Staviski -- Suspended Sentence (merged)

It rarely happens to me nowadays, but my English is kind of deserting me here. What does "suspended" mean in this case? I thought it meant that he has 2,5 years probation, but later the article says that he also is on probation for 5 years, so suspended has to mean something else. Could someone try to explain please?

I believe the term in English means, he was found guilty but does not have to serve actual prison time.

Joe

That's right;
it means he doesn't go to jail but he is found guilty & on probation
for the 2 1/2 yrs, propberly has to report to someone every week or so,
They want to know what he's doing or do service for the community.

"Suspended sentence" and "probation" are similar, but not quite the same. "Probation" is in and of itself a punishment, with specific repercussions for not meeting its conditions. A "suspended sentence" means that the punishment (imprisonment) is never really entered; if one violates the conditions of his "suspended sentence", then the original sentence comes into effect.

I personally think that he should go to jail considering that his accident resulted in a person's death.
But since he is a world champion.................

He did not get probation because he is a world champion. This is the sentence also every other bulgarian would get, wait not, every other bulgarian would not even make it to the court and would be released.

In the US, if a crime victim is not awarded all their damages as part of the restitution ordered in the criminal case, they can still bring a civil suit. Are Maxim's victims still able to sue for additional damages? Is the amount awarded reasonable by Bulgarian standards?
The father of the girl said today, that they are going to sue him again to get at least the same amount of money as the family of the deceased boy. As for the amout it´s really high for Bulgarian standarts.

What the heck? He killed a person because he was drunk and doesn't even get to serve time in jail? That's just lame.

It's OK to kill someone, hurt someone. Just be drunk while you do it.
What a bad, bad boy - no driver's licence for you. Yeah - that will teach ya.

Unbelievable!

"It's Hard to Keep Your Head Bowed for Life" - Oh Boo-Hoo! How can he bare it?

ITA................seems extremely light. I mentioned in another thread a US NHL hockey player, married (not sure about kids) was sent to jail for four years when he DUI and crashed, killing the passenger, a team mate. No-one else was injured in the crash...................I don't know what the additional finanacial penalty was but he is out of it for four years and obviously this will likely also ruin his career...............too bad he didn't drive in Bulgaria instead.

Ivana, thank you for the insight!

This is...............sickening. No jail time? What do you think he'd have gotten if he were American and this had happened in the U.S.?

I am very surprised that he won't get any jail time. This sounds a very strange sentence that is against common sense. Is this all set? Or will they appeal to the supreme court?

why is everyone so hostile towards him? Like he's the only one that's ever made a mistake in his life? Let's not be so judgmental. I'm sure this guy's suffered enough too. you guys all sound as though you want HIM dead or in a coma or in prison for life or else justice won't be served?

But I think the bottom line is he DID take anothers life. And Most feel he should be punished for it

Anywho, If they do return to competitive skating, imagine what commentators and skaters will say. Talk about controversy. lmao.

I am not hostile towards him at all. Please don't add up emotional interpretation. Personally speaking, he still is my most favoriate ice dancer ever and I have never hated him because of his mistake.

Apart from that, however, he doesn't seem to be getting what a person who did what he did deserves at all. This judging seems to me to be simply outrageous.

From other skating forums I have understood that he got a sentence according to the laws of Bulgaria, definetely not less than other persons under the same circumstances. Besides, the damages he has to pay are very high Bulgariawise.

Could you or any other person be so kind as to explain to me why it's reasonable according to the laws of Bulgaria? It's been always reported that he'd be in prison for 3 - 10 years according to the laws of Bulgaria if he is found to be guilty. I don't understand why he now gets no jail time despite that they indeed found him to be guilty. What's the logic behind this seemingly contradictory arrangement? The news reports are so simplistic that perhaps I might be missing some important points that made them reach this judgement.
