Toni, the town of Lebanon, Kansas, was named after the "Cedars of Lebanon," which are mentioned several times in the Bible (1 Kings 5:9, for instance). Solomon built the temple from this famous wood, which he had shipped by a sea route along the coast, then transported overland to Jerusalem.

Too bad Detroit isn't on your list. Detroit was the site of the original Garden of Eden (Geneis 2:10). The four "heads" into which the great river was gathered is the Great Lakes system. When Adam and Eve sinned (Gen. 4:24) they were driven out of the Garden eastward and forced to live in Ohio. This is why Kwanfan 1212, an Ohioan, likes Michelle Kwan's program "East of Eden so much.

Chicago Stockyards -- Cain and Abel.

Chicago owes its historical prominence to its unique position as America's butcher. Before the advent of refrigerated railroad cars, cattle and other livestock were herded from Texas and other Western states to the railheads in Kansas, put on trains and shipped to Chicago to be slaughtered. The meat was then shipped to the cities of the East for next day consumption.

Throughout history, starting with Cain and Abel, there has been conflict between the farmers and the cattlemen over land use policies. Cain was a farmer and Abel was a herder. God rejected the offering of fruit and grain from the farmer and accepted the animal sacrifice of Cain. (Gen.4:1-4. The Hebrew people were herdsmen, so it is not surprising that their God should like herdsmen better than farmers. The wicked god Baal, on the other hand, was a god of farming -- you prayed to Baal for a bountiful harvest.)

When Joseph invited his father Jacob to come to Egypt he told him, whatever you do, make sure you tell the Pharaoh that you are a herder of animals. That Pharaoh was part of the Hyksos dynasty -- a tribe of herdsmen that had conquered Egypt. Later came a Pharaoh who "knew not Joseph." (the new dynasty had agricultural roots), so quite naturally the Children of Israel were made slaves.
