I've been watching the U.S. Gymnastics Championships today and I am just a little confused. It keeps saying that the top 12 ladies from this competition will be eligible for the 2004 Olympic Team. However, there is also an Olympic Trial event afterward. How does this work? Who goes to the Olympic Trials? And, can the selection committee choose any athlete they want regardless of these results? Thanks for any info!

I cant believe I missed it!!! I had been meaning to watch it or set it up on my dvr!!!! Bah Humbug.

Liz,

I believe they are showing the final phase tomorrow. Today was only the first half of the men and women's competitions.

But, it should be very exciting. Today certainly was exciting. Casey Patterson (who I believe is the 2003 World All-Around Silver Medalist) was in 7th place after the first 2 rotations! But, she had a spectacular balance beam routine and a solid floor exercise and was able to move up to 2nd right behind the reigning U.S. Champion. I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow. That Kupets (sp?) girl that is in the lead has been so solid on everything.

Alright! Mohini Bhardwaj made it on the top 12. I thought she had completely retired from gymnastics two years ago.

Don't think Tasha Schwikert made it:cry:

Carly Patterson and Courtney Kupets looked fantastic.

Whatever happened to Morgan White? She was a stocky blonde with a baby face on her. She was in our last Olympics but I believe she got hurt during the Games.

I am pleased to see healthy-looking girls and not the anorexic look of the early 90s. These girls look fit, not like they are about to pass out from not eating. During one Olympic trial long ago I saw one girl who was so obviously anorexic/bulimic that people watching with me gasped. Her body was covered with a fine hair, her Adam's apple was sticking out, her face was very gaunt and her ribs were protruding. Ugh

I was just thinking, there really isn't a lot of gymnastics on television anymore, like there was more in the late 80's through the 90's. A whole hour today dedicated to national championships?? Oh wow, I hope they didn't hurt themselves! It's sad, because it's such an incredible sport. I really hope figure skating never fades away that much.

Here is an interesting article about the depth of the US field... it also talks about the improvements they have tried to make since not medaling in a single gymnastics event in syndney 2000. (thanks for the correction pixie)

I dont know much about how it works, but I think that the trials are going to be televised on saturday the 26th.

US Nationals were being used to not only crown the National Champion (or in the case of the women, champions!) but also to determine which twelve girls advance to the US Olympic Trials at the end of June. I am not quite sure how the men's team works (its a tad bit different than the ladies) but from that group of twelve will emerge our US Olys team and three alternates. This group will now attend another camp between Nats and Trials and then they get to compete ALL over again the weekend of June 25-27th (I think those dates are right). After that competition will be when they announce who made the Olys team. Marta and her committee are trying to form the strongest team for the USA and they are using competitions such as Nats and Trials to see how they do under pressure and the camps to see how they train and work every day. Its quite a different process and ultimately, its really to produce the best team possible for the USA. Of course it also leaves us all REALLY hanging as to who makes the team but honestly, I can see how the real pressure for these girls is right now. The Olys will be a breeze after going through this long selection process!! LOL :D

And I was thrilled to see Carly and Courtney tie for first today. That was so stellar. I like them both so that worked well for me. I am amazed at how Courtney has come back from her injury and Carly has just blossomed into a beautiful gymnast. She seems so much older than just last year at Worlds! I was also happy to see Terin Humphrey do so well and Courtney McCool was quite impressive. I was also thrilled (even though NBC was a tool and didn't show her) that Mohini Bhardwaj made it to Trials! I've been enjoying her gymnastics since she competed for UCLA. She's wonderful too. Wow, I can't wait to see what happens at Trials. That is going to be one heck of a competition! :D

Stocky? You must be thinking of someone else. Morgan White was stick thin. Anyway, she just kept having one injury after another.

I am very impressed with our ladies' team. I had never seen Cortney McCool before; I love her style.

Yep, it was Morgan. Too bad she got injured over and over. What a cutey she is, and talented. I found a somewhat recent photo of her and she appears to have grown several inches.

Our men's team will also be deep. I saw that Jason Gaston is also back! Woo hoo!

I like to see what Amy Chow is up to, or at least an update of the Magnificent Seven from Atlanta.

^^^I am sure we will get some random fluff piece at some random point during the Athens Olys coverage from NBC called "The Mag Seven: Where are they now?!?" With our teams so strong this year, they have all ready been talking about teh Mag Seven. It WILL happen, here comes the fluff! LOL :D

And Morgan was wonderful. Too bad she got injured right before the Olys and couldn't compete. I was SO bummed for her. :(

Count me as another fan of Mohini. I thought she had quit a couple of years ago too and was thrilled to see her and even more thriled to see her make the top 12.

You know, the Mag 7 was the first team since the late '60s where the coaches (or most of the coaches) said, "Enough of this anorexia and bulimia! Gymnasts need to be lean, but not skeletal." And that '96 team was indeed the "heaviest" women's team at the Olympics. But their percent body fat was appropriately low, their muscle mass was appropriately high, and overall they look healthy and fit. What I don't understand is why between 1996 and 2000, the USWGA regressed to "thin, thin, thin" when the obviously more muscular team of '96 did so amazingly well? Whatever the case, I hope coaches and parents (and the girls themselves) don't ever go back to the too thin, eating-disordered ways of years past.

I find women's gymnastics so much more beautiful to watch when the girls/women look as strong as they are.

About the decline of gymnastics on TV: JMO, but I think some of it has to do with the changes in the COP. That is, the more spectacular looking stunts and beautiful dance movements on the floor, beam, and uneven bars have been replaced by much more difficult but not so exciting to watch for the average viewer. Also, there's no longer the Cold War element to gymnastics. In the '60s, '70s, and most of the '80s, there was such a big deal about who mght beat the teams from the Soviet countries. Finally, we haven't had anything close to a real gymnastics "star" since Shannon Miller, and she never wanted to be a star gymnast. I find her personality much more open and interesting since she quit gymnastics. Don't get me wrong, I was thrilled to tears when she won the gold on the beam in '96, but Shannon didn't have the personality of a Mary Lou Retton and in sports I think that can affect popularity.

I too hope things don't get that bad for skating, but you never know. ABC has already decided that ESPN can handle 98% of figure skating and NBC does the Olympics. As they say, we'll see.

I really enjoyed watching the US Championship last weekend! The depth of the women's field is phenomenal! I am bummed that they show ZERO of the Men's competition! Hopefully both mens/womens Olympic Trials will be televised.

Favorite moments:
Courtney McCool's bar routine from Day 2
C. Patterson's floor routine Day 2
C. Kupets beam routine both days--love how she works the beam!
C. Pattersons reaction when she realised that she and Courtney Kupets tied! That was priceless!

I cannot believe that Carly Patterson does a double arabian dismount off the beam! Incredibly difficult!

I wish they aired more gymnastics. They seem to air a good amount of NCAA Womens gymnastics on the cable stations.

I wish after the Mag 7 they had done things differently--they tried to "popularize" gymnastics by making it showy. Programs like "Rock N' Roll Gymnastics" were created and IMO just awful. I think the better route to go was more towards professional competitions--legitimate competitons! I would have loved to see favorites like Dominique Dawes, Lilia Podkopeeva (sp?), Shannon Miller, Gina Godgean competing against each other in a professional setting. Also it would have prolonged careers, given gymnastics more focus, as well as given a different environment for someone like Vanessa Atler to compete.

Actually, they showed about 0.01% of the Men's competition on the Saturday broadcast. They talked a little bit about Blaine Wilson sitting out the competition and petitioning into the Olympic Trials. He needed more time for his injury to heal. They showed some highlights of Paul Hamm and some of the other top finishers. It took all of about 5 minutes.

I enjoyed the ladies competition as well. My favorite moment was on Saturday when showed Tabitha Yim's floor routine. Her music was the same slow blues piece that Lucinda Ruh and Usova/Zhulin have skated to. I think it's called Blues for Klook and I would love to find a CD with that piece.

Is "Rock N' Roll Gymnastics" even done anymore?
Haven't seen it in a couple of years. Maybe if some new stars come out of Athens it will be resurrected (Although I hope it won't!)

They did show the Men? Damn! I Tivo'd it and it must have gone over time or something because the Sat. broadcast cut out smack in the middle of Allyse Ishino's floor routine.

Looking forwards to the trials!
