North Atlantic Regionals-Report on Senior Ladies Short
A few warnings in advance: I don't have the eye for this sort of thing; I can't even tell jumps apart. And I only decided to do this report around the third skater, so didn't take proper notes for the first two. The senior ladies short took place this afternoon starting at a little past 2 PM Eastern. 19 girls were scheduled in, but three withdraw very shortly before the event began. Notes in order of skating:
1. Christine Caucci (BC Winter Club)-Skated to Romeo and Juliet-very Shakespearian pale blue costume. Was very clearly nervous the entire time, to the point that it interfered with her skating, probably costing her on most of the elements, definitely on the step sequence, and she fell on the final jump. 11.34 technical score and 12.70 program components, with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 23.04.
2. Kristen Beatty (Atlantic City Figure Skating Club, Inc.)-Skated to Fiddler on the Roof, mostly the wedding dance, black and white dress. Unfortunately without notes all I remember is being very underwhelmed, and a possible double-foot at some point. The judges agreed: 9.99 technical score and 8.24 program components for a total score of 18.23
3. Marlana Cole (Amherst Skating Club, Inc.)-Skated to some sort of classic techno remix, mostly white dress. Has trouble landing the second jump in her combo and fell on the other two. Finished behind the music. 10.64 technical score and 12.45 program components with a 2.00 deduction for a total score of 21.09.
4. Ryan Coombs (Jamestown Skating Club)-Black and white dress, popped both the jumps in her combo, seemed to be going for a higher level in her step sequence but as a result said sequence was very slow. But she did fairly well: 13.49 technical score and 15.25 program components for a total score of 28.74.
5. Jessica Crenshaw (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.)-Dress in white, fell twice and finished behind the music. Did show some flexibility in the spiral sequence and transitions, but did not extend it to the spins as much as one would hope. 12.67 technical score and 14.90 program components with a 2.00 deduction for a total score of 25.57.
6. Allison Heimler (Cantiague Figure Skating Club, Inc.)-Skated to Yello dressed as a racer. Very fully-formed idea in the program, but she fell on two jumps, missed her combo, and fell out of the last jump. 8.10 technical score and 15.30 program components with a 2.00 deduction for a total score of 21.40.
7. Allison Krein (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.)-Skated to Trevor Rabin's score from Remember the Titans, blue dress with silver lines. Fell on one jump and had to hold onto another, and she had a weird moment in her step sequence where I think she placed her toepick wrong. 17.07 technical score and 16.90 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 31.47.
8. Karli Miller (The Skating Club of Lake Placid)-Wore a pink and white dress. Looked like she was struggling on all her jumps, scrunched up her combo and then fell on the second jump anyway, traveled a bit on the spins, all the while looked anxious and unhappy. Not fun to watch at all. 12.15 technical score and 8.92 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 20.07.
9. Joelle Forte (The Skating Club of New York, Inc)-Red dress with silver decorations. Good spins, a better step sequence, her jumps were beautiful and she was this close to a perfect program when she suddenly slipped on her final spin. Even then very nearly avoided falling; I waited until the scores were posted to guess on whether she would be judged as having fallen or not. 24.75 technical score and 18.85 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 42.30.
10. Jennifer Milton (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.)-Black dress with silver dots and other sequin decorations. Fell on her first jump, double-footed another, and had to hold on to a third, and was unable to complete her combo, but really good spins. 9.37 technical score and 13.75 programs components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 22.12.
11. Jessica Morgan (Rye Figure Skating Club, Inc.)-Wore a weird black thing trimmed with red beading. Fell once, nearly fell again, and missed her combination. 12.22 technical score and 14.20 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 25.42.
12. Stephane Roth (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.)-Skated to Once Upon a Time in Mexico, sleeveless black shirt with blue, green, and purple pattern, black pants. Did spins and spirals that were harder than most of the other girls', but suffered a rough fall on her third jump. 21.90 technical score and 17.55 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 38.45.
13. Crystal Kiang (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.)-Was the second girl in this championship to suffer the "Malaguena Curse": having chosen to skate to this music they started up the wrong music when it came time for her to skate!(the other girl was an intermediate). Wore a black and red dress. Double-footed one jump and fell out of another, but good spins and spirals, and she sold the program for all it was worth. 17.07 technical score and 16.90 program components for a total score of 33.97.
14. Milakirstie Kulsa (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.)-Skated to John Powell's Assassin's Tango, black dress. Put both her hands down on the second jump in the combination and had to fight for another jump. Very seductive step sequence, though the difficultly was another issue. Had two young female fans who had to be shushed when her program began! 12.67 technical score and 14.90 program components for a total score of 28.42.
15. Elizabeth Stern (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.)-Skated to Indian music, wore a blue two-piece with a lot of gold trimmings. Double-footed a jump in her combination and had to hold on to a landing on another jump, but sure could spin fast. 22.24 technical score and 16.95 program components for a total score of 39.20.
16. Marley Strauss (Rye Figure Skating Club, Inc.)-Skated to Maxim Mrvinca medley, black and white dress. Fell on two of her jumps and missed her combination. 14.20 technical score and 15.50 program components with a 2.00 deduction for a total score of 27.70.
