I know I've already congratulated you privately, but I thought I should repeat it on the public part of the forum.
You will make a great mother. I may only know you through an internet forum, but through your activity on it, I know that you are a very thoughtful, helpful and caring person. And those are the qualities that make a great parent.
Hey, you are already kind of a mother figure to all of us on the forum, and you are doing a great job at that. :agree:
Of course, raising a child is a little bit different (!) But, trust me, you'll be perfect for it.
A few of the members have been discussing baby names. I don't want to make any suggestions for given names, as I feel that is a personal discussion that should take place within the family.
But, I do want to add something about surnames.
I have always liked the Spanish naming custom. They start with the given name(s), and are then followed by the father's surname AND the mother's surname.
So, for example, in figure skating we have:
Javier Fernández López
Javier Raya Buenache
Sonia Lafuente Martínez
Marta García Orge
Sara Hurtado Martín / Adrià Díaz Bronchud
The Portuguese naming custom is similar, except that they have the mother's surname first, followed by the father's surname. For example:
Ayrton Senna da Silva (yes, Senna was the surname of Ayrton's mother)
What I like about these customs is that it is a lovely way of including both the parents are a permanent feature of their child's life.
Personally, I have often thought that using both surnames would be perfect for mixed-race families. It would be a good way of acknowledging the heritage of both sides of the child's family.
But, I will leave with one piece of advice. Whatever you and your husband decide with regards your child's name, make sure it is something you both like!
All the best, and congratulations again to both you and your husband on your upcoming family life.
