They’re age categories. Novice A are 11-13 year olds, and Novice B are 9-11 year olds.

Main differences~
Novice A FS = 3min, Novice B FS= 2:30min
Novice A Free programs contain a max of 6 jump elements, while Novice B programs have max 5
Novice A programs require a StSq, Novice B perform a ChSq

For both Novice A and B, 2 of the jumping passes can be combos or 1 combo and 1 SEQ (of which 1 can be a 3 jump combination)
Both are allowed a max of 3 spins in a FS, of which 1 should be a spin combination

About the scores : Generally the Novice A skaters score higher than the Novice B skaters. However, back in 2012, the Novice B national champion Marin Honda scored higher than the national Novice A champion Kaori Sakamoto. And last year, the Novice B champion Sumika Kanazawa’s score was only beaten by one Novice A girl : Rena Uezono.
