The Dorothy Hamill 'Do

Just curious.......how many of the ladies here had the Dorothy Hamill cut? I know I was personally subjected to this for 4 years, but after years of therapy and shock treatments, I got past it.

Family photos from 1977? Eeeek!! (if I can find a 'good' one, I'm going to use it for my custom photo) - The Horror!! The Horror!!

Never! My hair is way too thick!!! I have had other disastrous cuts over the years, but never tried the Dorothy Hammel cut. It was all the rage.

You lucky dog......I was sporting that thing for years (along with glasses, braces, and greasy hair). The term "toad" comes to mind when I look back on it.

Not only was it the rage in Ladies salons, but the Gentlemen barbers were advertising 'layer cuts'. Layer cuts became the vogue for men, and I do believe it started with Dorothy.

I had very fine hair when I was young and as a dancer wore it either long enough to be put up or short enough to just not care. We were modern dancers so I didn't have to worry about "Swan Lake":lol: But around 1982 I wanted something different going from long to short so the guy at the salon with the discount coupon (first big mistake) offered to give me a "Dorothy Hamilton" cut. I guess he meant a short bob with a bald spot When he said I'd need to blow-dry it, I passed so he gave me your basic mullet. My response was one of those "Well, maybe I'll get used to it" deals but as soon as I got home, my boyfriend started laughing and said I looked like Bess Myerson (for those of you who don't remember her, think Hillary Clinton as a brunette with a mullet). Ten seconds later, after I'd threatened to cut something of <strong>his</strong> off, I took the scissors and a 1&1/2 inch piece of cardboard and did my own "layered" look. I made my boyfriend hold the mirror behind me. You didn't think I'd let him have the scissors:lol:

That's my story of Dorothy's Do, which on me was more of a Dorothy's Don't

Glad to see I wasn't the only one cursed with a bad Hamill cut.....I've had some pretty wretched cuts in my time.....the worst was when my mom took me to get a cut (this was before I had a real say in how my hair was styled), and Mom had the guy give me an atrocious mullet cut. Since my hair is as straight as Plushenko's, she decided AFTER the cut that we needed to get it permed. You can only imagine the disaster....I looked far more like a poodle than Oksana Baiul ever did. I still haven't forgiven Mom for that one! :lol:

The pics, however, are good for a great laugh from time to time.

That's one of my missions in life (about my kid)....

I've seen photos of my mom during that same timeframe, and given her clothing choices, I'm not surprised at some of the wretched haircuts. I'm convinced someone was pumping nitrous oxide into the ventillation systems at all the malls between 1975 and 1985. How else can you explain the decline in fashion back then?

I had her hair-do for several years and loved the way it looked.....the only drawback is that it looked shaggy as it grew out, so you had to have it trimmed quite often......42

Never had the "Dorothy Do" (hair to thick and wavy, actually the front of my hair is straighter then the back) but I did have the "Farah Faucet Do" As I get older my hair gets more curly and do I dare say more grey


I had the distinction of being nominated most "freakiest hair" when I was in the 9th grade (back in '74). I don't know why because there were a lot of my classmates that had freakier hair then me! I wanted to be nominated for most popular:smokin: :lol:

When I was 14, I had a "modified" Hamill cut that didn't quite work......due to the angle and flip of the hair falling in my face, I was christened "ski jump" by my friends.....

When I grew up, all girls worn there hair straight, long, parted in the middle. Susan Dey from The Partridge Family comes to mind as an example of this do.

Sadly, if you didn't have straight hair, you were subject to a certain degree of not-nice comments. The yearbook staff put "Known for her frizzy hair" next to my picture. I did not buy the book.

One nice thing about today's styles is that there is no designated style. You can wear it long, you can wear it short, you can wear it curly, you can wear it straight. Choose the style that most compliments your face and that works for your lifestyle.

I too had to the Dorothy 'Do. However, it wasn't such a hit with my mom. I was living with my dad at the time and had hair down the middle of my back. My dad was really tired of taking care of it (all the brushing and tangles - ouch!), so I got the Dorothy 'Do (he loved it so much, I got two new dresses - which was a big deal for my dad, he hated to shop)When I went to visit my mom, she cried. I remember liking it at the time, but everyone had to make comments about it (kids are so cruel). I think I only have one picture of myself right after the fateful cut and it actually looked pretty good!

I took a fashion risk back in 1991 and had my hubby's cousin give me the Dorothy Hamill 'do. It was so easy to take care of and after having the BIG PERMED Hair of the 80's, I needed a change.

And would you believe, I had people come up to me and ask who did my hair, because they wanted the same hair cut? YIKES! I thought I was the only insane one stuck in the 70's....

It only lasted a year before I grew it out.
