The Judging Controversy Thread

The lowest transition score Sotnikova got was 8.50. The lowest Yu-na got was 7.75. REALLY?

And how in the hell did Sotnikova get a higher SS score than Kostner?

No need to curse the skaters man. I would curse the judges who mostly likely got bribed.

The skaters acted like they completely deserved their scores though. Even if they couldnt refuse them they should have the decency to admit they were blatantly overmarked but acted like they deserved every point. So on that alone I cant feel an ounce of sympathy for the skaters, heck why feel sympathy for a skater who got an ill gotten Olympic gold medal.

Exactly! So this the best LP ever. Best ever. I need to puke!

Think of how incredulous it would've been if Adelina's score went over ~150. Then it would've been even more obvious and even harder to explain. The judges dodged the bullet there. Clever.

Is there anyone who can tell me how Sot's 3Lz did not get the edge call? It was definite flutz in my eyes.

Pangtonfan like seriously, what is wrong with you? Do you not think before you type? Like I have no words for your disgusting comments. Its over.

I think you're a parody now.

And can someone also please tell me how Julia scored almost 136 with a fall on the sal and a stumble on the loop? And how did she get 70+ PCS?

Yes another new revelation. Adelina Fraudnikova has better skating skills than Kostner and Kim.

Oh dear lord... Honestly, figure skating is doomed to the likes of girls who randomly flail their arms & legs and skate to fast music. I for one am proud for Yuna and Carolina for not choosing to frantically move around during the step sequences to somehow assure a level 4. Their steps stayed true to their respective programs and are unique to the program. The movements in their skates weren't meant to just garner points or fulfill bullet points.

Watched the late night NBC coverage, had the 3 American skaters, had Scott and Sandra, then Sot in a very short interview, Yuan in a short interview, then Weir and Tara. Wagner says going for 4 more years. Sandra definitely thought Yuna won, Scott praising everyone, Tara definitely thought Sot won, and Weir seemed to agree. Yuna said she did everything she could and happy with her performance, she said she is so happy everything is over, clearly constant training and expectations have taken there toll on her. Costas asked Weir and Tara about Wagner continuing, they both thought it would be very very hard at her age to remain competitive in four years.

Costas asked Weir if he was treated properly as a gay man in Sochi. Weir said he was treated very well and had a great time. He then told a story which I found amusing. He would be in public restrooms, and a gentlement would walk up to the adjoinging stall, take one look at Weir, and immediately walk back to the entrance and check the door to make sure he was in the correct restroom! He said this happens in the US as well.

This is an article from Germany. I used Google translate.

Frauen-Kur im Eiskunstlauf: Verbeugung vor dem Gastgeber

Women's Health in figure skating: bow to the host

Adelina Sotnikowa won in Sochi surprising gold in figure skating. In this case, after the cure all spoke for the sudkoreanische defending champion Kim Yu Na. But the jury decided for the Russian - a judgment aftertaste.

When Kim Yu Na had finished her performance, the hall was a single outcry. A cry of enthusiasm. The defending champion from South Korea to the shape it had before been so many question marks because of their injury histories, had once again shown it all. It was a souverane cure, peppered with triple jumps without any wobbles, coupled with the elegance with which Kim had thrilled the audience in Vancouver four years ago.

Thus, the jury's verdict was like a bow to Russia, the organizers of these Games. The country, which had previously been lost its prestige object through the fruheAusscheiden the national ice hockey team. The country that so terribly happy with a glamorous gold medal of these games want crowns. The Russia got now. Sotnikowa has jumped into the breach left by the ice hockey team. Now can these games from russ safe view soothes going to end. The country has its heroine.

Figure skating is and remains a sport that is dependent on subjective judgment Spruchen. Kim has experienced the supply main on Wednesday. Your goal, as a first Lauferin by Katarina Witt to win gold twice in a row at the Olympic Games, it will no longer can achieve. It was her last winter, she finished her big Karriere.Die Korean has accepted the verdict with a slightly crooked smile and then adopted and fair manner with a wave to the audience. As she had suspected such a thing.

I loved watching Miss Tara and Miss Johnny doing the commentary on NBC Sports channel. I hope they start taking over for that old, bald-headed, Oompa Loompa Scott Hamilton!

I feel the same way about Hanyu so it's not just the girls imo.

That is the score skating fans worried that Yuna might receive in case she would fall before the games began. Lets you know where Yulia would be had she not made those mistakes. Scary thought.

Of course this was a fix from the get-go. It's Mr. Putin getting his revenge for Plushenko not winning the gold in Vancouver.

There's hometown bias even in non-judged sports. If they can't get refs to be fair in basketball, football, etc., there's really not a lot you can do for figure skating which has such a huge subjective component.

True. I think there are several components to hometown advantage. One is that the energy and cheers of the crowd can help bring out the best in athletes. The second is that even referees, who play a less direct role in the outcome can succumb to unconscious bias. And a third effect is that the cheering crowds can change the perception of the judges and result in higher scores than if the same performance was met with fewer cheers.

I think the only thing that would help is to have a separate panel judge PCS. It wouldn't completely eliminate the bias, but it old reduce it, IMO
