State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

Looking at older clips of Ashley --

Why are her spins in 2012 faster than her spins now? Her build is much thinner in 2012, but it's not like she's all heft now. I'm curious.

At that time, she was coached by John Nicks and Philip Mills. As you know Nicks is known for coaching Sasha and Mills's coaching style is balleric, so I have no wonder about her refinement in spins back then.

Thanks @Andro & @Cross for responding.

I didn't want to come across as body shaming her and I was worried that i'd get jumped on by the "how dare you mention size" trolls.

Now that you've put it into context, I have noticed that her jumps are remarkably better and her spins, spirals, and sadly, transitions, are not as good as they were when she was with Nicks & Millls.

I agree that spins and transitions were better with Nicks and Mills. With Phillip Mills as her choreographer training her daily he probably did not allow her to leave out the transitions. She admits that she tends to drop them as the season goes on (although last year was better)

Ashley readily admits that she hates spins. Over the past couple of years with Raf she clearly she needed to focus on getting consistent 3-3 combos more than she needed to improve spins. So my guess is that the spins went without much attention the past couple of years. But this summer she went to a spin specialist and plans to go back again during the season. I thought a couple of her spins looked a little better at Japan Open.

You're right, they did look better at Japan Open.

I hope they're great at Skate America! I hope to see a clean Ashley AND Gracie at SkAm.

Ashley changed her spin positions in her competitive programs to more difficult positions to try to get better GOEs, she no longer does a scratch spin and does a Y position in her final combination spin for example that is much slower. She needed to focus on jumps more because her spin levels were consistent in her SP but not in her LP while jumps were inconsistent in both programs in the 2014-2015 season. She got a lot better last season and shifted her LP around to give herself more time to spin and nab those levels.

Another thing about Ashley that shocked me when I saw her live, is just how tiny she is. Ashley is quite small and any muscle mass that she develops is sure to show up on her tiny frame. When you see her standing next Polina Edmunds you can really see how tiny Ashley really is.

Ashley's spectacular presence on the ice defies her size. This is why I can't accept size as an excuse for any of Miyahara's shortcomingss.

Urgh, how small do you think she is? under 5'?
Her height is average for skaters.

Satoko is truely tiny. Way below average for skaters. Sad that some people are really that clueless to compare an average 50%ile to a 2%ile. Go back and take remedial math to see how many standard deviation Satoko is away from Ashley.

I never trust Bio's as they are often inaccurate. Ashley's Bio states that she is 5' 3" and Polina's Bio states that she is 5' 6". Maybe it was the angle but there is no way that Polina is only 3" taller than Ashley. Have a look at this picture of Polina, Gracie, and Ashley. I don't know if they're standing on level ground in this picture. However, it gives you a better perspective on just how small Ashley really is. She's a giant performer and really knows how to "fill the space" as my dance teacher used to say.

Wow FlattFan, no need to be rude and condescending.

And I stand by my statement that height and size whether 50%ile or 2%ile is no excuse for shortcomings. You are welcome to disagree but please be respectful.

When Ashley was at Omaha Nationals in 2013, I snapped a photo of her with my 5'1" girlfriend. Ashley was about 2 inches taller, which would make her 5'3" as listed. What impressed my friend (besides Ashley's friendliness) was how rock-hard muscular that Ashley was; at one point she'd had her arm across Ashley's back, at her waist. My friend, who is a lifelong follower of Olympic track athletes, said Ashley's build was quite similar to that of an elite sprinter. And it surprised her.

I hope she is serious about improving the spins. Obviously it's huge for her that she's been able to get consistent 3-3's, but something I find extremely frustrating about her is that she often does give away levels on the spins. It's made a difference in the standings more than once, and it's really a pity since it's an easy way to eek out a few more points over a competition.

No need to make stupid statement either. So physical challenge is not a good excuse for shortcomings? LOL. Funny you don't see short swimmers at the Olympics. Those losers must be lazy that's why they can't make it. Or no tall gymnasts are at the Olympics right? because their height is not an excuse. What a dumb statement.

I've seen her outside several times. She's not short for a skater.

Again with the disrespect. I could go on defending my idea with a very strong response but I am no longer interested in any discussion with you.

Well, I'll be in San Jose for Nationals and hopefully I'll get close enough to her to see for myself.

Walk around the corridor at the SJ convention center, you'll see all of them in person. Better yet, book a room sanctioned by the federation, you'll see all of them staying there at the end of the day. Coaches, parents, skaters. It's quite entertaining.

I've actually seen several skaters in person but don't remember how tall they were. The only reason I know how tall Jason Brown is, is because I crashed right into him in 2011 while I was trying to get Joshua's autograph. It was the same way with Rachael Flatt. It's amazing how different these skaters look in person. IMO, Camera's do not do justice to Rachael Flatt. She has beautiful eyes and alabaster skin. Just gorgeous.
