Tatsuki Machida

A Tatsuki fan ripped the audio to the incredible East Of Eden from Worlds. It may be strange without the actual visuals but it actually captures the moment in a way I didn't think it was possible. You can hear the soft sound of his blades, voices cheering for him in the crowd and the strong applause before, during and most importantly after the program. Listen to it with headphones/earplugs and you can relive the grandeur of that moment.

Thank you for the link Ioanap. It gave me goosebumps and made me sad that we won't see him at the Worlds. I hope he knows how many hearts he has touched and realizes how much support he had from his fans around the world.

This is clip of Hanyu but when asked what his vision of an Adult and a Man was, he said "It's Tatsuki. As a skater and as a performer, he doesn't swerve (from his chosen path)."

They've always been appreciative towards each other. Tatsuki used to say Yuzuru is the reason why he was so successful last season. They've made a powerful duo in 2014 and their skills complimented and completed each other. I wish they could have given us another memorable "fight" at this season's Worlds.

Thank you for the translation Newbiespectator. :) If I were to guess Yuzuru's answer to such a query, I would have said "Evgeni Plushenko" in a heartbeat, so I was pleasantly surprised by the reply Yuzuru gave. Yuzuru's answer may have been due in part to having been in direct competition with Tatsuki. In any case, I think Yuzuru's description of Tatsuki is very apt and affirms how Tatsuki has really taken his personal motto of "timshel" to heart.

Ionap, thank you so much for the compilation of Tatsuki's best programs you have thoughtfully provided us Tatsuki fans. His SA "Ninth Symphony" LP performance in particular is one I now watch to help lift me from life's doldrums. So I think Tatsuki got his wish. He has said in the icenetwork interview you had linked us to: "When I am tired or depressed, I always listen to this piece. It gives me inspiration and power. That's why I wanted to express that 9th Symphony to all the people around the world." And how he did!

I am sharing now the CBC commentary of that performance (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2dlexy_2014-sa-tatsuki-machida-fs-cs_sport) and his SA SP performance (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2dlepk_2014-sa-tatsuki-machida-sp-cs_sport). Thanks to the uploader dasani.

Carol Lane on the SP: "I just wanted it to keep going. It was just mesmerizing."
Kurt Browning on the SP: "Ballet on ice." "That is the power of complete and utter commitment...And this gentleman has passion." "I believe for him...the jumps should be incorporated into the program..." "And that's a bow."

Kurt on the LP: "Most skaters will be swept away [overpowered] by the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven, but he is just riding the wave." I count myself fortunate that Tatsuki has taken me with him in that ride.

Disclaimer: the following analisys is a little like the one that Marketing heads will do before sponsoring an athlete. All opinion is taken with out emotional involve so even when I point out some "negatives" things about Tatsuki I will like to made clear that I actually like him, his interactions with other members of team Japan show me he is a cute man, but a very shy and awkward, nerdy one.

As I said is not easy for a brand to sponsor a sportmen/woman

Thank you cruzceleste!
Before I read your comment I was thinking "why no one sponsored him? He is so serious and hard working!"
The sad thing is that I should have a marketing's brain...
Everything you pointed out is true, and now I realized (too late) how much I liked him!!

Maria thank you for sharing the CBC videos of Tatsuki's Skate America programs. I agree with everything Kurt said - especially the part where he noticed he was better than last season. Yes, he was better and still getting better and better, because his programs at the Japanese Nationals were much more refined and cohesive already, even if the jumps still weren't there in the FS. The abrupt stop is still painful even a week after his retirement but we can only accept his decision and appreciate what he's given us.

He's been trying to build his second career all this time and it probably got to a point where both skating and studies were suffering. Since he's very serious about his second career and wants to get a doctorate, the decision made sense - but at the same time as a fan I can't help being a bit selfish and thinking "he could have postponed school for as long as his quads and triple axels were still strong and reliable". There are so many skaters out there who would do anything to have his jumps (and scores on a good day). But it's his life and he doesn't owe anything to me or to anybody else for that matter and I'm sure he's aware he could have done much more just looking at the state he was in after the SP at the Nationals.

On a more positive note, maybe some of you noticed fans holding posters that said "after the rain" during the gala. Here is a 4 minute interview done somewhere at the end of the previous season that explains the meaning of "after the rain" and it also highlights the "philosopher" side of his personality. Turn the CC button on for English subtitles :)

I wish I knew him earlier, so I could've had more precious memories during his time as a competitive skater. I still have a lot of video clips to catch up, but well still am sad over his retirement. Looking at Russian male skaters, Voronov and Menshov over 27 and 30 years old respectively, but they still can compete as top skaters, so I wished Tatsuki compete a little longer. I did not pay attention much to men's discipline until this season, and never thought of men's figure skating as much appealing or fascinating as ladies skating. I had watched some of top skaters' performances in big events, but they never touched my heart although I knew they are all good skaters. However, when I saw Tatsuki's performance at Skate America this year, I couldn't help but getting charmed by his skating. Come on, the guy has a lot of acne covered on his face with a funny hair style (which I now adore) and is quite short in height. He did not look like a figure skater that I used to see, but his presence on the ice and every movement were so mesmerizing. The experience is like opening a new door; whole new world indeed for me. I began to enjoy men's discipline due to Tatsuki.

Thank you for bringing the interview here. With the clip, I realize again why he chose to study literature instead of sport related majors and his perspective on life comes from his own experience. Tatsuki finally could be equipped with the quad jumps as his arsenal after his hard works for 8 years!!! and get a spotlight as a top skater. That must be really frustrating until he got up to the top position, but he did not give up and more endeavored himself in hoping that he could see a big rainbow after the seemingly endless raining. I love his invincible spirit and tenacity, so am so sure that he can accomplish very well in his second life. :)

ITA. And I won't blame you one bit for wishing he could have stayed on and postponed his studies because I do too.

Thank you for linking us to that gem of an interview. I wonder what the rainbow will be for us Tatsuki fans after the rain of our tears. Maybe to see a Dr. Tatsuki Machida who's in demand not only for his excellent lectures but also in helping skaters achieve their full potential. He will be in demand for his choreography, stage design, etc. He will also have a loving family and a partner who listens patiently and knows when to give him space and solitude for his creative pursuits. :)

Thank you for sharing your experience in becoming a fan of Tatsuki. He may not have the matinee idol looks of Daisuke or Yuzuru, but he is mesmerizing in his own right. True enchanter.

On a lighter note, re his hair, at one time, I believe he once sported a mullet and then had a mushroomy one. It will be interesting whether he will have the same scope of hairstyling in the academe. ;)

Tatsuki having a loving and understanding partner is a nice thing to imagine, especially after portraying "sad love" throughout the season in such an authentic, personal way. The other day I saw some Japanese fans discussing his SP shirt on twitter and how the slash he had on the left side represented a broken heart.

Speaking of his hair, another Japanese fan made a nice fan art including all of his hair styles over the years ;)

Tis a mortal wound. ;)

 Though I think Daisuke is still ahead of him in this department...

Takahashi is certainly a good-looking guy and entertainer. I think if Tatsuki had the skin troubles less, his look would be much nicer, since he has a well balanced appearance. In earlier days of Tatsuki, he looked cute in a nice skin condition, so I've wondered what affects him to have acne so much. I like his current hairstyle looking like Beethoven in agony trying to compose masterpieces. When I searched out Tatsuki's photo, I found this twitter account named irenissi who seems like the same person having uploaded a load of clips regarding Tatsuki to YouTube. I find her comments about his hair are really amusing. :)

I wish he keeps on having the hairstyle that makes him a maestro. Until 2013, Tatsuki looked a bit nerdy and very younger than his age due to his hairstyle.

I never thought the slash on his shirt for the SP might have such a hidden metaphor for his lost love! That is good to know.

Also thank you again for directing to the awesome fan arts.

OMG OMG OMG thank you from the bottom of my hearts Maria Victoria I always waited to watch CBC coverage of Tatsuki's SA programs and you made my wish come true!!! I just wish Stacey was there to cover but to be honest, I am in tears now its such a bittersweet feeling I love Tatsuki so much I am happy for his decision but I am also sad about him retiring. Always makes me cry watching his no.9! Such an honor to watch the program.

I remember my skin doctor told me that acne break out is due to stress. This means, when you don't get enough sleep, when you are under some sort of pressure, when you have an unhealthy diet. But generally acne is really hereditary. If you have it, you have it.

I will miss Tatsuki so much, i already miss him. :mecry:

Thank you for the answer. Some years after now, he may have a clean skin back or not since studying demands a lot of attention and pressure. :P

My family and I were watching The 10 Commandments together the other night (because we are very nerdy) and it hit me like a flash of lightning from the sky:
Machida reminds me so much of Yul Brynner/ Ramses. Have any of you watched the movie recently? The posing, the intense looks out of the tops of his eyes the way he moves around the screen.
http://sonofhel.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/42-pharaoh-ramses-ii-yul-brynner.jpg

Anyway, the whole movie is just full to the brim with drama and extremely cheesy -yet witty- one liners... a classic that can be watched at any time.

I think I see what you mean. In my family, The 10 Commandments is a Lenten staple.

I was thinking Tatsuki can also play Yul Brynner's King if ever there is a FS program take-off from The King and I. For the role of Anna played by Deborah Kerr, I will cast Ashley Wagner. ;)

A couple of more videos from CBC

Symphony no 9 - Trophee Eric Bompard
Symphony no 9 - Grand Prix Final

Kurt said it all: "Skating is so easy for this fellow. He's the one skater that can have his jumps not be on and the program will always be so close to the original expectation."

Yes, sanbinfire thankfully uploaded them to YouTube, so I intended to make a direction for the clips, and you did! Thanks as always.

Kurt's comment is so correct to describe Tatsuki's performance.
I'll never be bored of watching the program. The program is so beautiful and inspirational that I've felt urged to write down something from my mind every time seeing it.
