Yulia Lipnitskaya

Even if this is a fan page for our precious Yulia I just want to say #jesuischarlie, as i said I am a french girl, I live in Paris and as you know charlie hebdo has been victim of a terrorist attack. I just want to think about all the journalists who are dead just because they used our freedom of expression. And I don't want to forget the police officers who are dead to defend our rights.... Thank you

I don't think I've ever heard someone suggest that a person move to Los Angeles to get away from media before. :laugh2

Honestly, I think she is much stronger than a lot of people want to give her credit for being. She is just in an adjustment period after never knowing this kind of life before.

Yulia's reactions are those of a strong personality reacting to extreme adversity. There is nothing to suggest that her personality is damaged in any way. She requires serenity, substance and integrity, they subjected her to the vacuous chaos of their tabloid world. Her resistance is a sign of strength. It's not a matter of if she rises above this, but when. They need to do everything they can to put this behind her before next season.

I can't see her adjusting to American values, and we wouldn't recognize her if she did, God forbid. She projects a virtuous disregard for materialism, and is content to work passionately in her own world when allowed to do so. Frank Carroll is just the tip of the iceberg: http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/02/u-s-skating-coach-brushes-off-little-girl-julia-lipnitskaia

Yulia would welcome this, she has said she needs more attention from her coaches.

Alba's reply: She can do that with Eteri. Nobody works with the choreographer all the time in anycase.

Alba, She already has 2 coaches. Why not bring in a third coach, call that person an associate coach or whatever? Yulia and the associate coach for music or whatever her title, they could work together regularly according to need. It's not at all clear what happened last year with the programs, but it must be avoided from now on. According to an interview, with Yulia I think, both Eteri and Yulia benefited from Ilya's musical insight. And in another interview Yulia said she didn't get enough coaching. There is a need that Eteri cannot fully accommodate. But most important, the quality of Yulia's performance is directly proportionate to how deeply she feels the music. Ilya's indifferent selection last year, one of only two choices to date, had grave consequences. Ilya has stated that he does his best work with other skaters. A musically astute coach who works regularly with her, and shares her vision, would be better able to tailor music and performance to her personal requirements. Yulia could concentrate of performing, and be relieved of frenetic searches for music she wants. The choice of music, together with making her a fiction of the press and internet, were the issues that derailed her this year. I am sure they are addressing both thoughtfully and effectively. Resulting changes may be the most interesting news that awaits us. The most important message that I carry away from this season is that our very sensitive butterfly flies on two fragile wings, one serenity, the other intuition. She needs to be understood and protected.

That is well said.

That depends from a lot of things I guess. Eteri and the other guy (Dudakov is his name?) have many students and many are very gifted and at a high level. If she needs a coach all for herself she should work with anothe coach then who has Yulia only, as an elite student. A part from the fact that I don't know who this good coach can be, the problem then is with the finance. I don't think she can have both, a good coach/choreo all for herself and all the facilities.

No offense meant to anyone here, but how do people keep track of this "unfriending" / "unfollowing" business? And why would anyone be monitoring that?

It appears that Yulya unfriended Eteri and Diana in VK. That's weird

Or maybe she just doesn't want her private/social/online life to interfere with her work?
She's 16 years old... we've all unfriended our mom and dad on FB at some point. lol

That's kind of what I was thinking too. I actually unfriended FB about a year ago when I stopped logging in. :)

I doubt she'd want to be tutored or receive special treatment, and she shouldn't part from Eteri. If they can't supplement with a part-time choreographer-coach or replace Dudakov, then things are better left as is. This idea grew out of reflections on the role of Ilya. Of course you're right about it falling flat in the real world. I am so attached to her artistic side that unrealistic reveries are quite common, and watching her suffer is beyond painful.

Normally I don't care about that stuff, but there are all sorts of rumors about Yulya quitting and switching coaches, so who knows, it might be relevant. Might be something random. And you know how obsessive Yulya fans are, somebody is always monitoring her VK page, if something changes, everybody knows it. It's weird it's not in the papers yet

Well maybe she and her mother, and maybe the Fed as well? are concerned that Eteri has too many students at and in the elite level. If she doesn't feel that she is getting coached properly or that people on her team are not giving her the time she needs from them, then she needs to make a change.

That is the essence of her complaint in the interview, part of which I copy below. This perceived neglect, which she apparently saw as continuing into the future, often prompted thoughts of quitting around the time of China. To make things worse, in a later interview Eteri said she would welcome more students. I have no doubt Yulia is aware of this. Eteri did her best under the difficult circumstances, and appeared to put Yulia first throughout the season, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome. Eteri often looked stressed and confused after failed skates. And let's remember that Eteri did nothing to make sure she got to the CofC medal ceremony. Ilya has remarked that Yulia is like a house where you have to repeatedly knock on the door, which translates to me that communication is lacking. So if we put these facts together, I would conclude that she has not gotten the help she needed, and would be concerned about what will happen in the future. Yulia is smart and in touch with herself, she knows what must be corrected before next season. If she doesn't see that happening, I would agree that she needs to make a change. Her mother is fiercely protective, she must be furious about this season. If Yulia were my child, I would tell her to quit now while she is still young and can complete her education, unless she is convinced that she would not go through another R&J. I hadn't thought of a potential role of the fed. If they were to listen to Yulia, they are in the best position to put her back on track. She certainly deserves such consideration.

Q: But tell me, why was it so hard for you? Maybe you were bored, got fed up by training?

A: There are two groups now, four practices plus gym. The coaches have to watch everything very closely. Every athlete needs attention, but it's impossible to pay as much attention as it's desired, to everyone. The juniors in our group got really great start. And the seniors are not that great yet. We have run-throughs every day. Maybe it helps to prepare for competitions, but not everyone can endure that. Sometimes I get fed up and want to quit. But if you can't really do anything besides skating, you can't quit.

I pray that she doesn't really feel that way. This is a toxic mindset.
Imagine, if she really believes her only option in life is skating and that she'd maybe want to quit but feels she can't.
Like she's trapped on a one way road.
She will never be free or happy if this kind of thinking doesn't go or is made to go by her family.
There is not only skating in your life Yulia and you are much more than just one of many Russian skaters. You have your life ahead of you, you can become whatever you want.

I agree. I just hope she can see the beauty in the opportunities she has in front of her.

Part of me fears that she planned on making a run at Sochi and that's all the farther the plan went. Hopefully there is more that she wants but more than anything....I hope she doesn't compete again until she is ready. She has already done enough! Anything else is bonus points and needs to come from the heart.

That's one thing which bothered me in her whole saga of her and her Mum gambling their lives for her to go on with her skating: that's too heavy a burden to bear for one so young. It doesn't leave a choice but try to be successful at it whatever the price for it is.
I hope she does get free of that burden.
