When will Johnny be in Stars on Ice?

I also think its a mistake not to ask Johnny Weir. If he made other commitments thinking he was not going to get asked its understandable though. I also loved Johnny Weir at the Olympics, and due to his skating, and series, he is getting more fans all the time. Someone who places 6th whether or not we think he should have been higher, is certainly showing how popular he is with guest appearances on American talk shows etc. Iam certainly hooked on " Be good Johnny Weir" partly because my love of skating but also he is quite an intriguing personality.
 
I have seen so far the Be good Johnny episode 1 and I cracked up, he is funny but most important is the how much in good terms he is with himself!

I watched one episode and it was more than enough. I turned it off. I don't get the need for my generation to 'shock and awe' with everything they do. He's just crying out for attention (and the way he talked to and about Hill was a huge turn off.)

I can understand wanting to appeal to the biggest mass possible... Johnny runs people hot or cold - while I wanted him to have a season he could be happy/proud with, he's certainly not who I'd pay SOI prices to see.
 
From my view, I watched it as I would watch an episode of Friends or a show on Mtv. I didnt expect to it be Tarkovsky on ice or have any hidden high meaning. It was fast, it was fun and I enjoyed it because I like watching the backstage of figure skating also. Personally it didnt shock and awe me but I m old enough not to be influenced:)
Plus of course I love Johnny as a skater, maybe it was just that.

That is a good answer. I like Johnny enough as a skater but am not impressed with what seems to be a "manufactured" personality.
I am also too old to enjoy MTV so maybe that explains alot :laugh:
 
I'll have to say this. I've known a number of gay people and to me they are the most sensitive and caring people. Always wanting to help out. I was uncomfortable with it years ago as I just couldn't understand why they would choose being gay. Well, you can usually tell that they were born with wrong hormones which is really sad. Life is hard enough without that. So, I have a huge empathy for them.

I don't think there's anything sad about being gay, Grgranny. It's just as normal / usual/ natural as being straight. Besides, aren't 'sad' and 'gay' antonyms?

I think what should be mentioned is that many people don't care about a skater's orientation. I happen to like Johnny's skating but not always his "in your face deal with it" personna.

That is not why I am a skating fan. In the past I strongly disliked things about Johnny but I can say this year at the Olympics he was one of my favorites. It has nothing to do with straight/vs gay - only to do with the fact that I really liked his skating and his sportsmanship.

I don't like booing at the Olympics but it seemed to me that Johnny wuzrobbed. I thought his reaction to the booing - the hands down gesture showed me a side of Johnny I had not seen before.

I thought he was fine in the K&C and even liked that he wore the rose crown a fan gave him.
I think too often Johnny has acted a little jerky - but for me it never had anything to do with his orientation. It had to do with jerky is jerky and a putz is a putz.

Sometimes I think his fans confuse objections to his behavior and too easily dismiss it as being anti -whatever,,,,

I know only one gay figure skater, Rudy Galindo, whom I happen to like.

I was talking in general.

Johnny is one of the most well-known skaters in the World, not just the US. Not having him on the tour is just bad business. I personally think they should get rid of tired old blood (Todd, Mike Weiss, etc) and bring back people with actual talent who interest the audiences. They'd make a killing having Virtue and Moir, Jeff Buttle and Joannie Rochette. There aren't that many dates, surely they could figure out a way to swing up to Canada afterwards, or even during the middle of the run.

I have to say that Johnny really is not that shocking with most of what he says and does. He made a few more comments four years ago that could be taken the wrong way and were likely in poor taste. He has matured a lot since then and there is absolutely a homophobic-air about IMG.

There have been numerous gay skaters on SOI over the years, but most of them NEVER talk about it and present a "straight" image at all times, have "girlfriends" or get married to women in pink hotels.

The entire tour used to be quite sexual when Bezic choreographed it, which makes me not buy any "family-friendly" argument. So what if Johnny did Lady Gaga, hell...Tara Lipinski vamped for a bunch of middle-aged men one year when she was seventeen.

I have an issue with "gay" not being "family-friendly," as though gay people are offending families left and right. Most families likely have someone openly gay in their extended family by this point. It shouldn't even be an issue. If SOI wants to continue being stale and project the overwhelming performance charisma of "masculine" men like Evan and Todd, they deserve to risk going out of business.

Figure skating, especially professional figure skating, is all about artistry and having a voice. Projecting a tame image (the Todd image) seems very Ice Capades. Just bring out the clowns...oh wait, that was an SOI Group Number.

This tour has been in a bad way for a while, but the last few seasons have been semi-promising with Cohen and Buttle. Now they have Davis and White joining.

Czisny is a pretty skater, but she seems to rest of being pretty. I don't feel anything when she skates.

At the risk of being a massive target from all of you, I'll say that it's good to bring new blood into SOI and say good-bye to Michael Weiss and Todd Eldridge. Virtue/Moir, and Jeffrey Buttle are good choices, but Lady Gaga is not. It's not about gay or not gay at all. It's the style of the skating that is not family oriented. Who cares who is gay? As long as you keep the private matters private, nothing would matter. I liked Johnny Weir's skating a lot before, but not much any more. And really sick of his costumes. Another thing is that you can never go with what the kids like without parental consent, can you?

I actually have a lot of sympathy for that viewpoint, but a few years ago from all reports, SOI was turning into Cable Porn on Ice! and another commenter linked to a picture of Cohen that makes Weir seem wholesome.
