State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

It seems to me that Polina/her team did not market her in the best way. It is if as they were still present in her as a child rather than a woman. It is too bad, actually.

If Gracie skates the way she did at Golden Skate, I can see others taking her place. Perhaps she will pull it together for next season but right now she seems to feel defeated. I would love to know more what is going on behind the scenes there.

This may be in the wrong thread, but I think Dave is entitled to report gossip. That is what it is, gossip. He is not a full time journalist- or opinionated commentator- and many journalists print gossip and speculation. I understand, though, why others are not pleased.

News outlets report gossip all the time, so I don't see the big deal. I'm also surprised to see people doubting Dave's knowledge of what's going on or assuming that he is simply guessing. Love him or hate him, pretending he DOESN'T have insider info or that any of us are somehow more knowledgable than he is is really just unrealistic.

USFS got it completely wrong. They have gotten it wrong for a long time. Are you reading this USFS? I hope so :):disagree::dumb:

If USFS has gotten it wrong for a long time, then how come after Gold and Wagner finished 6th & 7th at Worlds 2013, the US has been able to send 3 ladies to Worlds, because Gold and Wagner have kept those 3 spots ever since then?

:agree: I totally agree with your sentiment and your conclusion. Wagner and Gold together have done remarkable work and completely deserve their wins and placements at US Nationals. USFS has gotten it right for a long time.

I have only one little detail quibble : Ashley and Gracie came in 5th and 6th, respectively, at Worlds 2013. :)

Gracie is no longer a rookie and as a seasoned veteran, it is now or never. What she can no longer do, is pretend that everything is fine by making these kinds of comments. When I see it on the ice, then and only then will I believe that an "Amazing Comeback" is in the offing.

Nathan Chen won a Silver medal at the GPF. He was 2nd, not 5th. 5th in the short, if that's what you mean, but you said "finished."

I'm not sure that success at Worlds is evidence that Nationals was judged fairly, although I tend to agree with the placements at the US championships.

If I were Polina, I would absolutely take the rest of the season off and enjoy your Freshman year of College. She has so much to look forward to and she could have a golden comeback, just like her coach Rudy Galindo!!! The Planets are aligning and with Nationals being in her hometown she'll have all of her family, and her new college classmates there to cheer for her. Rest your body girl......We'll be here next year.:cheer:

No doubt that Polina is a talented skater; she truly is, and she is one of the best in the world.

But I think she comes off as arrogant in her interviews. It makes it hard to root for her.

I don't think Polina is the least bit arrogant. She reminds me a lot of Sasha Cohen. I always thought Sasha came off as arrogant and jealous of Michelle Kwan. That all changed when I got to watch her in rehearsal for an event here in Fresno. Like me, Sasha was kind of a dork, and I think Polina is a bit less of a dork but, you have to remember that she has basically spent her entire childhood in a rink, or studying for school. I was never a partier, or considered cool by my classmates and imagine it was because I spent so little time on campus. It is simply not possible to train and have a full load of courses by the time a real school day ends. That's why you see these skaters train at 6am and then again from 6pm to 9pm. It's a difficult and very scheduled life.

NOPE. This girl continues to vastly overestimate her own potential relative to others. Everyone deserves to be king/queen in their own head but that doesn't mean he/she should bring his/her delusion into the world for everyone to see.

I bet the closest she comes to competitive ice this season is the ice luge at one of those frat parties she frequents.

You know what - the way everyone else has been skating, she ain't that far off the mark. If both Gold and Wagner underperform, which they have this season - yes, she CAN win. It nearly happened this year...

Having said that, it sounds like she is done for the season.

R.D., if things continue on their current course. It will be Mariah Bell who is looking in her rearview mirror at the rest of the pack. With Polina out, and Ashley struggling, this is the time for Gracie to re-assert herself as the top US Lady. Of course, we all know what a fighter Ashley is and with some much needed rest, she may come back with a vengeance at Nationals. Who knows what will happen with Zhang, Hicks, Wang, Glenn, and the strong Junior Ladies from this season. Time will tell.....By the way, Where has Brandie Tennell been all year?

She said she has a good chance of winning if she skated clean in both SP & LP. That's correct. It's not like her competitors like Medvedeva who rarely misses. They are a bunch of headcases who will make a bunch of mistakes.
It's not like she said she had a good chance of winning if she skated clean regardless of how others do. Some people just fail logic.
