Ellen Burka coached Petra Burka

Re: Trivial FS Pursuit

Doris is on a roll! Hey, what does the winner get anyway?

Re: Trivial FS Pursuit

1984 Scott Hamilton - Scott’s opening section was to the overture of Duke’s Guardian of the Light, Then the music changed into the slow haunting synthesizer sounds of Hiroshima’s Third Generation, Next came the “Emperor’s Waltz” a comedic section where Scott goofs around a bit with the music, Finally his program came to a close with the rousing music of Swan Lake

Re: Trivial FS Pursuit

Lobacheva and Averbukh, Turn Turn Turn

Protopopovs-didn't they skate to Moonlight Sonata?
Other things they skated to: Swan Lake and Meditation from Thais
Trouble is I don't remember which year they skated what, but I think Moonlight Sonata was either '64 or '68

Re: Trivial FS Pursuit

First of all you're unbelievable what you already listed for the music.

Well I have to look it up - might take a while. But perhaps someone else knows for sure (it's e.g. on the Magic memories on ice tape I think).

Lobacheva and Averbukh, Turn Turn Turn

That's one part of the music.... ;-)

Re: Trivial FS Pursuit

Just wanted to say that Doris was right once again. The Protopopovs used Moonlight sonata in 1968. :-)

(It was on that Magic moments tape...)

Re: Trivial FS Pursuit

A question from some pages ago: the previous name of Cup of Russia: could it be Moscow Skate?
I remember a FS calendar I had, with the dates of important competitions, and I think that was one of those. I may completely off track.

Re: Trivial FS Pursuit

EllenK got it-it was variously called Skate Moscow or Moscow News. It was one of the group of elite level international competitions that preceded GP. Like Skate America, it has moved around since GP was formed, but was and is the Russian elite level fall competition.

Soap Opera and Skating

When we think drama and skating, Nancy and Tonya come to mind, but a lot of skaters have not lived totally quiet lives.
All of the below skaters have been shown on TV and are either medallists in their country or world or Olympic medallists.

Who was arrested for burglary?
Who was arrested for shoplifting?
Who was arrested for a brawl with a bouncer?
Who was murdered?
Whose father was murdered?
Whose boyfriend was murdered?
Whose car was maliciously destroyed?
Who hired a bodyguard because of threatening letters?
Who is being investigated by the FBI?
Who died young of cancer?
What skater had breast cancer?
Who became an oncologist?
Who broke both legs at once?
Who sued a TV network and won?
Who was fascinated by Alcatraz?
Who changed his last name to please himself?
Who changed his first name to match his partner?
Who invented a substitute for shoe polish?
Who started a program where baseball and football teams competed against each other?
Who was severely assaulted in Central Park, NYC?

These are all fairly easy-5 points a piece.

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

I'm exhausted.........okay Berthe and Doris, looks like you each have about 4,000 points apiece........this is like watching a figure skating duel...........

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

"These are all fairly easy"

Ha! Easy for you to say.

Who was murdered? Kira Ivanova
Whose father was murdered? Liz Punslin (by her brother)
Whose boyfriend was murdered? Maria
Whose car was maliciously destroyed?Maria
Who is being investigated by the FBI? Marina
What skater had breast cancer?Peggy
Who changed his first name to match his partner?Rudy (Rudi)
Who started a program where baseball and football teams competed against each other? Dick

Wild Guesses:

Who was arrested for burglary? Wasn't Nicole charged with breaking and entering?
Who was arrested for shoplifting?Elaine Zayak?
Who was arrested for a brawl with a bouncer? Tatiana T was throw out of club in Malmo.
Who hired a bodyguard because of threatening letters? MK?
Who became an oncologist? Debi? I thought that both she and Tenley were surgions? Oh, what about on of the Haines. I thought that one became a doctor and one a Lawyer. I'm gonna say Hayes?
Who was severely assaulted in Central Park, NYC? Wasn't Chris Bowamn beat up in a park? Later it turned out to be a drug deal gone wrong, but wasn't it in Totonto?
Who died young of cancer? Define young. Angela's coach?
Who sued a TV network and won? Tonya? but that was the USFSA wasn't it?

No Idea, I give up:

Who broke both legs at once?
Who was fascinated by Alcatraz?
Who changed his last name to please himself?
Who invented a substitute for shoe polish?

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Who hired a bodyguard because of threatening letters?
Katarina Witt

Wild Guesses:

I thought B&E, but turns out the final charge was burglary because she took something or other. The case was dropped.

Who was arrested for shoplifting?Elaine Zayak? NOPE

Who was arrested for a brawl with a bouncer? Tatiana T was throw out of club in Malmo. YUP (The reason there was a newspaper article is that the police became involved).

Who hired a bodyguard because of threatening letters? MK?
NOPE

Who became an oncologist? Debi? I thought that both she and Tenley were surgions? Oh, what about on of the Haines. I thought that one became a doctor and one a Lawyer. I'm gonna say Hayes? NOPE but my oncologist does surgery. Interpretation of the term varies hospital to hospital.

Who was severely assaulted in Central Park, NYC? Wasn't Chris Bowamn beat up in a park? Later it turned out to be a drug deal gone wrong, but wasn't it in Totonto? NOPE Chris was beat up in Toronto but there was another skater beat up in NYC.

Who died young of cancer? Define young. Angela's coach? MAYBE She died, but that's not the one I meant. I'll get back to you with the age. If the person I'm thinking of is older than Angela's coach, whose name I can't spell, you get the points.

Who sued a TV network and won? Tonya? but that was the USFSA wasn't it? NOPE

No Idea, I give up: So these are still open:

Who broke both legs at once?

Who invented a substitute for shoe polish?
Who sued a TV network and won?

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

mpal2, Kat wasn't the person I was thinking of, but if it's true, you get the points.

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Boitano is fascinated with Alcatraz (and this was stated before Oz)

Was it Dick Button who sued a network??

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Liz's brother murdered their father? Was he mentally unstable? What happened?

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Boitano is right. 1988 puff piece prior to the skating on ABC showed him musing about Alcatraz. JockProf gets the points.

Elena Tcherkassiakaya (spelling horrible. Angela's coach) was 64 when she died, so she isn't acceptable for the died young of cancer question. The person I am asking looking for died within 12 years of the end of her amateur career.

If Dick sued, I am not aware of it.

Yes, Liz's brother is mentally unstable. I am not sure what the diagnosis is, but perhaps schizophrenia?

dpp

Still open:

Who broke both legs at once?
Who changed his last name to please himself?
Who invented a substitute for shoe polish?
Who sued a TV network and won?
Who died young of cancer?
Who hired a bodyguard because of threatening letters?

What was Debi Thomas's license plate at the time of the 1988 Olympics.

And there is a question of berthe's ghost about an Olympic gold medallist coaching another gold medallist that is still open
answer isn't Heiss/Goebel-hegot bronze.

and a sister coaching a world gold medallist that I think are still open. (answer isn't Rudi, he got bronze)

And these two are driving me nuts
