I'm assuming the no-spoilers curfew is over (it should be the competition has been over for over 72 hours).

If not then:

Okay, hearty congratulations to new world champion Miki Ando! Some will note that she won the competition without winning either the SP or LP (or qualifying round since there wasn't one).

Who was the last singles world champion to win without winning the SP or LP?

(and has a pair ever won the title without winning either section? what about dance?)

I cannot think of who the last singles skater could be.

I seriously doubt it has ever happened in Dance - since COP came in its about the first time any dancer switches place from round to round!

I know that Laetitia Hubert won the 1992 JUNIOR Worlds with a 3rd place short and a 2nd place long, but as far as the Senior level is concerned, I'd have to rut through my archives.... I'm not sure that it's ever been done, but that's just off the top of my head.....

Was Tara in the Lead after the SP at 1997 worlds?

I know that Kwan won the LP but was too far down after the short to pull off the win...i think that probably answers my own question that Tara was in the lead after the SP.

Can we have a clue...was it in the era of figures?

Ant

Congrats to Miki!!

I also found intersting that the higest number recorded for the Short Program was posted by Yu-Na, and the higest LP score in the same competion by Mao but neither of them won!

What about Todd eldredge at 1996 worlds...was he in first after the SP?

Ant

IIRC, Kulik was in first after the SP

Kwan was 3rd after the SP at Worlds in '00; and 2nd after the SP in '01. She won both events, but she won the free skate.

I think the last lady to win worlds without winning either the short or long programs was Jill Trenary in 1990. She did win figures, however.

Jan Hoffman won the 1980 world title, winning neither the short or the free. He did however, win figures.

As for pairs, looking back as far as 1980, I can't think of it ever happening.

The ordinals at the 1996 worlds were very strange, however. The pair that ended up in fourth place, Shishkova and Naumov, had four first places, but a majority of fourth places. Eltsova and Bushkov ended up winning on countback with a majority of second places.

I'm a self professed idiot when it comes to remembering past events, however, I believe that Maria B. won the 1999 world championships with two second place finishes... But of course, I could be totally wrong...

Yes I was thinking of Trenary, IIRC first in figures, 5th in the short and 2nd in the LP.

I wasn't sure about Hoffmann but I'm pretty sure that Poetzsch also won 1980 worlds (like the olympics) without winning the SP or LP.

Totally, LOL. She won both the short and the free. :)

yes the spoiler 'ban' is off... but that doesn't mean you can't still chat it up in teh world's folder.. :)

This doesn't surprise me and I am more than comfortable with these results. OK, brain on football due to another thread, but a team can win the first half of the game and still not win, same with the second half. I think that is totally acceptable and see it happen all the time. Just the same as a "team" can dominate the entire "game."

It not happening or it did happen show the sports nature of FS IMO. Got to keep your head in the game - the whole game. Either destroy their heart in the beginning or crush them in the end, play a smart game and use the outcomes to the best of your advantages, capitalize on "turn overs" etc...

However, a football team can't lose both halves and still win the game. But Miki Ando did. :)

... but that was a great worlds...
No no no! That was a terrible stupid bad stupid worlds. Michelle was so much better than everyone else that year (Tara had retired, Slutskaya had not yet risen to prominence) that all she had to do was show up for the coronation. She won every single event that she entered that year, going away.

But she came up sick, fell on her triple Lutz in the short and ended up in fourth. Since Michelle was "not in control of her own destiny," as they liked to say back then, all Maria had to do was skate a nice conservative performance and make sure she didn't fall to third in the free (I hate it when Michelle is not in control of her own destiny, like at Torino -- that sucks).

I couldn't believe it! Nine times out of ten we could absolutely count on Butyrskaya doing a couple of those stiff-legged falls. But no-o-o-o-o! She has to pick that moment to skate two spectacularly perfect programs and waltz of with Michelle's medal. ;)

So is the answer Eldredge in 1996 then? I thought that Stojko won the LP in Edmonton but he was in 4th or 5th after the SP because of a fall on the 3A?

Weren't eh oly competitions she did that year - Nationals and Worlds? I thought that was the first seasno she sat out the GP to think about her future and that prompted all of $peedy's hissy fit rules? I remember her not knowing who Malinina was going into worlds despite Malinina's dominance in the GP that year.

But she came up sick, fell on her triple Lutz in the short and ended up in fourth.

I thought she stepped out of the triple lutz and therefore had a turn between the lutz and toe-loop?

  There were some stiff legged jumps but no falls that day!
