US Regionals and Sectionals

WCCO-TV, the local CBS affiliate in the Twin Cities, has a 2-minute news story video and transcript online at that focuses on a few of the Minnesota skaters going to Midwestern Sectionals in Michigan this week: http://wcco.com/sports/figure.skating.competition.2.564810.html

There are interview and skating clips of Kirsten Olson (a.k.a. "Nikki the jumping shrimp" in Disney's Ice Princess movie), Rohene Ward, Nicholas Krongard, and a brief shot of the new novice dance team of Stephanie Zastrow/Michael Lueck performing a lift.

Thanks for the link, Sylvia. I'm wishing all of these skaters a great skate! Can't wait to hear the details!

Ah! Didnt know where to put this exactly, but this seemed right. Midwestern sectionals, guess who's in a new pair? Kendra Moyle (formerly from Moyle/Seitz, which I loved) with Steven Pottenger (That name sounds familiar....another former pair, no?)

If this is old news, haha, sorry. =]

I know there is a Christopher Pottenger who skates with Kaela Pflumm.

Maybe Steven is his kid brother and has to skate seniors because of Kendra.

They are brothers - they've both been competing pairs for years. In 2003 Steven and Amy Howerton won juniors and Chris and Sydney Schmidt won novice.

Steven is the older one and competed at the senior level last year (with Stephanie Kuban).

Does anyone know the final results of the pacific coast sectionals. Ice network still hasn't updated :(.

Some Pacific Coast and Easterns Sectional videos have started to be uploaded on the official event/results pages at Ice Network.

Midwesterns videos have yet to be uploaded.

Top 4 in each Sectional event (or everyone if there are 4 or less in the event) qualify for 2008 U.S. Nationals.

I read somewhere that more than the top 4 men would go to Nationals as fillers. Is this true?

Ok, so I can be totally thrilled that Rohene Ward and Elliot H (I forget the rest of his last name) are both going to nationals??? !!!???? Oh, and congrats to all the tops 4 at all the sectionals - way to go!!!

Where did you read that? 12 senior men have qualified for Nationals (top 4 from each of the 3 Sectionals), plus 6 have byes to Nationals (Evan Lysacek, Ryan Bradley, Johnny Weir, Jeremy Abbott, Scott Smith and Stephen Carriere).

Yes, you can be thrilled :) (it's Eliot Halverson.)

I think there is something like the fill-up rule, as in if one Section has less than 4 skaters, the next few from other sections are allowed to go to Nationals, to have 12 skaters from Sectionals and the skaters who got a bye at Nationals. Basically, there are 12 skaters from Sectionals, whether it is 4 from each section or 2 from one (due to lack of skaters) and then 5 from each of the other two... but that's just what I recall hearing. Not sure about eactly how it works...

Emma - You must also see Braden Overett. I hope he made the Nats. He is a most unique skater in his non-showy style and technique. What I would call a Skater's Skater.

I will look forward to seeing Braden in whatever way - hopefully he will appear on YouTube videos. And if he made nationals - Congrats!!!!

I'm still over the moon happy about Rohene and Eliot - I can't wait for US nationals!

Thanks, I was wondering about Nicholas LaRoche?

Yes, he made Nats. And I agree with you. Definately a skater's skater. His LP last year at Mids blew the roof off the place.

I would like to see Braden get more exposure - maybe a 3rd place at Nats? but then Rohene would not get that and what about Carriere? Tough 3rd place spot at US Nats with Bradley, Abbott, and maybe Steenberg, Rippon.

Oh, I hope we get to see all of them somewhere. And just think, no repetitive spirals!

sk8addict - Trust me, Nicholas will give a great performance in the SP but for the LP, well.... you know the rest.

I finally got a chance to watch a couple of clips on icenetwork.com.

This is the first time I saw Nina Jiang. As a ten-year-old, she is pretty amazing. She is spunky. Her 2A is huge for such a little dynamo. She also nailed a beautiful 3S. Does anybody know whether this is her first triple in competition?

Can she win intermediate at Jr. Nationals based on her current technical content(3S and two 2A)?
