According to Japanese sources, 22 cameras will be simutaneously directed at skaters such as Mao Asada, Miki Ando etc to broadcast the world championships in Tokyo. 15 cameras will be used to provide live coverage signals to TV stations overseas, the other 7 will focus on back-stage, warm-up areas. Fuji TV intends to add one more camera to the final gala event.

Gosh, Can Mao Asada stand the burden of 22 cameras? Japanese media is insane.

I think she's pretty much used to them at this point.

Seriously though, I wish the skaters could have a moment of privacy at least backstage. There were times when I felt that the cameramen just did not have a grain of common sense left. It's one thing to show a skater practicing or fooling around, but showing such scenes as noisy clearing of one's nose (Mao, Miki and Takahashi with their flus and colds at GPF) or a nervous breakdown (Nobunari at Skate Canada 05 after SP, wanted to hide backstage but the camera followed him anyway) are not necessary.

That sounds out of control to me. But ITA that the Japanese skaters are used to that kind of coverage. I would find it distracting.

wow! the jajpaense press is really being vicioius! I don't see the point of bashing sasha when she is posing no threat to mao at this point. I feel for Mao and Miki being pressured like this and set up to win.

The closeups of Miki and the pix of Mao's Biellmann are fantastic. Too bad they are part of such an annoying website (to put it mildly). The popups are maddening and the captions (thanks for the warning to skip the comments; I did)... just cheap.

P.S. Re "22 cameras" - if the Japanese skaters can handle this pressure while skating up to their potential, they really are champions. I hope they're doing OK.

I think many of the captions are frickin'

I was brave enough to go on to the comments...they're a mixed bag, actually.

They made it look as if Miki and Mao won gold and silver at Skate America. Not so. Miki did win gold, but KIMMIE won silver and Mao barely edged Sarah Meier for bronze. In case anyone didn't notice, SASHA COHEN wasn't even there!

Although Japanese media certainly is insane, the Japanese themselves might want to watch Mao on TV. If so, it seems that the Japanese are, as it were, kiddies. In other words, supply and demand.
