The Judging Controversy Thread

ladyepheu,

thanks again for the crazy detail. if you notice people not responding it's because they've got no rebuttal for it lol. people in the know (i don't consider myself one), really seem to know something is amiss. it doesn't have to be a conspiracy for it to have been unfair judging.

To clarify, I completely disagree about anything the rest are talking about, about banning Russia, avoiding this or that or whatever. It's total nonsense and completely takes away from the discussion

Perhaps the ISU should allow skaters/judges to represent individual states in the U.S. and Canada. Fair is fair, ain't it?

I agree that the Soviet Union (and East Germany) had excellent athletes. Post-Soviet Russia has been, however, inconsistent at best. And really, in judged sport, a panel that include Slovakia-Russia-Ukraine-Estonia personnel should be avoided.

Did you realize the countries you listed have literally NOTHING in common? Different governments, traditions and languages. What school were you going to?

I don't know which Asian countries you have in mind, but if I recall my history classes they were not under the banner of a same national flag.

Slovakia was never under the Soviet flag. Should a SVK judge be forbidden from serving on the same panel with a CZE judge? TPE with CHN?

How far back in history should we look for common flags? Lifetime of the judges in question?

I for one cannot wait to read the articles next year at worlds and nationals.

"Figure skating down and out, scoring system to blame"

"Empty arenas, fans won't watch because of scoring system"

Uh, no. People don't care about figure skating because they know it's not a real sport, because it's corrupt and rigged and the federations don't care to fix it.

It's just been reported that ISU IT staff have been busy deleting thousands of comments from their website and social media pages.

No doubt they have employees posting messages on forums like this one as well.

Considering the fact that a lot of the messages on the ISU Facebook were calling Adelina and the ISU names like "dirty cheat" and worse as opposed to legitimate criticism of the skating, this is not surprising.

Not to mention, some ex-Soviet countries like Ukraine have a substantial amount of anti-Russian sentiment, as evidenced by the pro-EU/anti-Yanukovich protests in Kiev that has been happening for the past few weeks.

Oh.. i forgot the guts argument. Skating your personal best, and wanting a medal does not result in you deserving the medal or 99% of skaters out there would be champions.
This is what baffles me, too. Especially those from TV personas. They have been competitors themselves, and they should know better that just about every skater give their all in the Olympic rink. "Adelina gave the moment," "She had the audience," etc. whatever. That may be true but that has little to do with the scores. Everyone does (or tries to do) their best. Scores are given on that assumption. No judge would think "Oh, she doesn't do her best so I should give her lower marks."

LMFAO. Only in Sochi can you hug a judge after helping you steal a gold medal. When do u ever see an athlete hug a judge after a competition. Only in Russia. Thank u Adelina for showing us the judging culprit(s)who conspired with u to steal the gold medal from Yuna. Your performance was Bronze worthy at best..and the gold medal u hang around your neck will always be associated controversy. In the eyes of the world... We know who really won the competition. Long live Queen Yuna!

I am staying put to see how this board evolve. If this board becomes unbearable I shall leave skating along with the rest of the world.

I don't think anyone would complain about moderating obscene comments, but I know many legitimate comments against the ISU (not Adelina) were disappeared.

i highly doubt this will be the case

Fun to re-read the universal disgust at the judging in the Ladies Free Skate thread, starting on page 70:

http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?49008-2014-Olympics-Ladies-Free-Skate/page70

Almost without exception, posters reacted with disgust, shock, outrage, etc. towards the judging. Even long-time posters, non-Yuna and Caro fans, it was across the board. Not only on GS, but other skating forums, other sports forums, social media, another site, everywhere nearly all people immediately saw with their own eyes the rigged judging was taking place, starting with Julia's score and progressing from there.

I started doing it now and it is indeed fun!

And pro-Russian sentiment, too. Hence, the conflict. The cheating Ukrainian judge previously represented the USSR. I would say he has a close tie with Russia, in all likelihood. I don't know about the other non-Russian judges, but if they were around in the Soviet era, they probably stick together, too. BTW, Slovakia didn't exist in the Soviet era, but its people lived under the Soviet flag.

I don't think anyone would complain about moderating obscene comments, but I know many legitimate comments against the ISU (not Adelina) were disappeared.

Do you really think people like Ottavio Cinquanta or David Dore or anyone important is in charge of moderating and posting on the ISU's social media pages? Knowing Cinquanta, I doubt he even knows the ISU Facebook page exists. If you've ever worked or interned at an organization like the ISU, it's very likely that it's some lower-level staff member or intern who handles the day-to-day stuff on social media accounts. Given that the sheer volume of nasty, vicious comments outnumbered the number of legitimate comments (I was on the ISU Facebook page a couple days ago and from what I saw, the comment sections were a big mess), I can only assume that the poor intern in charge of moderating the ISU social media sites just started deleting comments en masse as opposed to parsing through each individual comment for legitimate discussion.

And this is what frustrates me about this whole thing--do I think that there are serious, legitimate issues with the judging of the ladies event? Yes, I definitely do. But it's hard to have any sort of proper discussion when amidst the deluge of name-calling, mud-slinging, ad hominem attacks, conspiracy theories and misinformation. What the crazy fans don't realize that is that all of their hysteria and personal attacks divert more and more attention away from the legitimate scoring issues, shifting the focus on specious issues like the unwarranted cyberbullying of Adelina, name-calling and conspiracy-mongering....none of which will convince the ISU (or anyone with an ounce of sense, really) to take this whole situation seriously.
