Wrapping Your Legs While Rotating

The photos of Erin Pearl's "wrapping" were enough to make me stay, "Ugh!" What kind of skating coach did Erin have, anyway, to not correct this obvious incorrect jumping technique???

Hate to say it, but perhaps Erin's lack of technique was one of the reasons we no longer see her on the skating scene.

I wonder....

This is a great thread. First, I'd like to know who started calling this a 'leg wrap' when in actuality it is a bent free leg. Although I will say that in the air it does look like the free leg is wrapped around the landing leg.

I'll never forget when during Erin Pearl's free skate Dick Button in describing the leg wrap said 'It's ugly'!!!

The worst offender right now is Yukari Nakano. Her free leg looks like it's bent at a 90 degree angle. It makes me wonder how she gets her free leg out in time when she lands her jumps.

Silvia Fontana had a leg wrap on her triple lutz. However, she did not do this on her triple toe. In fact, I think it was Peter Carruthers at the 2001 Goodwill Games who pointed out that Silvia did not have her feet close together on the lutz, but had them close together on the toe.

I never noticed Oksana Kazakova's leg wrap, but now that it has been mentioned I can picture it on her double axel. I'll have to dig out my tapes to watch it.

This is a really interesting topic, I discussed it with a few of my friends in the skating world, and we all agreed that when you are younger, coaches tend to teach you to wrap your legs because it's easier to get around. As you mature as a skater, wrapping is generally frowned upon because it isn't as attractive to watch. It's not technically the "wrong" way to do it, it's just aesthetically less pleasing.

In my opinion, the judges would be perfectly justified in deducting
.1 or .2 from the presentation mark for a performance that included two or more jumps with "wrapped" legs. This is poor jumping technique, and it looks really terrible, plain and simple.

Just my two cents.....

I have to admit that "wrapping" is one of my pet peeves. It's very distacting and unattractive. Personally, I have a harder time with this than I do with flutzes and I don't like those either.

I concur with you that wrapping the leg while rotating is poor technique, it is unattractive, and it is very distracting. Frankly, when a skater "wraps" during his/her performance, that's the one thing that I remember the most about the performance.

As I wrote previously, I think the judges would be entirely justified in taking a mandatory .1 or .2 deduction in the presentation mark if a skater "wrapped" his/her jumps. Maybe that would send out a clear message - "Learn correct technique".

Just my two cents, of course.

No respectable coach would teach a student to wrap. It is improper technique. Judges deduct for bad technique and a wrap will get a skater a deduction--at least from the 3 national (US) and 1 international judges I have talked to.

It doesn't make sense to me either to let them learn a jump incorrectly because once they learn it that way, it's going to be extremely difficult for them to learn to do it correctly.

I agree....when you learn bad habits as a youngster, and those bad habits are not corrected, they become very difficult to break.

No really respectable figure skating coach would permit his/her students to wrap their free leg while rotating. It is TERRIBLE technique, and it looks TERRIBLE. Ugh.

Again, I would recommend deducting .1 or .2 from the presentation mark for this habit.

Just wondering....does "wrapping" effect the rotation in any way?
Does the skater need to compensate for the wrapping by putting more energy into the rotation? Does wrapping cause problems in the landing of the jump? Can injuries result from this practice?

Denise Bielmann had a pretty awful wrap back in the day too.

Oksana Kazakova, Midori.....yes, Erin Pearl too....I think Derrick Delmore wraps as well, but I can't remember.

Yes, Midori Ito was a classic "wrapper" with her jumps. I didn't remember that Denise Biellman wrapped her jumps until I viewed some of my old videotapes. Lo and behold, she wrapped! Still, Denise was a great jumper - terrific, high, powerful jumps.
