The Judging Controversy Thread

CBC

After Yuna's performance:

Female 1: "That was absolute tour de force of women skating. If you were to write a text book, that would be how to do it."

Male: "There is a lovely combination of attack with the powerful speed down the ice. NOBODY can compare to the flow that she takes across the ice on her jumps and on the landings. NOBODY!...."

Male: "You can take photograph of her anywhere during her choreography and they will be exquisite all the time. No flexed foot, everything in place."

Male : "This contest is going to be a lot closer than i personally think it should be" aka Yuna should be a clear winner
"She's not used to waiting and not knowing already"

Yuna's Score announced:

Female 1:
"OOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH............... That's a shock....."
"......... Did you see that coming?......"
Female 2: "Well, i think we saw a medal coming for Adelina but we're not sure if it's going to be that one."

Male: "I'm still stuck on the quality of skating that Yuna Kim has and the many moments where you see jarring images during Sotnikova, she's not ready"
Female 1: "No, it's not as a refined performance [as Yuna's]" (Adelina's skating)

Male: "Did i....Did i just get caught up in it and i didn't see it? The judges have their job and i really look forward to looking at it again so that i can see with fresh eyes. But yes, i'm sitting here a little stunned..."

Did he lie?

But Adelina's score simply does not stand up to scrutiny, and people as a whole do not accept the results.

You think that because a lot of GS posters are reluctant to confront Yuna fans. There are people who are outraged, but there are a lot who aren't. Simply put, on this night Yuna needed 7 triples.

If you think 9 judges can get together and score 5 different components and plan to have one skater finish less than a tenth ahead of the other on PCS then I can see how you are so easily convinced that there was a conspiracy.

You seem to have no sense of humor. Not surprising.

A single .25 change in one of the components scores would have had Adelina in front.

Did you guys know ISU had a figure skating discussion thread? We need to show them how outrageous we are. Please post your comment on the judging conspiracy.

Dont even bother with that site. I used to post there occasionally and it is a waste of time. The moderator posts as both JimSlate71 the poster and siteadmin and puts a gag order on anyone, deleting anything remotedly anti Russian or anti ISU. I am sure it is someone heavily involved high up in the ISU corruption, or perhaps even a judge, but either way you wont be allowed to post anything meangingful without the Russian moderator JimSlate taking it down.

With this tone-deafness from the ISU as well as a few forum members who will advocate anything and anyone that is Russian, I now hope the S. Korea will not forget this robbery come 2018.

I hope they do "forget" about it, but I have a feeling they won't. All I want is for this event to be judged fairly and without bias as possible, which seems like it is not at this point.

And what exactly South Korea going to do? The best thing they can hope for is to offer citizenship to Radionova.

That was Kurt Browning, wasn't it? His commentary was on point

How about tweeting? The ISU can't remove those.

Nobody cares about your whining. Don't waste the web space. Just give it up. Adelina is the new queen.

You think that because a lot of GS posters are reluctant to confront Yuna fans. There are people who are outraged, but there are a lot who aren't. Simply put, on this night Yuna needed 7 triples.

Go back and read the real-time comments in the Ladies Free Skate thread. Do the same on other skating forums. Do the same on non-skating forums where people were following the results in real time. Listen to Kurt Browning and Katerina Witt. Listen to the entire CBC, BBC, German, Italian, Japanese broadcast teams. Go out and ask people on the street what they think. The entire thing is a farce, and people do not consider figure skating a legitimate sport. If this goes unchallenged, just wait until next year's world championships, or nationals. Wait for another round of articles detailing how empty the arenas are. Continue to live in denial, and read more articles longing for 6.0 and inaccurately believing that's why nobody likes figure skating anymore.

The reason people don't like figure skating and its popularity has dropped to nothing, is because of the cheating and corruption. The sport has turned into a joke. A complete and total farce.

i think you are using the argument that it was not a conspiracy, which is a valid argument, to invalidate that the scoring was unfair/was correct. I presented a question to you before - either you believe the judging was correct, or that there was a lean to Adelina. Not just Adelina, but Yulia as well. What is your position on it?

I think there was a lean towards Adelina and Julia. I think so only because of the audience support. I thought there was a lean in Michelle over Irina in the SP in 2002, where Sasha (as a total no name skater) earned 3 ordinals over Irina. I thought there was a lean in Kaetlyn over Akiko at SC last year. Again, I'm generally ok with it not because I think it's fair, but because the judges are human beings and asked to evaluate so many things in seconds that the results are never going to be 100% what we think they should be with days of reflection.

While most of Yuna fans are driving the discussion, the discussion is not solely about Yuna should have won - it is about whether or not Adelina was judged fairly. If someone else had skated exactly what Yuna did (mental exercise), those fans would be driving the discussion (and if it were a US skater, would have had a lot more support here). It's not about Yuna. Yuna fans are just the most incensed about it because they have a horse in the race. The data is still there regardless. Carolina fans have just as much argument, but are less present on these boards apparently

That was Kurt Browning, wasn't it? His commentary was on point

Who was the Canadian lady that said "This woman has no equal!" Loved that comment. Tour de force. Then Kurt's comments.

Kurt Browning is a man with real integrity. Bravo to him for speaking up like a real man with honor and championing fair competition and results.

Shame on Scott Hamilton and his hypocrisy. His own gold medal is now shamed, and he will never have anything on Kurt. Kurt is the real champion in life between those two.

See, statements like this make it clear that you Yuna fans are pouting over a result you don't like.

No, my comments address the following inconsistencies in Hamilton's on-air commentary:

(paraphrasing)

2010: Evan Lysacek deserved to win because he was a complete skater with higher components, Plushenko just did crossovers and jumps

2014: Adelina deserved to win because she had the best jumps

That's outright hypocrisy and ethically dubious as a broadcaster. Further, his integrity was compromised by failing to mention Yuna's harder jumps in the short program. And he looked like even less of an expert by trying to narrow the entire competition down to one statistical category, the equivalent of saying the team with the most rebounds deserves to win the basketball game.

Scott's comments ring of someone who is trying to validate results after the fact, rather than present critical analysis. It lacks all integrity, and my comments are justified.
