The Judging Controversy Thread

i think all you need to do is compare adelina's performance to yuna's 2010.. they're saying they were virtually the same quality of performance?

One of the judges clearly "thought" it was better than Yuna's 2010 FS.

Judge 7's protocol for Adelina:

GOE:
3
3
3
3
3
-1 (the combo jump where she stepped out)
3
3
3
2
3

PCS:
9.5
9.5
9.75
9.75
9.75

It was really good but it doesn't come close to Yuna's FS in Vancouver.

I'll bet that it was one of the two judges in question:

Judge whose husband is the head of the Russian Federation or the Ukraine judge once suspended for fixing the Nagano Olympics.

AAtleast we agree on something, but it is not acceptable for location to affect scores EVER. The fact that this does happen shows that skating is in huge trouble in its current path. A skater should not feel like their chances of victory are lessened or gone since they are in a main rival's territory.
While I agree with you that this is unfair, as long as it remains a judged sport, there will always be a hometown bias. The only way to eliminate it would be to not allow an audience during the competition, or to ensure that there were equal numbers of spectators from each skater's country (which isn't really feasible). To some extent, every country is going to cheer louder for their own, and as long as human beings are doing the judging, there is no way to eliminate the subconscious bias this creates.

I think the reason that the scores were so out of whack here has more to do with an audience that didn't appreciate good skating on the part of anyone, and cheered for their own regardless of what they did on the ice.

Yah, 2010 had an extra 2A. Take that 2A out, and the crazy GOE out, and you'll have Adelina beating Yuna by 10 points.

Likewise my friend. Take out all that Russian inflation and ridiculous GOEs even after WALKING out from a jump, and you'll have Adelina down at third place.

... and ridiculous GOEs even after WALKING out from a jump...

lol. i convinced my roommates to watch FS with me (yay! a first! :p ) and they were both like 'i don't get it; how can you trip and still win a gold medal?' i was like i don't know what to tell you; how DOES one trip and still win gold? ugh.

There's hometown bias even in non-judged sports. If they can't get refs to be fair in basketball, football, etc., there's really not a lot you can do for figure skating which has such a huge subjective component.

Adelina rocked the house. She won by technical merit not PCS. YuNa lost like how Nancy Kerrigen, Michelle Kwan, Irina Slutzkaya, and 2010 Plushenko did.

Adelina won by PC's if the PC's was scored based on actual bullet points of the IJS, she would have been 3rd, even with her technical advantage

OH PLEASE. Michelle Kwan, Irina Slutzkaya, and Plushenko (when he didn't win gold) all made mistakes and that is why they did not get gold. Please stop comparing this to those situations.

She actually did won by her PCS. Everyone was expecting Yuna and Carolina to have a comfortable PCS cushion if they skate clean.

Can anyone explain in good faith Adelina's scores that NineTail posted in #490? I would have THAT judge fess up the rationale for those marks.

Edit: These

GOE:
3

2

PCS:

I wholeheartedly disagree. Adelina's unfair PCS bump was the biggest factor in her winning.

Over a course of a month or so, Adelina's PCS beats Carolina's and Mao's? She is just 0.09 behind Yuna? That's just the Free Skate too. She was overscored in PCS for her Short Program as well. You ask any current skater or ex-skater if Adelina suddenly improved her PCS skating that much in the last month that now she is on par with Mao, Costner, and Yuna and lets see what their answer will be.

Does this make sense? Oh wait, one of the judges husband is the head of the Russian Federation! Another was a Ukraine judge once suspended for fixing the Nagano Olympics.

Connect the dot...pretty blatant over scoring for the Russian skaters by at least two of the judges.

Yep. And don't forget spiral. Yuna scored that with 2A and a spiral, and non-factored GOEs.

Exactly! So this the best LP ever. Best ever. I need to puke!
I will join WeakAnkles, no Russian will never see a dime from me. If I'm Maleficent, I curse both Adelina and Julia, before the sun sets the same day next year, they will need hip replacements, and then prick their fingers on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. But I'm not Maleficent, so I guess they will only need hip replacements. A few years down the line.

No need to curse the skaters man. I would curse the judges who mostly likely got bribed.

So why in the heck is Lil Miss 2-Foot mad? Because the judges didn't overlook her two-footed landings?

Christine Brennan writes figure skating for USA Today, and is a commentator on ABC and National Public Radio.

She tweeted:
"headline is that this is worse than Salt Lake City. Terrible decision."

Also she said Ashley Wagner made a statement, that she was speechless about the results and anonymous judging must be eliminated.

I really don't know what to say to the judges.

I do not understand how Sot's jumps got some +3s in GOE.

I do not understand +9s in her PCS in both her SP and LP.

I do not understand the overall standings.

I cannot believe that Sot's LP was best ever according to COP.

This is sad.
