Tonya Harding - here we go yet again...

Something

Hopefully I dont get bashed too bad for this, seeing as its my first post, but, for some reason, theres something I like about Tonya: she has drive. She wanted success, and she wasn't going to stop until she got it. Poor girl, chose to attack Kerrigan for it....but hey, she did what she thought she needed for success. If I was in that position, I'd do everything I can to be the worlds best, which she came relatively close to being. I just wouldn't wack a competitors knee. Atleast shes memorable.

You just wouldn't whack a competitors knee, nor did Tonya.

Exactly

Exactly! She didn't do it. And the only evidence that she knew about it is the word of the slim balls who did. She pleaded guilty to not turning her husband in when she realized he was involved. After the fact. Gee, I wonder if there's any connection between her mental illness and other problems with the poor treatment she's gotten from the number of people who tried and convicted her or something she didn't do, plus the USFSA's lifetime ban.

yes let's blame everyone else

because Tonya's not a big girl and can't take responsibility for any of her actions...

Not that I think there is no possibility that she wasn't, I really believe in this more.

:agree: as long as that is sarcasm to an existent.
I like her skating, but personality wise, you reap what you sow.

And "birds of a feather," she was involved with these "types" yet no one would think that she could be the same type of person?????

I don't think she was born dysfunctional, I think she learned from an early age to be dysfunctional. To me there is a difference. Not everyone is lucky enough to not come from a dysfunctional family. So do you beat her down into the ground for all her bad choices or do you have a little empathy for the pathetic person she's turning into???

That is very nice sentament, but those are not "shoes" I would choose to wear. And rarely do I have sympathy for someone who is pathetic. I didn't even feel sorry for myself when I was being a "bad seed." I understood that was my own fault / choice / mentality in need of change.

I can feel sorry for her, but that doesn't negate the fact I have something to feel sorry for her in the first place.

Survivor reference -
Rupert never won the "big one" but he still walked away with a million. If he blows it and does questionable activity with his money and fame, I will NOT feel sorry for him.

Tonya has had choices were others in a similar situation as described don't. IOW, Tonya has had choices, SHE has made bad ones, whether she is just giving into the world she is faced with OR even for not making steps tword a change and not giving up. I bet she doesn't want to feel responsible for her actions and would love to blame some other factor. But it comes down to destiny is self controlled ESPECIALLY when she has had so many opportunities that others wish they had and Tonya does not seem to capitalize for any duration.

I only say this from personal experience and observation. If you reserve yourself to "not being in control of your future" then you won't be. This comes from a guy who has been down her path, had her types of friends and influences. But I made a change. I still maybe "ruff around the edges" but I am not a vindictive and "scape goat hunter" as I was in my youth. If I can change without the opportunities Tonya has had, I see nothing holding her back. She needs to come to terms with what has happened in her past instead of averting it and blaming others, then she will a the very least have that spark of confidence and integrity she once had. I even saw it in her first boxing matches. She was a very fast swinger with good aim, lots of heart / integrity and then she realized she was not going to be the best because she couldn't take a punch or really land a good hook or uppercut with power. What it did to her boxing career I can understand her bowing out, but to not learn from the good??? Twice now - FS and Boxing, and she left all the "lessons" behind. ???

The analogy fits IMO - "Good at the speed bag, but the punching bag just never moved."

She has oppertunities, but it would seem it is her own doing that brings her down.

Maybe there is something I am unaware of and I am wrong. But at this point I don't see it in her even though I WANT TO.

I don't think she was born disfunctional, I think she learned from an early age to be disfunctional. To me there is a difference. Not everyone is lucky enough to not come from a disfunctional family. So do you beat her down into the ground for all her bad choices or do you have a little empathy for the pathetic person she's turning into???

As one who did come from a (highly) dysfunctional family, I can say that empathy only goes so far, Dee. She had many more chances to make a good life for herself than most of us poor white trailer trash ever get. (Sorry...my roots are showing.) She threw away every chance she got with both hands, how is our sympathy going to change that?
The woman seems to have a pathological need for attention. If she really was "tweaking", why didn't the cops take her in, seeing as meth is highly illegal? That's what this enquiring mind would like to know.

"Tweeking" is not always in reference to meth. It is similarly used in phases that also might use "freak'n" or "wigging out." Not always synonymous with "jones'n" or drug induced.

Also, little factoid, not all states (most acutely) do not arrest based on "under the influence." Something has to accompany the use - as in disrespectful / dangerous / disturbing behavior OR POSSESSION. Possession of drugs is illegal. Being on drugs and "not causing illegal activity" while on and not POSSESSING any is not illegal in most states.

That is why they can only bust the person "holding" or witnessed "selling / supplying" drugs. Being at a Grateful Dead of Phish concert and being stoned and orderly is not against the law. Only POSSESSION and SALE.

IOW, most cases, being stoned is not against the law, "holding the pipe" is though.

Now the name of that neurotic kid on South Park suddenly makes a lot more sense...

On other boards, I read reports from posters who were on various anti-allergy and/or asthma medications (it was also reported that Tonya was taking these) and had similar symptoms from drug interactions -- so maybe one reason the cop took her inside her home was that there was no basis for arrest.

To me, tweaking was taking something you have done, for instance and tweaking it to make it better.

My World Book, 1967, says "to seize and pull sharply with a twisting movement.

I have a hard time with what her predicaments are.

I had a hard life when I was young too. We were really poor and only knew our parents as screamers and whippers. So, I can feel for her in some ways and really think badly in other ways. I would never have done anything cruel to any one. So, in some ways I really feel sorry for her but also really hate how she turned out. One thing I couldn't understand was how she would say she is a Christian and wanted to be good but evidently it never lasted long. Now, I see I should have prayed for her and didn't. I feel badly that I didn't.

I actually do think that she had a lot to do with the whacking. If nothing else, I think she really knew what was going on. But - I also think that she was bullied into it and I, for one, don't handle bullies well at all. Although I would never have done anything like that.

There comes a time when someone has to just decide that they are going to turn around and then DO IT. Tonya's never shown any true desire to do so... she just keeps blaming someone else for her situation...

YES she was born into a crappy situation, but she has had and continues to have so many chances to 'make it out' and she just can't seem to do it. And maybe not *can't* but won't... why should she... as long as there is someone else to blame.

I'm not saying this isn't legit. Obviously the cops saw nothing illegal... but at the same time these threads with the whole 'Poor Tonya, she never had a chance' just get on my last nerve because we all have a chance we all have CHOICE... she made bad choices. And yes her family was a piece of work but she wasn't sheltered she saw and knew people who weren't and she saw what she could decide to be... and she chose to take the easy fast way, she CHOSE To hang out with the crowd she did...

I was a 'social outcast' my parents didn't have billions of dollars... but I'm not beating up a boyfriend with a hubcap... or wallowing in self pity over my life... yeah I have a great support system... but Tonya had one too that she failed to recognize, she had her team and she had her fans... and she pretty much let everyone down (whether or not you think she's guilty of any part of the whack, the rest of her life she's let herself down).

She could have proved everyone wrong, and she didn't... she and others can't keep blaming her 'bad fortune' on everyone around her. I don't care where you come from it's ultimately YOU who decides how your life turns out.

Irks

What really irks me is that the main stream media devotes such rare space to anything related to figure skating, but what made it was Tonya Harding's issues. Before that, it was whether or not it is appropriate to sing Christmas carols at a celebration attended by Sasha Cohen. Great. I suppose it could be worse. Big news for boxing are the scandels involving Tyson and Hollyfield...

I would never have done anything like that.
You just keep those prayers up Gr, I'm sure the good Lord hears you.. Meanwhile I'm going to head on over to U Tube and check out Tonya's incredable 3 axels. What a skater! Amazing.
