Yulia Lipnitskaya

Not necessarily. It only means she has not officially told the federation she definitely will not skate next year.

For me it means that as a member of Russian national team she has a spot/right to participate/present herself for the team try outs in September in Sochi.

TASS reported that Adelina Sotnikova and Julia Lipnitskaya are included in the candidates for the national team for the next season, which has been decided by the executive committee of the federation of figure skating in Russia.

"The executive committee of the federation summed up the season today, which was found to be satisfactory, and it discussed the competition calendar for the next season, and approved the preliminary plans. Also, the executive committee approved the list of candidates today for the national team for the next Olympic season. Olympic champions Julia Lipnitskaya and Adelina Sotnikova are in it and they will all appear at the Russian Test Skates in Sochi."

will this affect her in grand prix series? I mean if she's doing well will she get a gp spot too or not?

I think all it means is that she didn't notify the federation that she is quitting. Russians have tests skates in September, so she will be monitored and may or may not get the GP spot. But currently she is one of the candidates, together with other 8-10 ladies.

Sorry I'm new to Russian skating, but I want to ask what is this test skates? Is this test will decide who will go to Olympic/GP? Don't they have national competition for that?

Russian Nationals can determine who is going to Olympics but it doesn't work with GP series as it takes place before Nationals.

Test skates - for juniors there are usually closed test skates in August (closed means no public allowed) and seniors have open test skates in September (open means that public is allowed, so we will possibly have some clips if someone records it). based on that the test skates the federation decides who from juniors will get JGP event, and who is well prepared from seniors (to decide who can be sent to various B competitions, or the host spots for Russian GP). The test skates are for monitoring how the skaters are prepared for the season, giving feedback regarding the program (there were occassions when a team had to change a program becuase the federation did not like it) and feedback regarding the elements, to make sure that the skaters get the maximum levels they are capable on spins and step sequence.

No one is saying that based on the test skates someone will be chosen for the Olympics. Last time the federation made decision only after Europeans, and took into account the whole season, including the results from GP, GPF, Russian nationals and Europeans. The article that Lipnitskaya is a candidate for the team means that she didn't notify them that she is quitting, which means she is one of the skaters who will be fighting for the spot. It doesn't mean that she is the one who is selected.

What do y'all think the chances are that Yulia has been training and practicing her routines (after a vacation and recovery) and is keeping it quiet? Adeline Sotnikova's old coach said that if she had known better, she should have given Adeline a year off after the olympics http://fs-gossips.com/elena-buyanova-in-sport-everything-is-fleeting/ . Do you think its possible that Yulia is taking a long vacation like that? Do you think she will reuse her old routines, assuming she is coming back? And do you think she will come back?

I really hope so!!! My advice would be keep that amazing SP and let Lambiel give her a new FS and focus on doing the most clean FS she can. In my opinion she is something special and my interest in the sport is going downhill because she really seems to capture the "skate with your heart" aspect that I don't find in many others. I think without Gubanova I'd just have tuned out a lot more. No disrespect to anyone else because I'm a fan of many other skaters but the soul of my reemergence as a fan of elite figure skating was 100% due to Julia. 100%

It would be wise for her to reuse her programs from last year, they were barely used in international competition and it would give her additional time to work on her elements since she knows her programs and it would hopefully help with the mental part.

I hope that if she will stay she will use last season programs
Both are amazing and I'm sad we couldn't see her Kill Bill in full form.

*For team event, each nation is allowed for two substitutions.
(IMO the Russian fed will probably use their substitutions on their mens and ice dances since it's their weakest disciplines, so if Yulia was to compete in the team event she will have to do both short and free)
(the ladies are last for both team and individuals)

Russian Test Skates is on Sept. 9-10 (where all skaters show their programs for the season)

I really hope that Yulia will be preferred to go to the Olympics because of her experience and because of the publicity and love she gives people for ice skating as a sport. And because of her large fanbase. And because she has a lot of fans in South Korea, so the crowd will be more responsive and loving to her than other russians because of the Yuna Kim scandal
