The Judging Controversy Thread

Adelina was fantastic. She brought down the house. And she won the gold.

It's a little hard to understand the score gaps or the mysterious downgrading of step sequences and the PCS inflation, so fans are reacting badly.

Indeed. We should not forget that Yulia Lipnitskaya received 200+ points (!!!!!!!!) for such magnificent showing in her SP and FS. She even got higher PCS than Mao. If this is not a fraud, I do not know what is.

You're totally right. I'd hate to see this whole thing characterized as some fan wars when there are legit questions that needed to be answered.

Very good summary. And if we dig into the protocols look at these scores for Adelina:

Exactly. And obviously it's not Julia nor Adelina's fault. I actually think Adelina's win was arguable, she gave it all, although I thought Yuna was much more refined and she made the second Gold.

But the disgrace here is with the "discretion" the judges used to its fullest.

Liptniskaia's SS
8.68
Mao's SS
8.75
Yuna'sSS
9.21
Sotnikova's SS
9.18
Caro's SS
9.14

Liptniskaia's 3lutz/3toe
11.20
Yuna Kim's 3lutz/3toe
11.70

Liptniskaia's Performance Execution
8.68
Mao's Performance Execution
8.79

So according to the judges...
Yulia's SS is "almost as bad" as Mao's, because Mao's stroke covers just as little as Julia's.
Yuna and Caro's SS is not all that much better than Sot's. I mean Sot improved so much in the last... month.

Yulia's 3z/3t is almost as good as Yuna's effortless combo that covers so much ice with height and smooth landing. Take of edge? Nope, we don't pay attention to that stuff.

Yulia's performance execution with two obvious mistakes with noticeable decrease in speed at the end was "almost as bad" as Mao's once-in-a-lifetime, skate-like-there's-no-tomorrow and intense performance.

Not one person in skating I've talked to said that's the way (the result) should have gone,” former US Olympic figure skating coach Audrey Weisiger told USA Today.

The judging pool for the free skating program was slightly different to the one that had awarded Kim top points in the short program the night before. One addition was Ukranian Yuri Balkov. In her book The Second Mark: Courage, Corruption and the Battle for Olympic Gold, author Joy Goodwin wrote that hours before the finals of the 1998 Olympic ice dancing competition in Nagano, Canadian judge Jean Senft tape-recorded a phone call made to her hotel room by Balkov.

Adelina was clearly superior technically. It's the second mark that is in question. But today Kim was very tight and Adelina had more attack.

Yes, I think Adelina deserved to win. It could have gone either way, but I think I would have been a little uncomfortable with a Kim win. And I prefer Kim.

YES, here I am! You can say anything, her programm was more difficult than Caro and Yuna. Yuna's spins were slow and, well, the programm was not particularly special. Caro, well, easier jumps, spins weaker, and, again, a might be one of the minority who hates her Bolero...
You go girl!

I agree totally, down to hating Bolero. This outrage is kinda Russophobic. You'd think Adelina splatted three time and still won. It's the whining (by commentators, us forum posters are allowed to whine) that make skating look bad. You can argue the details, but Adelina is a credible winner.

Sorry guys but I found Gold's 136 with a fall and 7 points higher pcs than the Team event as much worth mentioning too.

Me too, but that's because I thought and think Gracie's Team PCS was lowballed; she should have been 5 to 7 points higher there (which would have still put her behind Julia,) which is ok with me, but the difference was too big.

why do people keep pointing this out as if it is some enlightening piece of investigative work. You don't have to be exceptionally skilled to look at the protocols and know that sotnikova's scores won. The question is how her PCS is anywhere near Kim's and how her GOE is so high.

The NY times does not help answer those questions

The times article is error plagued. Their own multi pic contradicts the point they are making an effort to explain respecting the combos. The rules clearly state making skills appear effortless is part of the criteria. I feel bad for Adelina, she did nothing more than have the skate of her life and now she will suffer because of the reprobates running the ISU. Sad for our beloved sport

Well, Yuna always had won because goe and pcs, and while she is great it was overscoring too.
And if the petition get something, it would be very interesting they analyze and explain point for point of every skater. For example I dont understand Yuna getting 9.57 in interprtation for her skate that night, very absurd too.

Agree. We know Adelina's BV is superior to Yuna's already.

Yes, it's so funny that Yuna's fans are complaining that the score was rigged! I love it!!!

Her BV is only superior to Yu-na's by 2.94. Adelina won by completely blowing away Yu-na in GOE's and getting the same PCS.

Sotnikova deserves high GOEs too
difficulty in entry and exits, huge combinations and big jumps
Yuna's money jump is 3Lz-3t , Sotnikova while her best 3-3 is only a toe, it gets huge distance and height so merits high GOEs
her 2A-3T is on the best in ladies, plus she has a solid 3loop to boot

she skated with fire, like she wanted to prove the douberts wrong
she was mighty pissed being left off the team and did it with conviction
Yuna while she did her jumps ( abeit 6 triples only ) was tentative when she was skating
overall the crowd was on Adelina's side and she won

done!

Oh, really? I think when Yuna won her OGM she won on all of BV(executed), GOE, and PCS. And I agree with you that the petition has to be about every skater. Will be more intersting if we analyze Adelina and Julia's scores.

Exactly! I don't know of anyone who is against Adelina's technical score. We need a NYT piece explaining her PCS/GOE.

I don't see a conspiracy. Figure skating judging has never been objective and never will be. Skating in Russia helped Adelina big time. It's not like this is the first time a contested outcome has occurred in figure skating. Some people are still upset about Baiul winning over Kerrigan, and the judges, at the time, went for the artistic presentation over the technical. Tara and Michelle could have gone either way, the judges went for the greater technical content and energy on that night. I believe a similar thing happened yesterday. One can debate who is right winner, but I don't think it was rigged.
