US Regionals and Sectionals

North Atlantic Regionals-Report on Senior Ladies Long

I tried to keep track of triple jumps this time, but I might have missed a couple. Note that one girl withdrew before the draw. Notes in order of skating:

1. Marlana Cole (Amherst Skating Club, Inc.), 14th after the Short-Skated to The Mission wearing pale blue. Technically a very easy program, but still a possible double-foot, and definitely popped a jump near the end. Her final spin was slightly harder than the rest of the program. 20.51 technical score and 26.02 program components for a total score of 46.53.

2. Allison Heimler (Cantiague Figure Skating Club, Inc.), 13th after the short-Dressed in pink. Fell twice but nearly avoided it the first time. Not as fully-formed an idea as her short, but still had good transitions and spins, if a slow step sequence. 20.97 technical score and 25.00 program components with a 2.00 deduction for a total score of 43.97.

3. Kristen Beatty (Atlantic City Figure Skating Club, Inc.), 16th after the short-Wore mostly white with black and silver. I'm not sure she landed a clean jump. There was one moment where she might have failed to jump all together, then there were two double-foots, a step-out, and a fall-out. Her layback wasn't very good either. 9.84 technical score and 20.82 program components for a total score of 30.66.

4. Karli Miller (The Skating Club of Lake Placid), 15th after the short-Black sparkly dress, her music sounded like Hans Zimmer. Had to hold on to two combos then double-footed both jumps in a combo. When she nearly fell out of a spin and then really did fall, she started looking very unhappy again, and on her last spin she almost didn't try. When it was over she looked very relieved. 14.96 technical score and 22.51 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 36.47.

5. Christina Caucci (BC Winter Club), 11th after the short-Skated to West Side Story wearing pink. Her jumps in general weren't very pretty and one was double-footed and the penultimate one looked better, but she again fell on the final jump. There was an odd moment on her final spin too where I think she accidentally put her foot down, and another when she bumped into the barrier! She had good choreography and looked more comfortable than Friday, but her levels were still low. 18.43 technical score and 25.93 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 43.36.

6. Jessica Morgan (Rye Figure Skating Club, Inc.), 10th after the short-Wore a sparkly dress of pale and dark purple. She popped three jumps, stepped out of a third, fell on a fourth, and there was another one with a touchy landing, and as a result she didn't do any combos. 16.40 technical score and 25.81 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 41.21.

7. Milakurstie Kulsa (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.), 7th after the short-Her music sounded Eastern, wore a purple dress with a *lot* of silver embroidery. Very graceful skater and jumper; she double-footed one jump and stepped out on another but you doubted your eyesight for a moment on both. Extremely expressive at first, but she wasn't able to keep it up, and she traveled on the final spin and finished behind the music. 27.45 technical score and 30.92 program components for a total score of 58.37.

8. Marley Strauss (Rye Figure Skating Club, Inc.), 8th after the short-Skated to Japanese music with vaguely Japanese deep blue costume with a flower pattern. She fell hard on her first two jumps and I think missed a combo. On her second combo she popped she first jump and took a step between the two jumps. Then she popped another jump and double-footed its landing. Her spins looked rough too. 17.86 technical score and 27.61 program components with a 2.00 deduction for a total score of 43.47.

9. Jessica Crenshaw (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.), 9th after the short-Skated to Phantom of the Opera, and her black and white with some leopard-print costume was ugly. She fell on her first jump and slipped slightly on her first spin, though her second spin was good. After a hand down on another jump she managed a combo but both jumps were rough and the second was double-footed. When she fell again on her final jump she just seemed to lose confidence all together and the step sequence and final spin that followed weren't pretty. Had some difficult hydroblading transitions though. Unfortunately for some reason I only recorded a 20.75 which I *think* was her technical mark and a total score of 49.14, which with a 2.00 deduction would make the other mark 30.81.

10. Ryan Coombs (Jamestown Skating Club), 6th after the short-Skated to Love Story dressed in pink. She stepped out of one jump, fell on another, and had to hold on to a third, and between all this only managed one combo. Again I failed to record a mark; her total score was 49.19 and she had a 20.33 mark which was probably her technical mark, and with a 1.00 her second mark would be 29.86.

11. Stephanie Roth (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.), 3rd after the short-Skated to Pirates of the Caribbean dressed as a Tortuga wench. Fell on one jump, but I'm fairly certain she performed two triples, one in combination, and had three combos besides. Her jumps were very powerful, but she skated with more power than speed; her spins were slow and she almost finished behind the music. 41.23 technical score and 37.91 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 78.14.

12. Elizabeth Stern (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.), 2nd after the short-Skated to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, wearing a black and red ninja-esque shirt and leggings. She had to hold on to the first jump in her first combo and her second combo was even more wobbly, but had three jumps in it. She double-footed another jump and at one point just fell out of nowhere. Strong spins. 27.94 technical score and 34.71 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 61.65.

13. Joelle Forte (The Skating Club of New York, Inc), 1st after the short-Skated to Madame Butterfly. Fell on her first jump, then landed a triple toe(I think!) on two feet. Performed three combos with the third having three jumps, though she had to hold on to the final jump there. Fell on her first attempt to enter her first spin, but her spins were very good after that. 36.78 technical score and 35.20 program components with a 2.00 deduction for a total score of 70.98.

14. Crystal Kiang (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.), 4th after the short-After suffering from the "Malaguena" curse described Friday, skated to Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, putting her in company with the Novice Ladies champion, *three* other Novice Ladies, and I think a Junior Lady as well(they were Scheherazade happy here in Amherst:laugh:). Not that it stopped her from selling the program hard. Wore a red and orange two-piece with gold embroidery. Her jumps were a little rough; she had to hold on to one, stumbled on her first combo, and double-footed what looked like at least an attempt at a triple. Her second two combos were more successful; the second one had what looked like a clean triple and the third had three clean jumps. Her spins were probably the best of the night. Had the most fans in the audience, all of them yelling "Go, Crys-tal!" until it got annoying. 31.74 technical score and 35.50 program components for a total score of 67.24.

15. Allison Krein (The Skating Club of New York, Inc.), 5th after the short-Wore a black dress with white sparkles. Landed what might have been a slightly wobbly triple toe, but put both a hand and a foot down on her second combination, popped two combinations, and fell on her final spin. 29.41 technical score and 31.61 program components with a 1.00 deduction for a total score of 60.02

16. Jennifer Milton (Withdrawn-22.12)

So Stephanie Roth recovers to reclaim the gold, and Joelle Forte, Crystal Kiang, and Elizabeth Stern will accompany her to Eastern Sectionals. Though I thing the real person to look out for from North Atlantics there will be aforementioned Novice Ladies champion, Felicia Zhang, who by the end of qualifying was labeled "Most Likely to Make it St. Paul" and cleared 100 with her final score, and deservedly so.

Rohene skated very well tonight. His “Dragon” program is the epitome of “Rohene-esque”artistry; amazing jumps and creative transitions. He has the ability to stir the audience’s emotions, then transport them to a place they’d never been … since the last time they saw him skate!

Rohene landed (in order) 4T+2T; 3A+3T; 3F; 2A; 3T; 3Lo; 3Lz fall; 2S. The 4T+2T was supposed to be a 4T+3T, but he was so close to the boards, it wound up missing one revolution! He fell on his last jump, but finished with level 4 on three of his spins!

As if this near-record setting performance wasn’t enough, Rohene also coached Kirsten Olson to the top of the Jr. Ladies event. “Way to kick some butt Ro!” And I, for one, applaud your success!

THANKS for the report!!!!! This is awesome news (on the competition and coaching fronts), I'm so excited!!! Any chance you know what his marks were???

Thanks for taking the time to share your impressions, MissIzzy! It's too bad that Chloe Katz (who is a national senior pair skater with Joseph Lynch) withdrew from the Senior Ladies event here -- Katz skated very well to win the Senior Ladies event at Skate Detroit back in July and would have been one of the favorites to qualify for Eastern Sectionals had she skated at Norths.

Yes, Felicia Zhang is a beautiful and balletic skater. I've seen her short program to music from "The Last Emperor" soundtrack that showcases a vertical Biellmann spin (including a one-handed version) and a back Charlotte spiral. I'm not sure she currently has the difficult jumps (triples) to qualify for Nationals, however. The Novice Ladies final round is often one of the more competitive events to watch at Regionals and I'm glad you got to see this one at Norths.

Do you have any additional comments on the skaters below senior level?

Thanks! I cannot wait for this to get on icenetwork!

Videos of Regionals are up on Ice Network.

I was disappointed that no Men competed at Regionals anywhere in the country. Would have been nice to see the competition but I'll never complain about getting a bye...

It appears a lot are only SPs (like Upper Great Lakes Senior Men which is what I wanted to see). Hope they have the LPs soon!

There were/are Senior Men's Regional competitions in 3 out of the 9 U.S. regions:

Upper Great Lakes: Rohene Ward, Michael Peters

Southwesterns: Braden Overett, Casey McCraw

South Atlantics (6!): Shaun Rogers, Tommy Steenberg, Viktor Pfeifer (formerly represented Austria), Traighe Rouse, Michael Solonoski, Robbie Crowley.

***However, the following information was posted by someone attending NWP Regionals late Thursday night:
"The power is out at the main rink for NWP Regionals. So far, Novice ladies groups a and b have been combined into one, so there will be no qualifying round. Novice SP will be at the other rink (Lynnwood Ice Arena) as well as other qualifying events until power is restored."

I think this will be Megan Williams Stewart's best year, what ever that may be.

Hoping Braden Overett gets into Nats with a great Sectionals.

Joe

Question, Is Katy Taylor competing in any Regionals or Sectionals? I haven't seen her name anywhere lately.

Katy Taylor and Christine Zukowski both are not competing this season -- neither competed in their Regionals which took place this past week (Southwestern and South Atlantic, respectively), which they had to do if they wanted to qualify for 2008 U.S. Nationals.

Although there has not been any kind of "official public announcement" made regarding Taylor, her athlete bio on the USFS site is no longer linked from the Team C envelope. Zukowski also is not competing this season due to a back injury (herniated disk) and her competitive skating future is uncertain. She may be planning to attend college next year and forego skating, but only time will tell.

Both Taylor and Zukowski have started their senior year of high school, and I hope they enjoy the experience to the fullest!

Comments/highlights/jump notes to come later when I get a chance to type some up.....

It looks as though that JGP sent Tommy a message. He did well but shouldn't the score be higher. I think minum score for men to be podium competitive is 140. Not sure.

Hope all the Sectionals go well, I want Tommy, Rohene and Braden definitely at US Nats. None of them are boring unless it's one of those horrible days.

Joe

Just watched Rohene's LP from UGL. I really enjoyed it, even with one fall and one pop. He still hit 4T-2T and 3A and other triples along with some interesting spins. Would love to see him skate well at Mids and make it to Nats!

My favorite male skater. Hope he settles in for Nationals at home.
