chen & Ashley Wagner (or Gracie if back together by then)
Pairs- Knierim/ Knierim
Dance- Shibs & Chock/Bates

Russia
Men- Kolyada & Kovtun
Ladies- Medvedeva & Zagitova
Pairs- Tarasova/Morozov & Stolbova/Klimov
Dance- Bobrova/Soloviev

I've seen a couple videos posted re: stars on ice. I don't know if its just me, but it definitely looks like Gracie has put on some weight. Should this be a concern considering we're less than a year out from the Olympics or is this not a big deal considering we're in the off season?

Gracie's a big girl; I am not going to worry about it. We have our three spots for the Olympics.

Three face smacks for three spots :) ... Don't know if that was on purpose. But if Gracie comes back guns blazing and can get one of those spots, good for her and good for U.S. figure skating!

I may have taken this wrong but I read you saying 'Gracie's a big girl' as if you were commenting on her weight. If thats the case, then that's not cool and I don't want to go down this road again- I've said what I needed to say on how inappropriate it is to comment on skaters weights. However if you meant it as in she's an adult who doesn't need fans worrying about her then I'm sorry for my reaction.

Gracie slacked off training last season and it cost her. There will be no excuse for her not being ready and fit from day one next season because she has a lot to prove to not just herself but the judges so she better put in the work and get in shape and not do what she did last season.

Agreed. She's also had a longer off-season - no reason why she couldn't have dedicated more time to off-ice training.

She was heavier than her normal all last season. I don't think it's inappropriate to comment on it. When your body is your art, better to do your best to keep it fit. And let's not go down the eating disorder topic. That will just remind me of Nancy claiming she had an eating disorder because the couple of weeks before the Olympics in 1994 she wasn't eating well.... Gag. What a slap in the face to people who actually do deal with an ED. Nancy, being stressed out and training hard for a few weeks before the biggest event of your lifetime causing you to not eat a full plate of roast beef, potatoes, and greens does not an eating disorder make. *eyeroll*
