This reminds me of what slutskayafan told me about Lillehammer and Yuka Sato. Apparently by the last stage of the competition, the judges already have their biases and act on them. I think it's just a very idiotic way to judge competitions. So what if Irina was ahead in the SP and the FS 1... If she screwed up the second free skate, the marks should have reflected it. These judges are screwed up. And this isn't over either. I bet you that we will see this type of judging again!

Back on topic... I wasn't broken-hearted by Sasha's Olympic performance because I thought she was so gutsy to pick herself up and skate so powerfully after the opening mistakes. But her skate at Worlds was very painful.

This is very semantical. As soon as you read this, it is something I have written and is a part of the past. And if you do something without looking at what you have done, how do you not know you are just doing the something over again?
I believe in your point, but to use the issue of IIRC, at GPF, heading into SLC, Irina won gold with 4 triples..... we don't want to repeat that so we use it as "pavement to reach the future" that does not have "that" in it, right??
This is OT and I think it is so "perception of past, present, future" that it is an agreeance with different terminology.
Some might feel the saddest day in FS is when SeaniBu joined GS
And to TRY to get back on topic, seeing Brian J crying after his Matrix programme (what the name of it was really I don't know) that really got to me. Oh and Oda, eesh, that was hard to see.

1. Tai and Randy's withdrawal from the 1980 Olympics.
2. Sergei's death and the tribute show.
3. Joanna Glick skating in tribute to her brother, Jeremy Glick, a passenger on Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, at Madison Square Garden in October, 2001 during the show "A Skating Tribute: The Legacy of the 1961 U.S. World Team".
4. Michelle's loss at the 2002 Olympics.
5. Michelle's withdrawal from the 2006 Olympics.
1. Tai and Randy's withdrawal from the 1980 Olympics.
2. Sergei's death and the tribute show.

I'm a trouble maker, what can I say? teehee...
Looking back on this incident, as Johnny has done himself, it was a more a future-defining moment than a heart-breaking one I think.
As he has said, 2003 was 'all wrong' for him - in a wrong crowd, had a wrong attitude and so on. He re-assessed his life, made major changes and had a stunning follow-up year. It was probably one of the best things that could have happened to him

Sad tears:
Sergei's death. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news, and exactly how it felt. Bawled like a 5-year-old.
Tai and Randy having to withdraw at Lake Placid - the look on Tai's face just broke my heart.
Marie-France and Patrice having to withdraw at Torino. During the practice for the free skate, Patrice skated up to the Olympic rings on the ice and touched them. Later, he told an interviewer that he did this because they'd planned it, and then he dissolved into tears. And so did I.
Happy tears:
Paul Wylie in Albertville. I watched his televised eligible career in its entirety and could never sit through one of his skates. It was almost as if I were to stay on my feet for his whole program, so could Paul. I'm sure that many of you remember that this wasn't the case! But he totally vindicated himself at Albertville, and while I can't begrude Viktor Petrenko his medal, I sure wish Paul had won it. In an interview before the medal ceremony, someone asked him if he felt he should have won. He just grinned to his ears and said, "I get to see my flag go up!" Best sportsmanship moment ever.
Rudy Galindo winning his National championship, at home in San Jose. I still cry every time I see that program. I don't think I've ever felt as proud of someone I didn't know personally.
Shen & Zhao's "Turandot" in 2003. I don't just cry every time I see this program. There's a moment in the music where I get misty if I hear it on the radio, just remembering their win.
Shen & Zhao's "Impossible Dream" skate in Torino. Those tears were happy and sad at the same time. Hongbo coming back from the injury that would have ended the career of almost anyone else - and still not getting the gold they have so richly deserved for so long. That emotion seemed so well reflected in the music choice that this program never fails to choke me up.
In how many other sports can we judge our athlete's successes by how many times they make us cry?

2. Seeing Shizuka Arakawa's Titanic program for the first time. It was also the first time I saw her skate and I just knew she was going to win Olympic Gold or Silver.
3. Nicole Bobek winning a major title. All that hard work paid off.
4. Sasha Cohen's Romeo & Juliet number. It's a very moving piece of music and skating.
5. Any off ice interview with Irina Slutskaya when she's happy.
6. Kulik winning Gold!
8. Lu Chin's Bronze! She was bawling tears of joy as well.

The most disgusting part of that competition was that it came on the heels of the Skate America which was "controversially" won by Kwan over S. Hughes. That competition was much closer, yet everyone who disagreed with the results acted as if Kwan winning was 9/11 all over again. There were ISU officials bitching to the press that Kwan winning that competition "set the sport back a decade". Kwan alone was personally blamed and attacked for the results. The media was so viciously hateful to her in the post-comp press conference that they literally drove her to tears. The judges themselves were let off scot-free.
(Of course, I think we all know that people were really angry about Kwan leaving Carroll and wanted her punished, period.)
The only reason everybody who bitched and gritched about Skate America were totally silent on the GPF results was that Kwan lost. That's the only thing that matters to anti-Kwannies, no matter how unfair.
