Will Someone Please Slap Peter Carruthers???

I'm not sure that the interviewers are told to "push buttons" -- Suzie Wynn does interviews, and she isn't nearly so obnoxious as Peter is.

Maybe Susie Wynne is more comfortable hearing a producer scream in her ear and can stay focused. Maybe she's just a better interviewer. Maybe they're told to be good cop/bad cop.

Emily

I think she handeled him quite well. The attitude was great and she blew him off as if to say whats your problem. Good for her.

The Big Question is 'do we need these interviews?' I'd rather use the time to see another skater.

Joe

I honestly don't think its envy. I'm sure Lipinski et al wish they had job like his and he knows it. I think Carruthers is just trying to breathe life in these interviews and hey somebody has to get in the face of these kids who everybody else walks on egg shells around.

Yes, instead of boring interviews, I'd give anything to have the camera more on the "Meissner glare" or just body language in general. Or have it more interactive where the audience at home who could text message. That would be a heck of a lot more interesting.

Wow...I watch US coverage of skating events whenever I can (I don't have cable at University), but I watch Canadian coverage the most because I only get CTV and CBC. I don't recall ANY comentators on CTV or CBC acting as ridiculously as Peter Carruthers (or however you spell his name). Please correct me fellow Canadians if I'm wrong. To ask those questions when people are feeling down on their performance (or happy) is just ridiculous. Have a heart...

One thing that could provide Peter some protection, at least he isn't bringing up anyones dead fathers just prior to a skate, i.e. Japan's interview of Miki. Now you want to talk about a real twerp!

I really would love for a skater to respond with a "you couldn't come up with a better question? Talk about perpetuating a stereo type that interviewers are negative all the time."

Much like Sasha did to Peter but more "in their face."

I am rather surprised not to hear something like that from Johnny.?? Want to have that aggressive image Johnny?

Oh, how about it?! The skaters should just throw their skates at him and storm off!!! Skating needs some "Springer" action! The ratings would soar.
:-)

It's the tone in which his questions and comments are delivered. Sarcastic, looking down his nose, etc, when there is really no reason for that. Andrea Joyce and Tracy Wilson both conduct good interviews. I agree that the tough questions can and should be asked but you don't need to inflect attitude into it. It's getting to be a problem across the board in journalism. You can't hardly watch the news without getting the opinion or attitude of the anchor. Same with skating, I guess. He sounds like a catty little snot.

For those who didn't see Sasha tell Peter her desire to change the focus
http://www.filefactory.com/file/cb2a38/

However this is rather odd to me that Sasha would say anything, she states in her "personality bio," that she does not like complements. I can see the difference...just surprising. Seems like that would be what she would want to talk about.

I do think if someone does want some "media attention" there is a good opportunity there.

As much as I think Emily (got the right name again, wha hoooo!) handled / presented / fielded the question quite decorously (thanks again JVC), it still doesn't do anything to preempt a change. Are the skaters so much in anticipation of some "dirt scooping" question that they just write it off?

If so, I would say it is up to us viewers to "express" our desires for more positive questions. I am going to write ESPN.

Good point, Maybe they could just say, could you restate your question please. If it stays "snotty" then it is time to whip off the skates. ????

Perhaps a skater or two looking at him incredulously and stating, "Peter, I can't BELIEVE you just asked me that question!" might give him a clue that he's being an oaf in his interviews.
TPTB should find someone else to waylay the skaters outside the K&C and let Peter stick to something he does well (IMHO): pairs commentary.

It's a Dvix, but I think you have that. Hunh, I don't know?

I just tried the FF file and the 3rd play I got the video with the sound, but the 5th play everything was in sync. Not sure what happened, I am encoding a 2 hour vid so I would assume that has something to do with it but not sure.

If anyone ever wants a vid or something from me feel free to email me and I can send it directly.
As you wish!

Everytime Peter asks something along the lines of "You were going along great and then some probems with the triple toe. What happened?"
I've always wanted the skater to say point blank. "I fell" and leave it at that. I bet Peter wouldn't know what to say next.

I don't know why this didn't come to my mind earlier.

Does anyone else notice how he uses that little "kid voice" (like when some people talk to 3 yearolds) when talking to skaters that don't speak much english. I hate that!

"Googgoo Zhang, do you goo goo gaagaa Like goo goo fly high up in air."

He was doing that with Mia too and I really wanted her to say "I'm not little kid Peter." - "iie kodomo Peter."

It seems so condescending, not the words but the tone of voice. EEEEgad that bugs me.
