Who will Retire after the Olympics?

Who will retire after the Olympics?

I heard D/L mention that they were doing so well this year, that they may just stay on. They have been getting good results and are in line to move up a couple of spots (maybe 4th or 5th?), so I don't know that they will retire after the Olys and Worlds.

When did Kristin marry Vakhtang? And are there any pictures? Zanzibar...

I've been trying to track down "the latest info" on that, but haven't had any luck. I do know they got engaged at the Dortmund Worlds, but can't find anything on a wedding date. As I said in my original post here, it was a "far as I know" situation; they might still be engaged and might wait till after Torino to actually have the wedding.

Who's retirering?

Ladies: Michelle, Sacha (if she doesn't medal at the Olympics and/or doesn't win Gold at Worlds, she might hang on for another season or two, but I don't see her competing until Vancouver 2010), Shizuka, Fumie, Irina (is she loses the OGM, she might stick around for Worlds and then retire, but I feel pretty certain this is her last season), Elena Skolova, etc.

Mens: Most of the top contenders are in their early 20's, so I can imagine most of them will stick around for 2010. I must say I have a feeling that if Lambiel wins in Torino, he will retire 'cause he's already won the GP Final and Worlds 2005, if not, he'll stick around for 2010. The Canadian guys will stick around because the next games are in Vancouver. Michael Weiss & Tim Goeble will very probably leave after Torino & Worlds (Calgary)

Pairs: The top russian pairs will leave after this season, as is Shen & Zhao

Ice Dance: N&K, G&G, D&L and the Israelis are on their last season. Belbin and Agosto will go on until 2010

No comment about Sasha and Michelle until after US Nationals, Torino and Calgary. Their future plans depend heavily on their results from these competitions.

Shizuka will likely retire, but I'm not so sure about Fumie. Like Kwan, she will not want her career to end because of an untimely injury.

I am not sure what you are thinking would keep Kwan around. If she does not win the Olympics, what would be her motivation to continue, to try a 4th time for the elusive Oly gold at 29 in 4 years time vs somebody like Asada? Or if she won the Olympics somehow, it would be a major relief for her and she will be all to happy to finally move on. I will be shocked if Kwan stays after this year.

There may be a retirement announcement before the Olympics. Are you happy?

I think Michelle might compete in 2007 just because she likes to skate, without necessarily having any ulterior motives in mind or further mountains that she wants to conquer.

MM :)

Well, she MIGHT have planned to compete in 07 but she got a major injury this year. Maybe after this year she'll figure it's not worth it any more. But that's just my prediction- it can go either way.

Meanwhile I just don't see Slutskaya, Cohen, or Arakawa continuing past Torino (or 06 Worlds)...

I can certainly see Cohen sticking it out another year to win Nationals (piece of cake) and take a shot at Worlds (who knows what could happen. At this point it'll probably be Asada vs. Cohen, though.)
After a National and Worlds gold, she's done.

I don't have any way of knowing who is planning on retiring, but I hope Cohen does. The thought of another 4 years of her makes me sick to my stomach. She's past he prime, anyway.

Don't worry, I think you'll get your wish. What good is it for her to stay in this? From some of her quotes she is unsure what to do after the Olys. This sounds like a hint at retirement to me. And if she wins Oly Gold or Silver, you'll bet she'll be gone with the wind, too.

Nothing against Asada, who certainly displays the potential for an amazing career. However, we haven't seen how her body will grow and change or, god forbid, if she might sustain a serious injury (think Naomi Nari Nam). So it's not Mao; I would be hesitant to pronounce any skater beginning her "reign" before she had reached her full height and weight.

As for Cohen, I think it depends on how deep her competitiveness and drive goes. She's always said she's always been a very competitive person; however, it remains to be seen if these last four years have mitigated those feelings. If she really is as driven as she says, we may see Cohen as another Michael Weiss.

Personally, I'd prefer to see Cohen channel that drive into SOI. COI---nothing against it--is easy. Just go out and do your exhibition number. However, SOI is very demanding of its skaters. Both S&P and B&S have said they were not prepared for how much work skating with SOI would demand, and that in many ways it was tougher than competitive skating.

This is JMO, but I think Sasha would grow more, be challenged more, and be happier as a skater with SOI. But I do agree that she's going to want an Olympic medal of any color and at least a USN gold. I think Asada is terrific and shows great potential, as I said, but we've only seen her in two GPS competitions. After people saw Carolina Kostner in a similar number of GPS events plus Euros, most said she was going to be the new queen of the ice.

So by no means do I think Asada has the '06, '07, or any World championships in the bag. Again, I have no doubt of her talent and skills, just the recognition that all may not go smoothly in her physical transition from barely pubescent to a fully-hormoned young woman (think Ando last season) and how that affects her skating. Plus there's Asada's lack of experience on the senior level. I think the judges will be less forgiving of her technical and presentational weaknesses next season, as they tend to be with any young skater who comes flying out onto the ice. Remember what happened to Michelle after she won her first World Championship? Granted, Kwan had Tara to contend with as well as boot problems, but these are exactly the kinds of things, though not the same, that could make Asada's second senior season difficult.

Also, the experience of Cohen, Ando, and others may help them next season. Plus there are other skaters such as Czisny, although she's not as well-rounded as Asada, who could challenge her.

Or else everything could go very well for Asada and she could mow down everybody, starting another Kwan-like reign.:) If that happens, especially considering Sasha's back problem, I think she will look for a satisfying professional career. Not only do I think SOI would be good for Sasha, but I also thing Sasha would be good for SOI. They've been without a "dazzling" leading ladies singles skater since Kristi retired and goodness knows they could use one. With Sasha's "wow" moves for a show audience and the excellent choreographers employed by SOI, I think SOI would pay her very well to join, whether she has an Olympic medal or not--thought of course they'd want her with.

I think Michelle will remain committed to COI. Such a shame that, IMO, Irina's health will prevent her from even doing one year as a guest with SOI. She is an amazing show skater. However, I think that after a stint as star of COI after the Os, she'll put her energy and health into trying to have a child.

All this is JMO, of course.

Rgirl

Rgirl, I couldn't agree more about Sasha. I think she and SOI are a perfect fit!
And I don't see Michelle staying on past this season. If there were any lingering doubt in her mind, I feel certain this injury has washed it away. I could see Michelle staying with COI, plus doing some specials. Most of all though, I think she wants to get on with her life. She has devoted everything to skating for such a long time now ... I think it's now time for her.

As Rgirl says for Sasha, it depends on how much she is driven to continue eligible skating.

I would say that about every skater competing in the Olympics. Some skaters are quite happy to be an Olympian. They ususally have the one Olympics and when it's over they either try to get into Disney on Ice or guest star in their country's annual ice show. Some may get a job coaching. And there is always schooling. There is much to think about at the end of an eligible career. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Some skaters who have been in more than one Olympics, must come to realize just how motivated they are for trying another 4 years. Others will do the post Oly Worlds and retire. Still others will continue with Worlds, and dropping out before the next Olympics at some point because the motivaton becomes less as the years go on.

I think the speculations from all the posters are very probable. However, the final decision to retire lies with the individual skater, and it goes beyond the top 10. The next 20 also have to decide.

Getting over the dream ain't easy.

Joe

Just to add one thing about Sasha ... this Nationals will be, IMO, her best shot at gold. With Michelle less than 100%, plus the fact she has not competed much under COP, this will give Sasha an enormous opportunity. It is really up to her now to step up to the plate and make the most of it. Things will only get more difficult technically from here on in ... and my personal feeling is that neither Michelle or Sasha can advance much further in that aspect of their skating.

For Sasha, it's time to get it done.

I did not say I wanted her to retire, I just said I would be shocked if she stayed after this year. It would be hard for a woman with 5 World titles, 2 Olympic medals already, to be motivated by much except the Oly gold and I doubt she really believes she has a hope to win it as a 29-year with somebody like Mao on the scene, with the current judging system. Plus she has been on the scene since she was about 15, she and Irina have been on the scene 12 years, but Kwan has faced the upmost pressures and stresses almost atleast 10 of those years, even Slutskaya has only 5 or 6 of those.

That being said I fully except her to do Olympics and Worlds.

Red Dog, I think it goes way beyond "everyone thinking so" ... it was pretty clear at Marshalls that she is nowhere near what she should be.
This is a huge chance for Sasha, she needs to close the deal. She will never have another opportunity like this one.

I agree with that. But I, for one, won't be absolutely shocked if she surprises everyone at Nats.

I also agree with this- her chances are higher than EVER IIRC. When was there a Nationals in the past that Kwan and Cohen participated in where Kwan was clearly not at the top of her game? (Forget last year- I mean physically here.)

This could be the toughest Nats for Kwan yet (regardless of the shape she's in). In years past, she's had it SO easy. Not so this time. (Or, maybe Cohen will MAKE it easy for her  :p )

This thread has changed from retirement to prediction. oh well.

It would be difficult for me to believe Sasha would lose the Nationals. I think she is the most qualified and injury free skater at this point in time. The USFSA is buttering her up in many ways for the Olympics. The USA, imo, does not have a possible Oly medal winner from the bevy of beauties in the stable except for Sasha.

Sasha is America's Great Red, White and Blue Hope to continue the US dominance in Ladies figure skating.

Back to retirement. I could speculate on her but I would rather hear it from her first.

Joe

Red Dog, I thought there were some missed opportunities in 2004/2005, when Michelle had not moved forward much technically. At 2004 Nats, Sasha was ahead after the SP, but again, couldn't get through the long without a few mistakes. And then, MK just blew the Tosca roof right off the house!!!

And ITA RD ... I would NEVER count Michelle out completely. She could surprise everyone. I never can judge whether these kinds of thoughts are my just wanting it so much, or if they really have some merit to them. So I appreciate when I hear it from someone like you, who has no horse in this race. ;)
