(Video)Caroline Zhang's new SP(Spanish Gypsy)

First of all, I love Caroline's one spiral position (absolutely gorgeous)

But the rest of the program, meh...I didn't care for the music so much...I guess I was hoping to see a more dramatic Caroline... But I agree, I didn't really feel like she understood/got the music.

I was really hoping Caroline would work on her extension this year. She is so good at expression and drama, I just wish she had better posture and stretch. I know she is ultra-flexible, but I am talking about pointed toes and floating weightlessness. I think she would give so much more polish to her programs this way.

This sounds like nitpicking, but I am actually really bothered by her spiral. Her leg is not behind her but is to her side. IHer extended leg is also bent. It looks so awkward because everything else about her spiral is gorgeous.

Caroline reminds me a bit of Oksana Baiul (before she turned pro). She has a bit of the Z-shaped body posture and delicacy. This video makes me want to pretend Caroline is made of clay and just adjust her a little bit.

I was really glad to see her 3-3.

Wow, she is so impressive. I can't wait to see her do this performance live in Reading at SA!

With Sasha not competing these days, I think Caroline is winning in terms of posture and positions - that spiral sequence was stunning and the real highlight of the program for me. She still has to work on her jumps and overall speed, but it's definitely appreciated to see her going for a 3-3 for the first time! She got close, and at least didn't completely fall. And re. flutzing, it's not like the judges are picky enough about that anyway.

I also thought that her spiral sequence was stunning and the real highlight. I also have to add that her spins are a highlight for me. She is extremely lucky to have naturally soft joints to do those neat flexible moves.

BTW, does anyone know if she does other things such as gymnastics, ballet, or other? I'm wondering where she got that flexibility from?

I disagree. I thought she has wonderful posture and stretch. In my mind she looks polished in terms of the pointed toes and extensions. I think what she needs more of is speed overall, but especially in her footwork sequence. She also does a glaringly obvious flutz. Actually she wavers back and forth between outside edge, inside edge...but eventually it's an inside edge takeoff. Nevertheless, she has so many good qualities about her skating over current senior skaters. I'm sure she will do well and she has a bright future ahead. She is a treat to watch.

wow. i never really appreciated mao's skating before, but i think she improved, and she's starting to grow on me. i think that she's ready for the season, and te only reason she did not do a 3-3 or a combo is that she did not want to risk any injury.

her step sequence was gourgeous.

Injuries are not the problem, she do 3-3 in practice

See watching this I would take Mao and Yu-na over Caroline in a heart beat.

Hello, new member here.

The more I watch it, the more I like it. The jumps bug me just as much as anyone else, but I can overlook that. Low height on jumps (Kristi Yamaguchi, Tara Lipinski) and wonky technique (Tara Lipinski, Sarah Hughes) don't prevent skaters from becoming Olympic champions. Only Caroline's jump entrances are flawed; she rotates and lands satisfactorily.

I'm still convinced her spins and spirals are the best in the world right now. Her last spiral pose before she enters the final spin is a real OMG moment. I wouldn't nitpick her first spiral position; all skaters, at least in my opinion, have their free legs a little off to the side when in that position. Very rarely is the free leg in perfect alignment with the skating leg. I just noticed this in Mirai's LP performance at the same competition.

Very gutsy of her to go for the 3-3 in her first senior SP. It's a pity the combo wasn't completely clean; the one they showed at the start of the clip was beautiful. Unlike those who see zilch presentation in Caroline, I saw an improved and more mature expression this time around. Another thing that strikes me about Caroline is her demeanour; she looks very determined, focused and spunky. She seems to be all business when she's out there.

Caroline is so special. If she improves exponentially with the years, can you imagine her at 16, 20, 25? WOW.

btw, mskaer. How did you get that from icenetwork? They are pretty tough to copy.

Joe

I didn't, but some other folks managed to capture it and it appears to me that people who saw it on Japanese TV are posting on youtube for us

Apparently both Caroline's and Rachael's 3-3's were downgraded....I really wish there was a public portocol. Does anyone know if Caroline received all level 4s for her spins? What about her spiral sequence. I'm interested in knowing her GOEs. Also, I wonder if she was able to up the level of her foot work sequence...it was only level 2 last year. BTW, I LOVED her spiral!!! It is amazing...I bet Peggy and Uncle Dick will ooze over it when they see it at SA.
Go Caroline!

Caroline's bielmann spiral was GORGEOUS! Please keep your pearl spin and spirals for a long time, Carol.:)

I enjoyed re-watching Caroline skate with the right perspective ratio. Somehow it also made me realize that her posture is improved from last year. Her back is straighter, and more upright, giving her a stronger, more mature look. I don't want to compare her to any other skater, but in her SP, she reminds me by turns of Michelle and Sasha. Just wonderful! :)

Beautiful! I may have a new little favorite. She is spectacular already and seems to have so much potential. I just hope she continues to improve in the jump technique department.

I totally agree with you. She's a tough little cookie underneath that physical delicateness. She never loses her nerves or gives up after a major fall in competition. Of course it's best to never fall, but the second best is to be able to pick yourself up after a fall.

Her coach remarked that technically she and Chen Lu progressed similarly for their ages, but that Caroline is tougher mentally.

I'm not surprised. If there's any skater who looks emotionally fragile out there, it's Chen Lu. I thought she was about to pass out after her free program skate at the 1998 Olympics. On the other hand, look at Caroline. She looks so matter-of-fact after she's done with a program. She actually looks pissed sometimes. Perhaps that's why some people seem to think she's stuck up. I think she sets high standards for herself, and is disappointed when she doesn't meet them. The only time where she looked happy after a performance was after her exhibition skate at the 2007 US Nationals.

She actually looked really happy after her JGP Taipei LP last year. She mouthed "Yes!" just after she stopped. It was cute. :)
